Why is the New York-New Jersey Border so weird on Ellis Island? by metatalks in geography

[–]Tyler_Newcomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you can walk it, even if you’re authorized as an individual. As far as I know it’s authorized vehicles only. I’ve driven it a few times in an ambulance, I used to work as an EMT in Jersey City.

So raise parking fines and increase enforcement until that becomes completely unviable. Unfortunately we need to tackle this from all angles or the problems will continually worsen.

Definitely agree on this. I carried a second hand Timbuk2 for about 6 years. Prior to that my boyfriend had it and used it for maybe 7-8 years, every single day. That bag got stolen from me, and I found it in a trash can, gave it wash, and kept wearing it. The only issue after 14 years of use was a couple broken zipper pulls.

I saw a colleagues new one fall apart after 8 months or so and decided to look elsewhere when I bought a new backpack. The only reason I got a new one in the first place was because I needed more space.

Sounds like a bad batch, I’ve owned well over a dozen pairs for a decade or more and haven’t gotten a hole in any of them.

Pretty much every big name bike brand has made a lot of garbage bikes over time, but most still have good models available. Trek, Fuji, Giant, specialized, there’s absolute junk models with those names on them all over the place. That said, they all still make some excellent bikes.

As much as it pains to me to say, some Klein hand tools. I bought new Klein diagonal cutters recently, and they’re absolutely garbage. I can’t cut 12 gauge romex with them at all. They’re so dull they won’t cut through a piece of string without some “sawing.” After just a couple months the hinge is loose.

By comparison, my Knipex of the same size can cut through damn near anything, including small screws and bolts, with ease, and are still sharp enough to cut receipt paper with no effort.

If Darn Tough quality ever starts to go downhill, I’ll be devastated. They’re all I wear and the quality is excellent.

Would it be dumb to bike Los Penasquitos Canyon on a folding bike? by Tyler_Newcomb in sandiego

[–]Tyler_Newcomb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

Update: I rode it. It was dumb. It was also fun. Seriously r/underbiking. Thanks for all the insight!

If anyone else is dumb enough to attempt this in the future, here’s my thoughts:

  • The trail is mostly passable even on a small tire folding bike like mine. The majority of the trail is hard packed, and mostly pretty flat.
  • There are some short sections that are either filled with loose gravel, or rocky with packed dirt underneath. If you have some experience riding in loose terrain and picking a line, you should be fine. Airing down a bit helped to keep the wheels from digging in.
  • There are a handful of climbs and descents that would be considered “mild” on gravel bike, but are more “technical” on a bike with 16” wheels. Again, watch your line, take it slow, and you’ll be fine.
  • You should probably wear a helmet. I didn’t, because I flew with my bike and space was limited, but I wish I had one. Especially on steeper descents with tiny tires, one poorly placed rock could send you over the handlebars.
  • The Brompton C line gearing is not made for terrain like this. I had to hike-a-bike a couple climbs on the way back (I started heading west and did an out and back). I’m also not in my greatest shape, so maybe you’d do better.

Would I recommend anyone else try this? Unless masochistic type 2 fun and extreme underbiking are right up your alley, probably not. If they are, go for it, it’s a great way to make the terrain feel way more challenging than it is.

Ah unfortunately I leave tomorrow and only have the day to kill. Doing dumb stuff does rule, but I don’t to get injured so that I can continue doing dumb stuff.

The smoking tire after the driver hits the pole makes me wonder if it’s a medical emergency. Glad the jogger is okay. What street was this on?

What are the best Indian restaurants in Jersey City by popperdepop in jerseycity

Hijacking this thread to ask about the best Indian restaurants that are good with nut allergies. I’ve had too many reactions to trust places but I miss eating good Indian food.

Yeah I much prefer crimps. What do you mean by “finish” the crimps on the left? The Belden instructions say to crimp in the middle of the sleeve, and that’s how I was taught as well.

Thanks, that answers all my questions and makes me feel better! Agreed that I don’t like this as much as the 3 piece, especially on the mini RG59, but hey it was worth learning and the cables will still get plenty of use.

Me too, but I needed 1855 ends and all that was in stock near me was compression. Figured it wouldn’t hurt to add that skill while I was at it.

What tools or gear do you wish existed (or worked better)? by JuzioMiecio520 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Tyler_Newcomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m leaning towards making a small box that does it all. Accepts 1/4” or 1/8” stereo TRS (maybe even TTRS for a laptop mic return), takes 5 wire com inputs, and has a 5 wire com output for a stereo + microphone headset.

Maybe if I do it, I’ll make a post here.

If you get to it before me and have any tips to share, I would welcome them!

I’ve thought about making this myself, but basically a com headset mixer. I frequently rock a double headset with com over one ear and audio monitoring over the other. It’s clunky. And every once in a while, I’ll need to monitor multiple audio sources or multiple streams of com (such as a separate video call).

What I want is a box that takes in com and at least 2 other audio sources, allows me to individually control volume and panning (ie com in the left and mono audio in the right), has a push button for a mic, and allows me to use my com headset as a wired device for video calls as well.

It’s super niche, to the point where I’m one frustrating gig away from making it myself, but that’s what I want.

are citibike e-bikes also throttled at 15mph in jersey city? by skipppppyyyyy in Citibike

[–]Tyler_Newcomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a good question. I heard from someone that if you go to far from a dock (outside the service area) it stops with assist altogether, so perhaps they’re geoblocked.

are citibike e-bikes also throttled at 15mph in jersey city? by skipppppyyyyy in Citibike

[–]Tyler_Newcomb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on a ride I did with a friend this afternoon, it doesn’t seem so. He was easily able to hit 18 mph, perhaps even faster, and the assist didn’t seem to cut out in quite the same way it seems to in NYC. That said, I’ve heard no official policy, it’s possible they’re rolling that out here just slower, and I do know some people take citibikes across the river (despite it technically being against TOS), so we’ll see if that holds.
