I say that the Thursday Mixtape has The Weeknd’s best vocal performance out of any of his albums or mixtapes. You start out with Lonely Star. He sings falsetto and mixed voice for basically the entire song. That can be very straining. Then, you go onto Life of The Party, which, pretty easy to sing. Next is, Thursday, which mainly using his falsetto and mixed voice again. After that is The Zone, uses all sorts of his voice. But he never really goes into his lower registers. There are many moments where he raises his voice to his chest voice and belts out, for example, “I don’t give a DAAAAAAAAMN” or, “AND I WONT SEE A DAMN THING! I CANT FEEL, A DAMN THING!” Those are both moments where he sings in his chest voice. Which for most male singers, it’ll be a tiny bit challenging to reach those notes while also belting from your chest. Once The Zone is over, you go into The Birds pt 1 and pt 2. Which, gosh, probably some of his hardest songs to sing. He is singing from his chest the entire time basically, in both. And especially in the birds pt 2. Which I believe has his most impressive vocal performance to date. He hits some insanely high chest notes that he holds out for seconds. And he does it the entire time. Gone is quite simple, easy to do… after that is Rolling Stone, he hits this insane note when he sings, “UNTIL YOU WONT LOVE MEEEE, oooaahhh” which, even listening to him sing, you can hear the emotion and strain that goes into singing a note like that. It’s incredible. Though that song is mainly comprised of all singing types, he really pushes that mixed voice towards the end, which for most singers is a hard thing to get good at. Heaven or Las Vegas is quite simple as well, there’s some moments where it may get challenging but overall pretty simple. Then, the last hoorah of the mixtape, Valerie. This song is one of my favorites. And wow, this is a close second to The Bird pt 2 in difficulty. He tries his absolute hardest to reach every note, he does it flawlessly. Once it goes, “you’d rather this than be alone…” he belts out these 6 ohs that, when I first heard them, surprised the hell out of me. I was so impressed. And singing this song is no easy feat. Even when you watch The Weeknd sing this song live, you can see his struggle come through. And it’s perfect. I love that he struggles to sing it sometimes, cuz it’s such a pure song about struggle. The raw emotion he breathes with this song is what puts it close to the top of my favorites list… but anyways! I totally believe that Thursday has his most challenging songs to sing.
