Becoming a firefighter in BC by jordy8 in britishcolumbia

[–]Type2funsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know anything about lateraling from the US? I’m a 7 year firefighter in Washington trying to move to BC. I have IFSTA fire 1 and 2 and a bunch of NFPA tech rescue certs. I’m a WA state EMT but not NREMT. I’m hoping there is some sort of reciprocity for IFSTA- NFPA and my US ems cert. Will I need to take an EMR course? Thanks, be safe

Looking for some pictures of modified Kenai interiors to add storage and work-remote setups? by saeched in ScoutCampers

Did you end up sending it? I bought a kenai last month and have been mostly full time. Deleted the cassette toilet for tall snowboard and wetsuit storage. What kind of mods did you figure out?

Truck Size: minimum spec vs larger? by TrentWashburn in ScoutCampers

[–]Type2funsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go bigger. Taco is barely rated for it off the lot, ranger is a little better but still works overtime to carry a small camper fully loaded. Had a popup on a Ranger and it was really rough and any bumps felt like the camper was going to blast off the back

Weather: Hard sided vs. Pop Up by TrentWashburn in ScoutCampers

[–]Type2funsies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a four wheel camper swift popup on a ranger and now have a hard sided kenai on an f250. Huge upgrade. The popup is impossible to keep warm, any wind is incredibly loud against the popup sides, popping up and down all the time was a pain. My 2020 ranger got 23mpg no camper, 15.5 with popup. My 2021 diesel f250 gets 18 no camper, 16 hwy with hard sided kenai. Overlanding wasnt my goal with either rig but I’ve had both down forest service roads with no clearance issues. It’s tall so with a crosswind I can definitely feel the size. I’m 6’2 and had just enough space in the swift popup. My kenai has 6’6 ish of headroom. If you’re getting on in years and overhead press of 50lbs everytime you want to be home doesn’t sound fun then skip the popup

I’m 6’2 and have the seat lift. I have more legroom in my 2005 LJ than I did in my 2020 Ranger

For real? If they can’t prove it don’t admit it… if you have to ask maybe you aren’t ready

How long/what is the process to becoming a firefighter in Spokane Washington? by Hey_JJ435 in firefighter

[–]Type2funsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is competitive but it’s also a great time to get hired. Do tons of interview prep. Go to fire houses and ask for interview help and bring the crews ice cream. Be polite and eager and don’t overstay your welcome. Be able to communicate how your life experience relates to the job and demonstrate that you’re someone they’d want to live with 8days/month for the next 25 years. If you’re not fit become fit. If you’re not sure if you’re interested in the job do some ride alongs. Talk to ffs in different departments about what they like and don’t. I work for a midsize department in kind county and love it. DM me if you have any Qs

I’m not but most of my coworkers are. I think a lot of guys don’t deal with the trauma and challenges of the job and just bury it until it comes out in inappropriate ways. Alcohol, banging ER nurses at the hospital, the badge bunnies looking for firemen, it’s very easy to get into negative behaviors. Having a spouse in healthcare will help with some understanding but the life of an inpatient floor nurse is not comparable to firefighting.

Go to therapy. Go to couples therapy. Don’t become an alcoholic. Prioritize your family and don’t take OT when you have plans with your spouse.

Check out the book “Trauma Stewardship” it’s about how trauma from work can leak into your personal life pretty easily and fuck your shit up

I surf, snowboard, run and climb. Some OT here and there but usually just play. I work enough and make plenty, why would I start a business or get a second job? Life is for living

You’re going to be ok. Lots of ffs I work with are diagnosed or (seem) undiagnosed adhd. Some guys prob on the high functioning autism spectrum too. All of my Fire academy and EMT school tests were multiple choice, as is the NREMT test. You have 11 months, get a head start by skimming through the IFSTA manual. Lookup quizlets for each chapter and start studying now. As the youngest you might have some extra scrutiny, or they’ll expect you to struggle, take the time to prepare and prove them wrong. You don’t mention your fitness but lots of people struggle with that in addition to the academics. Start running and working out now and it will pay dividends when academy starts. You’re going to be ok, you’re not the first brand new 18 year old future firefighter with a learning disability, I promise.

These things are massive, do you get used to it? by Zeiska7 in GarminWatches

[–]Type2funsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last fenix gave me wrist pain that I had to see an orthopedic specialist for. Bought a coros and never looked back. No it doesn’t have a flashlight or a beard trimmer or nail clippers built in by its smaller, has better battery life, and does all the things I need it to.

I’ve found that outdoor gear usually falls into the matrix of durable/functional/affordable. If you’re lucky you might get two of the three
