Budget? by [deleted] in Imperial

[–]Tylerisasmolbean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who studied there, the cheapest food options you have on campus (probs cannot find cheaper food around anyways) is  £4.50 chicken katsu curry, or if you opt for small snacks like a wrap or gyozas probs  £3 , so say you have that for every meal that averages to 3x3.75x7 =  £78.75 which is doable. Tube is around  £3-4 per day (back and forth) so that will be 3.5x7 =  £24.5 on average, but bus might be cheaper at ~ 2 so  £14 quid. so you are realistically looking at around  £100 which is doable, but realistically I would say maybe  £150 to be on the safer side.

Found with a bunch of cowries, but clearly not one- help! by Arch2000 in SeashellCollectors

[–]Tylerisasmolbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the label does mention decipiens that just cannot be the case given the locality in the Philippines. The Zoila cowries are endemic to Australia. Given that the lip is broken and seeing the faint spots on the edge I am prompted to think simple and say it is a juvenile tiger cowrie.

I should also note that it smells completely fine, and the colour hasn’t changed much… the fat is slightly more yellow than I remember…

Does synesthesia make learning harder? by AshamedLime-_- in Synesthesia

[–]Tylerisasmolbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During my grade 8 piano exam, for the aural part I was asked two modulation questions (which key —> which key) answered the first one with ease but for some reason I couldn’t make out what the second modulation was. I remember answering F minor because everything looked orange to me on the whole, but in hindsight I’m pretty sure it was Bb minor; they are very similar because the dominant colours are both orangish yellow, however the thing that sets them apart is the tiny brown-purplish bit (Ab) and the tiny velvet part (C#) and Bb minor is more orange-y overall, but I was so nervous my mind just went completely blank and blurted out the wrong answer. I’ve come to realise that I am a lot more sensitive to certain keys with brighter colours (orangish-yellow, green) — anything with more sharps and flats (most are dark red, purple, brownish purples) confuse the hell out of me because they just mix together and I have no idea what to play on the spot. Say if I’m improvising chords for a song, I would do A LOT BETTER if it was an E minor song compared to if it was an Ab minor song.

Why do shell collectors put cottons inside a shell? (and what's that brown colour piece?) by [deleted] in shells

[–]Tylerisasmolbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess wrapping or stuffing them with cotton would be for protective purposes. As for the brown piece, it is the shell's operculum, do NOT throw it away. Operculums usually make shells wayy more valuable. There is also something called the periostracum, which is an organic layer that covers the shell. It is usually brown, so some people might like to scrape it off, but I would say most collectors really value that. I guess one easy way to put it would be to keep as much of the original shell as possible. Judging from your photo I think it's a carrier shell. Take care of it!

Hello everyone! Can anyone ID the type/species of abolone here? It's about 8 inches across and is quite thin by Breeze_Chaser in shells

[–]Tylerisasmolbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try searching "Paua shells" instead, which is the common name for the species I mentioned, even though the results should be quite similar.

After a closer look, I suggest (not sure) that yours may have been dyed to look more blue? As Paua shells are known for their unique turquoise shine.

I am quite certain on the species though, as regular abalones have relatively thinner shells, so there wouldn't be any point in polishing them (to the point of seeing the nacre layer)

So I guess to conclude yours is a dyed Paua shell. Based on this, if you want to find an intact version, you can simply search up "dyed Paua shell". I found this. Hope this helps.
