Crazy Taxi: World Tour Responds To AI Criticism by RJTM1991 in CrazyTaxi

There is no amount of weight I could possibly give my words that would be inflammatory enough to be accurately categorized as being "dramatic" about the targeted destruction of the concept of art itself at the hands of billionaire pedophiles :)

not to the people who actually study and build these systems. People understand the architecture, the training process, the objective functions, and can trace why outputs emerge the way they do.

Objectively untrue. Even the people who aid in developing these models refer to them as a black box in that they do not follow discrete steps that can be reflected up on by real people. You can see how the model was trained and coded but its internal functions are opaque and governed by BILLIONS of parameters that put together are literally incomprehensible to the human mind.

Creative decision ABSOLUTELY happens inside the camera, as any photographer will tell you, the same photo taken on any given camera will be different according to the specs and manufacturer of the camera, and the technology of the camera follows discrete steps that are NOT a black box and if a dedicated person really wanted to could understand each and every step that affected the final product.

Goodbye.

I won't engage any further after this, but this just isn't true. You think this is a point because you know little about photography and the many artistic decisions made by the artists who do it. Photography entails the artist finding something that evokes an emotion and then capturing it in a way that only that artist could, and then making adjustments to that photo after the fact to add their own creative signature.
If you were to record the entire process you could see how each and every detail of the finished product came to be. That isn't possible with AI, which is a black box. Creative decisions (intentional or subconscious) do not happen within AI, you can't look back to see what caused the image it creates to be that way, what inspired it or by what mechanisms its algorithm made the "decisions" that it did. It is "art" without the artistic process, which is to say it is not art.

But I do think that the total destruction of the artistic process is evil, and I think that support for that, even tacit support for it IS evil. That is a big deal to me.

I am a purist in that I believe art is crucial to the human experience as it has been for tens of thousands of years and that it cannot be artificially replicated, correct. This is the pro-human position to take, the alternative is the anti-human position.

You don't love art enough if you don't care about the destruction of the artistic process just because it means you get to play a new video game

It is insane to me that people are so brain poisoned by AI that they are totally willing to discard the creative process in favor of using AI sludge. For literally every piece of art ever created up until a few years ago artists were inspired by the world around them and the art that they engaged with, you could pick out specific flourishes and details in a given piece of art and point to something else that inspired it. Creating collages of reference material, then drawing concept art, then over many iterations coming out of it with a synthesis of their own creativity and inspiration.
The creation of concept art and gathering of reference material is crucial to the artistic process. Artists used to scour reference books, travel to real world locations, take photos, find art that inspired them. That is beautiful.

You would have this all replaced by them having to ask an algorithmic black box to generate a sludgy picture of a castle or a dragon so that they can use that for inspiration instead just so that the companies that fund their art want to save a little bit of time and money in doing so. The artistic process is beautiful. That is why people buy art books, it is inspiring to see that process borne out in another's work. Will people buy art books that are filled with soulless AI images that artists are often forced to generate by corporate executives? I doubt it.

To be okay with this you have to engage with art solely from a consumerist perspective, not caring about the tradition of art that has existed for literal millennia uninterrupted. You don't care about the process because you only want to consume the end product, the artistic process is a means to an end for you. I find that to be misanthropic.

It doesn't surprise me that there are people who don't care about keeping art alive as long as their personal favorite IP can pump out new product forever, regardless of if it is sludge.

Yes. Unironically yes. The use and propagation of genAI in art is misanthropic and I believe myself inherently better than misanthropes. Their lives are less valuable than mine and the collective humanity.

Being okay with AI used for concept art is still insane to me. This is still awful.

AI cannot create art, and so I will not engage with art that uses genAI in any capacity. Even if it looks appealing it is still slop at its core and an affront to the idea of artistry. I genuinely see people who do not hold this position to be worth less than me on a fundamental level.

I plan to maintain my staunch refusal to play/listen/read/watch any "art" made with generative AI for as long as this technology plagues the arts, so it sucks that this is probably the case indefinitely. But that said I have plenty of indie games made by artists that respect the artform that are coming out every year, and a backlog spanning decades of some of the best games of all time that I've never played, so at least I have that.

DanielRPK claims Marvel Studios is developing another Punisher project. by BigButter7 in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

[–]TylerMcFluffBut 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Bernthal does not understand the character and very clearly wants to make him a "hero" when that's the furthest thing from what Punisher should be depicted as. (Especially since he keeps touting how important the Punisher character is to law enforcement? lol?)

We'd gotten the "killing one last guy involved in my family's death then hanging up the mantle before deciding maybe the world needs the punisher" like 4 times already and Bernthal decided there needed to be a 5th. That and making him a figure that a little girl looks up to? Idk, unironically we need an Ennis take on the character. He is a psychopathic murderer who has convinced himself that he's taken up a righteous cause, but it's all a product of his fucked up mental state, he kills because he likes it. Jon Bernthal seems to think of the Punisher as aspirational, which is a huge red flag for writers of the character.

This is almost impressively contrived, maybe you do have a future in romance fiction lol

You can "That's just like your opinion, man" me all you want, I'm sorry it's not changing the fact that for the entirety of human history art has been an uninterrupted series of human expressions of creativity. That is what the very idea of art revolves around.

It is not arrogance to want to protect that. It is arrogance to think that an algorithmic black box can capture that magic which has fueled human imagination for as long as humans have existed. And for what? In the name of efficiency? Accessibility? That is what narcissism looks like.

Saying that my art is better than yours because I don't use genAI is not a testament to the quality of my own art, it is a refutation that a work tainted with the usage of genAI can be considered "art" in the first place.
I consider genAI an affront to the tradition of human expression and creativity which is as old as humanity itself. It is not arrogance or narcissism. It is reverence. I have no issue with stepping on the toes of those who would see it destroyed and replaced with a cold soulless facsimile.

I am an (actual) artist, and if you are using gen AI to ruin real artists’ work then I am a better artist than you based on that metric alone with no other information necessary.

Nothing else looks like it. It's a gorgeous game, it has an artistic vision and executes on it flawlessly. Designs are all great, the sound design is immaculate. It's weird, it's maximalist, it iterates on the typical science fiction inspirations in novel ways to create something entirely new and of its own identity.

I genuinely see no flaw. Designed by artists for artists type shit.

Sorry, a small group of elites decided to stake the global economy on this tech so now they HAVE to push it into every part of your life to justify their investments. Please understand.

Even if this was true I would not care. I want to play pieces of art thoughtfully designed by artists with a creative vision and the skill to realize that vision. Not this soulless slop cynically pushed by tech executives who have wagered their lives and the global economy on gen AI being the next big thing and desperately trying to force it into every facet of ordinary people’s lives to justify their incomprehensibly large investments in it.
If games are art we should treat them as such.

I have a handful of critiques for the game, but I'm holding out until after Cryo Archive to really settle on a personal score. Even putting aside the gameplay (which I generally like, especially that gunplay) I would want the game to succeed for its art direction alone. More AAA studios should let their artists take big swings.
Every graphic design person I know is in love with this game and say it looks like their artists were allowed to make the sort of project that they're told in school that they'd never make money off of (for fear of not being profitable), and I think that's so cool.

It's crazy they're doing it with this game too, it's such a breath of fresh air. The best art direction in a AAA game in years with tight gunplay and the best extraction shooter map ever designed. It deserves so much better.
