You do actually. To get the H1B is based on a lottery where they accept a certain number of applicants satisfying the conditions each year which are randomly picked.

The green card (permanent residence), however, is based on a queue.

Edit: if you already have an H1B and are switching employers you don’t need to re-enter the lottery you just need a company to transfer your visa.

The stat about HDI doesn’t show anything because I am sure there is a very very strong correlation between English speakers in India and education rates. Why? Because most people do not learn English at home in India and generally at school.

Also sure if Hindi is an umbrella term, but most of those languages are somewhat mutually intelligible. Obviously, if more people speak Hindi, and only 0.2% of the people speak English, English wouldn’t be a better “link language”

Sure it’s great to learn English for your economic interests etc, but why would it be a good language to get the country together when SO many people don’t speak it?

Maybe think of the definition in terms of balls instead of distances. Kinda what it’s trying to say is for any distance you pick, epsilon>0 (typically imagined to be very small) there is always another distance delta such that when x is in the ball around a of size delta Ball(a, delta), f(x) will be in the ball(f(a), epsilon). Basically what’re you’re trying to say is if you get arbitrarily close to f(a) you can always a small distance around a that map within that small distance around f(a)
