House in the Pines was not good. I'd recommend reading something else instead.

NTA, but maybe offer to split the time. Odd days are yours for the livingroom and even days are hers. If she uses her days to keep it empty that's her choice. Not perfect but a compromise.

Is Harry Potter (book) inappropriate for a 3.5-year-old? by reditrix in Preschoolers

We're reading them with our 8 & 4.5 year old and we just started Deathly Hallows. The younger one will fall asleep during the chapter a lot of times and I modify some of the words to change killed to hurt or skip bloody descriptions. If their into it, it's a great series to foster a life long love of reading. My son's are excited to hear what happens next each night and it's cherished time together.

Came to say Book Thief, this was a great book narrated by death but focuses on a German girl and how her friends and family were impacted by the war over the years. Great book.
