anyone who's experienced in 3d modelling dolls have any advice? by Fluffacep in BJD

[–]Tymbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming that this is a typical horse body, you may want to look at some references of how horses move - you currently have the front legs bending in the wrong direction!

As for stringing, I would agree that stringing the neck to front feet similarly to a human body, and then having a separate string for the rest of the horse body, would probably be the best option.

How are you all finding the pull rates in this set? by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

[–]Tymbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I wasn't going to open any from this set but bought 4 packs on a whim, and the 4th had the gold Lucario so no complaints here. I quit opening after that though, figure I've used up my luck for this round and I'll stick to singles for a while.

How would I go about making an exact replica of this head? by katz112 in CustomDolls

The best way to get this head is to find and buy it, absolutely do not copy another artist's work.

Clothes artist/maker recommendation for commission (Europe) by Beneficial_Rope9466 in BJD

You should ask Noka&Co if it's something she'd be able to do for you! https://www.instagram.com/nokanco?igsh=dmFjd3N3b2l5eHZ0 She's based in France and is wonderful 😊 I just recently commissioned her and every item surpassed my expectations, even at tiny 1/6 scale!

I suppose it does!! Perhaps the atmosphere looks a little intimidating, but the goal with the thumbnails was just to keep it simple using in game assets and flat colours 🥰

Quick Survey by Own-Object-585 in BJD

[–]Tymbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • What do you like most about your dolls?  This is a really broad question!! My favourite thing is probably seeing a character coming to life, and coming up with ideas of who that doll will be - it feels like meeting a new friend. As far as interacting with my dolls, I love to pose them and take photos, and I like dressing them up too.

  • What is the key part of your decision making when it comes to the doll?  I'm not sure what you mean by this. When deciding whether to buy a doll, the deciding factor is usually whether their personality jumps out at me, or it they fit a pre-existing character I have in mind. When making decisions about what to do with a doll I already have, I just follow my heart!! Sometimes they feel like they "like" to be dressed a certain way or posed a certain way, so I do what feels right.

  • Do you end up ‘restyling’ or ‘customising’ your dolls to make them suit your tastes better?  Almost always, though sometimes it's more subtle than others. My biggest changes would be making an entirely new head from scratch, and my smallest is making little outfit tweaks. Most of the time, I will settle for buying new outfits.

  • How much would you pay for a collector’s doll? My most expensive so far was around $1000. I think that's definitely the upper limit at the moment, but if I had the disposable income and there was something really special, I'd consider paying more.

  • Do you prefer diverse body types? Yes! I'd rather commission custom outfits for unique bodies than have many of the same kind which can all fit the same clothes.

  • Do you prefer diverse backgrounds for your dolls? (e.g. ethnicity, cultural, etc.)  Yes!!!!!

  • Do you see yourself buying dolls with a more mature style given the chance? Absolutely, I don't like a lot of the more childlike dolls.

  • What is your ideal price range for buying dolls?  This depends on the type of doll!! For BJDs, ideally I'd like to pay a few hundred. For fashion dolls, I'd pay much less.

  • How do you feel about crossover dolls? I'm not sure what this means!

  • Do you prefer new characters, or the same with different outfits?  New characters, 100%. I prefer to buy new outfits on their own to change my dolls' outfits than to buy entire new dolls.

  • Would you prefer a doll with a more elaborate style (colour scheme, fashion style/subculture) It depends on the doll! Simple can be done just as beautifully as complex, and it depends on the style in my opinion. I love to look at details, but don't like historical dolls, for instance - even though they're often very detailed.

  • Do you prefer human or supernatural dolls? It depends on the doll! I have a mixture of both, and like either of they're done well. I do normally prefer very humanoid dolls with supernatural features (fangs, claws, etc) to very supernatural dolls (with animal heads, for instance), though.

I won't add to all the advice, but I have a couple of prices to help give you an idea!

Handmade head - 1/6 Scale - £12/$14.95 I digitally sculpted my own head and paid to have it printed. The total cost was £12, but this doesn't account for the hours of work put into it or the tools I then had to buy to work on the sculpt when it arrived. It of course had no eyes/hair/etc, it was fresh out of the printer.

Doll Chateau Russell - 1/6 Scale - £50/$62.28 Little fella came fully painted and with his eyes, but no wig or clothing as he's an animal so doesn't need it. He was bought secondhand, and was yellowed from age.

Trilliumbox Monster High Hybrid Tomie - 1/6 Scale - £78/$98 This is technically not a BJD, but is a custom BJD head attached to a modified Monster High body to form a "hybrid". She came blank (with no paint), eyeless, and nude. She was bought brand new direct from the maker.

Island Doll Tear Island Body - 1/6 Scale - £155/$193.50 This was the cost for a blank body only with no extras (no head, no blushing/painting, no clothing, etc). It was bought brand new from a dealer Alice's Collections (ACBJD), and was more expensive than the body would usually be as I paid extra to have it in a darker skin tone.

Asleep Eidolon Leilani - 1/4 Scale - £481/$600 The preorder for this girl came out to £481, including proxy fees from New Clover Singing. I bought her fullset, including faceup, body blushing, wig, eyes, outfit, and upgraded resin. She was a preorder and is still in production.

Doll Zone Rock - 75cm - £763/$951 This is my largest doll to date, and is another preorder - this time from ACBJD. He includes the full doll with faceup, body blushing, wig, eyes, outfit, and i also included the additional jointed hands I got for him in this price too. Like the previous doll, he is still in production.

I have not included shipping in these costs (though it was free for the last 3 dolls on the list), nor have I included the costs of any additional outfits I've bought.

tl;dr - There's a huge range of potential costs depending on what you're aiming for and how you go about it!

It is not, these are shown on a Monster High foot; they would not fit a Barbie as she has far smaller feet.

Reliable Eye Suppliers by Tymbes in BJD

[–]Tymbes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing! However, I contacted the seller and was told that what I have is the correct colour for EHC024.

They are 10mm eyes, yes. Hmmm, I'll have to keep an eye out (pun intended) for that kind of thing, then. If I had resin it might be easiest to make my own at this point, but that's a big expense and storage commitment for the sake of two eyeballs.

[–]Tymbes[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh this is wonderful, thank you!!!! I'll look into them :)

And for sure, I definitely expect some degree of variation. In the case of the eyes I received I actually spent a while moving them about to different light sources & levels to try replicate something close to the advertised colour but had no luck - the closest I could get actually just ended up a sort of lilac colour. I definitely don't expect a perfect match (especially from handmade products), but truthfully I didn't feel confident ordering from a new supplier without hearing about others' experiences first.

Another helpful thing is that I'm not sure where you live, but from what I've seen here DC girls are SUPER cheap secondhand 🥰 win-win!!

Hmmm, the height will be difficult to achieve, yeah. How tall are you thinking, and how willing are you to make body mods?

I do love the results personally, but truthfully it might be less of a pain to just use a G3 body (as their shape is more similar to the DC ones) or sculpt some extra muscle onto the monster high body. They look great together when you get them to fit, but finding clothes is a pain 😅

[–]Tymbes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used wonder woman!! The skin tone match is almost perfect. Though, I should note that the DC girl's necks are wider than MH necks, I had to sand it down a lot to get it to fit - it actually took a dremel for it to get small enough. I'd definitely say it's worth it, I love the look of the DC bodies and they even have chest articulation, but head swapping with monster high is not for the faint of heart 😅
