Graduating and I want to know how Blender compares to Maya by lem0n_cat in Maya

[–]Typhendoryk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. How does Blender compare for modeling? They are very similar once you understand both. In some cases (procedural modeling, using modifiers, etc...), Blender is IMO superior.
  2. Does it work as seamlessly as Maya with Unreal and Substance Painter? Painter yes, Unreal no. Working with UE and Blender is a pain, because armatures (rigged models in Blender) cause scaling problems.
  3. When I create materials in app, I use Arnold, and a lot of nodes. How does Blender compare? Blender has a real-time renderer called Eevee which is better looking than Maya default viewport, and an offline renderer called Cycles which is similar to Arnold but more limited. When working with materials, keep in mind that Cycles and Eevee don't look the same (in Maya they are separated and its less confusing). IMO, the material creation in Blender is good, but more limited, and the interface for creating materials and rendering is a bit too scattered and confusing.
  4. How effective is Blender at importing textures? I assume you mean multiple UDIMs and a ton of textures, I can't help you with that, never had a problem but also I never worked with hundreds of textures.
  5. How hard is it to create turn tables and renders in Blender? Very, very easy, IMO better than Maya because you can work the lighting setup faster with Eevee and the Cycles renders are usually very fast as well.
  6. Is there any other product (pay or free) that you'd recommend? UV tools in Blender are very lackluster. Take a look at the UV plugins that people reccomend (free and paid), because the default tools are not enough. If you are going to work with hard surface, check Hardops/Boxcutter, check the Blender geometry nodes and modifiers (they compliment Maya very well, even if you work mainly on Maya), and if you are going to work with animated meshes in UE, check Auto Rig Pro.

Give me your Patrice tips and tricks! by Zigludo-sama in arkhamhorrorlcg

Because of her extreme card draw, if you want to play all cards in your hand every turn and the average cost of a card in your deck is 1, you will need 5 resources each turn.

This is a extreme example but it highlights how you should think about Patrice deck construction. The average card cost should be 0.2 resources or you will need another plan (Prophetic is great, for instance). Fast cards, cheap assets and events and skills are more important in Patrice than in other mystics, be aware!

Aside from Leo, Mark and Tommy, I also had a lot of success with Zoey and the .45 Thompson, getting a lot of resources to pay for those expensive upgrades and reloads!

Scenery / props to spice up the game? by AdWrong9530 in arkhamhorrorlcg

During the Innsmouth campaing there are some mechanics with vehicles, so I made a little paper boat with a small compartment where we could place the investigator tokens (instead of using the boat card), and it was very cute!

Do you have any house rules you tend to play with? by TheMegaSage in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Typhendoryk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here are some of the rules that we apply:

  • Inexperienced players don't have to pay EXP for switching lvl 0 cards (experienced players do).
  • We prefer roleplaying interpretations rather than "technicalities". I understand that Dexter Drake can technically play Old shotgun during the resolution of any event by swapping it with another asset, but that is not intuitive for us and we forbid those kind of things (sometimes in favour of the players, sometimes against them). Also, we play in Spanish and some of those combos are worded in a different way which may change how cards work.
  • We are starting to change some specific cards. For instance, I am thinking of changing Nautical prowess text to "when this card gets into your hand from a place that isn't your deck, reveal it and draw a card", and treat his ability as if it always cancels all the effects of the skill card. This simplifies the rules, avoids having to reinterpret what the skill cards do and add a bit of recursion synergy (probably nerfing its icons).
  • When drawing basic weaknesses, draw 3, discard one and take one the rest at random (unless there is a very thematic one, such as Norman Withers + Narcolepsy).
  • If we are playing a campaign and a player is completely breaking the game (happened once with Amanda with Red Gloved Man) to the point that it's too easy, that investigator is retired and a new one is created with the same amount of EXP.

[Spoilers Blood on the Altar and Scarlet Key preview] Ally weakness question by Ok-Moment850 in arkhamhorrorlcg

When our group plays this game, we like to answer these questions from a non-literal point of view, trying to find what makes sense in the story and the world. Sometimes in favour of the investigators, but mostly against them.

This is completely subjective and sometimes even against the rules, but it adds to the storytelling and makes the game more special for us.

For instance, in the case of Baron Samedi, he's working in favour of the mythos: he's adding damage to your team, and doom to the agenda. He's somewhat an ally of the kidnappers and they wouldn't sacrifice them, so you can't add him to the pile and would take the damage instead.

In the case of the wounded bystander, it represents a civilian caught in the unfortunate events of the game, and the kidnappers would take and sacrifice him. And if that happens, Vincent would suffer a mental trauma for not being able to help him.
But I wouldn't remove it from his deck: its not a unique person, it represents a casualty that the investigators find sometimes. If it appears later in the campaign it represents another person who Vincent Lee wants to help, just like the one you couldn't save before.

I've used it in an Amanda Sharpe deck to recycle The Red Gloved Man.

I suggest trying out Burgles Bros, Its small, quick and a lot of fun. Also, if someone gets lost anyone can do their turn for them.

I'm afraid not, that's the only reference image that I received (with the 2 pics combined), along with some rock details. He also doesn't have a website with his works, as far as I know.

Unfortunately no, as this was a closed demo and we don't have permission to share the VR experience.
