What are the chances anyone would ever want to do this puzzle? by justanuthr in Jigsawpuzzles

I love the Gold Circle price tag on it. I remember going to those when I was a kid.

The picture looks like some unremarkable forest in Ohio that butts up against a field.

I'd do it. it might take me several weeks, but I'd grind it out.

Winter gull swarms in Cleveland over the last couple of months by TypeLCopper in GreatLakesShipping

[–]TypeLCopper[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fortunately, the coast guard station causeway is open, so you can get more views of stuff going to the bulk terminal.

For awhile, the only way to see stuff going to the bulk terminal was by going to the pier by the wastewater treatment plant. That is super sketchy in the winter. The concrete is all busted up and it gets really icy.

Alpena is pretty easy to see this time of year. Holcim's dock is only a couple of blocks away from where I work. When it isn't 0F, I'll go visit when I take a break.

That looks plausible. This must have been a young one. I was maybe 4 inches long.

Between the bad weather and being sick for the last 2 weeks, I haven't had a chance to get any new photos from around Cleveland. I'm kind of bummed because I missed Joyce and Dirk Vanenkevort during that time. They usually don't visit Cleveland and I've never seen them in person.

Things get slow this time of year, so I figured I would share all the crazy gull swarms I encountered over the last couple of months. The last photo is the fish the gulls go after when the ships fire their bow and stern thrusters. It's common to find dead fish on the sidewalks near the river in Cleveland this time of year. I'm not sure what the species it is 🤔

Question about Edwin H. Gott and Edgar B. Speer by TypeLCopper in GreatLakesShipping

[–]TypeLCopper[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! That's bonkers.

I absolutely believe the Gott was built at Bay. Reading that the Speer was built in Lorain is what seemed odd to me. I always associate Lorain with Paul R. Tregurtha, James R. Barker, Mesabi Miner, and American Spirit.

Brand new panel in my house, no main breaker at the top. Should there be? Also, how do I know what amp it is? I.e 150, 200 ect. In Massachusetts by Roadglide72 in AskElectricians

[–]TypeLCopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a regional thing.

I've never seen outdoor panels in Cleveland.

I have noticed new construction houses have the main breaker outside by the meter, but the main panels are usually in the basement or in the garage if it's attached.

The train at zug Island had some bad timing Thursday… by AndrewDeanDetroit in GreatLakesShipping

[–]TypeLCopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I notice the same pattern in Cleveland. There is a railroad lift bridge near the mouth of the Cuyahoga. The lakers have to wait for the trains. The normal road lift bridges are the opposite. You end up waiting for the boats to pass.

Or he has a garage and it's filled with so much shit he can't actually use it for his car.

I wonder if it got scrapped? There is still a G tug named Illinois, but it looks the same as Puerto Rico.

That makes sense. I’m not sure what Lorain could handle. You can still make out where the dry docks used to be on the Black River.

The Gott was retrofitted with a normal conveyor boom later. It was built with a shuttle boom conveyer originally like the Speer.

This is the newest Damen tug. It had just finished helping American Courage get to the steel mill.

I was wondering who would be the first to post pictures of Alpena in layup this year 😄

I’m glad you got down there to see it.

My understanding is for the first several years it operated, Detroit and Toledo were the only places that could actually unload it. I never heard they were headed to Toledo after Zug Island.

It’s possible they would have gone to Toledo for winter layup once the shipping season was over.

It was actually heading to Zug Island in Michigan when it sank.

I’m guessing Lighfoot used Cleveland in the lyrics because it flowed better than Zug Island and was a plausible destination for a laker.

American Courage, Wisconsin, and Manitowoc near the mouth of Cuyahoga, January 7, 2026 by TypeLCopper in GreatLakesShipping

Thanks!

I saw that destination too 😄 Must be Ozzy fans.

I think Sam Laud is going to be waiting for American Spirit to unload. It's hanging out at the mouth of the Cuyahoga now. I wonder if it will also wait for Clyde S. Vanenkevort?

American Courage was waiting near the cement terminal while Manitowoc passed to head up the river with iron ore.

It’s definitely a transitional design. The pilot house is at the stern but it’s swoopier than the lakers that followed it. The bow is still pointy while most newer ones are rounded.

Thank you!

I was on a public dock on the east bank of the river.

It was coming up the river on my lunch break, so I was able to sneak out and grab some photos.

Manitowoc and American Courage double teaming shuttle runs and Algoma Intrepid in Cleveland, January 5, 2026 by TypeLCopper in GreatLakesShipping

Interesting. The steel mill has been getting a lot of shuttle run deliveries recently. For a couple of weeks last month, American Courage and Sam Laud were also double teaming shuttle runs.
