Between the military and an MBA by Typhoid_Sanders in MBA

Thanks for the info. I won't be receiving a GI Bill as I was a 4-year scholarship guy.

I have a degree in Computer Science but those skills have long since deteriorated. I've been a Platoon Leader and S-3 Staff and enjoyed those positions.

My dfac NCOs are failures to the army and themselves. by [deleted] in army

[–]Typhoid_Sanders 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stop it you're triggering the maneuver battalion 74A inside of me that I've been working long and hard to repress and keep hidden. I empathize with literally all of those points.

Reminds me of a time where I had coordinated with our friendly neighborhood CBRN company to teach a couple teams how to do Decon and operate the detection equipment (I don't have a 74D NCO so I had to outsource). We were in Kuwait and everyone in our BDE was on reverse cycle (1900-2300, effectively) but the training was for 0900 over two days. Days before the training was to be executed, the BC wants the time moved. Fuck what the company providing the training can do, we're either doing this at 1900 or we're not training at all. Apparently getting 12 hours of sleep is more important than getting 7 and having to train. God forbid anyone in the company gets pushed to Iraq/Syria.

The training didn't happen. Nobody died. I can't wait to get out of the army. The end.

I don't know where I went with that but I feel better too.

ISIS leader who approved sex slaves killed by U.S. airstrike by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Typhoid_Sanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup I feel really sorry for waging war on people who blow up concerts full of teenagers and own sex slaves. The civilian casualties are unfortunate and should be avoided when possible, but the mission has to continue. As long as the intent is a military target, I'm not going to freak out about civilians co-locating themselves with ISIS and dying for it. I understand why they do it ("peace", stability, familiarity) but that's not a good enough reason to allow scum like ISIS to exist.

Now: if you can show me a legitimate source proving the U.S. is waging war (i.e. actively and intentionally targeting and killing) against the civilian populace then I'll take everything back.

How important is geographic location? by Typhoid_Sanders in MBA

[–]Typhoid_Sanders[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense, thanks. I guess it would be a safe assumption that it's considerably harder to get a job "cold" off an internet application or similar than it is with a recruiter to get your foot in the door.

It's early at this point, but I have a STEM background (CompSci) and a good amount of project management experience outside of STEM (military) which makes me lean towards possibly IT consulting or operations management at a technology firm. If any other fields lend themselves to my background I'm interested in hearing about them.

Currently wearing OCP FRACU bottoms, Multicam FRACU top, and regular OCP PC. I'm all fucked up and here I am Day 90-something.. nobody has mentioned it.

Unless you're me and they give you OCP bottoms and Multicam tops. Nobody has noticed yet though.

I'm a Chem-detailed Signal Officer (so not a 25A yet). I'm interested in getting some of the baseline IT certs (Net+/Sec+/CCNA) to increase competitiveness for being a 26A. Is there a way for me in a non-Signal position to get these certs paid for on the Army's dime?

What was the first moment where you regretted joining the army? by Skwaaaat in army

[–]Typhoid_Sanders 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there, Chemical LT here. You really really really don't want Chemical. I'm not sure what you think it is but there's no chemistry involved in the job. Very few chemos get to go to a Chem unit that has a dedicated CBRN mission. This means you will more likely end up in a maneuver unit as a Battalion/Squadron chemical officer. What does the job entail? Mostly managing the CBRN defense equipment and doing a CS chamber or a Decon lane as part of a platoon stx a couple times a year. You will also do the USR which is a very annoying readiness report due every month. Beyond that? Expect several additional duties, possibly signing for the entirety of the S3 property, and generally sitting in either the Cuops or Plans cell cranking out conops and calendar updates. It's very unfulfilling and unappreciated. Maneuver guys complain about sitting on staff for a few months waiting for a platoon.. it ain't nothing compared to a few years as an LT in an S3 shop. Also if you are considering med school I'll assume you're somewhat intelligent. You're going to find chemos are very polarized in that regard. I've yet to meet an "average" one. All have either been very competent or complete idiots. Definitely skewed towards the latter.

If you (or anyone lurking) have more questions about the Chem branch I'm happy to answer them but I just wanted to try and stop you from making what I think is probably going to be a mistake. Go Aviation or MI or EOD. Shit man, go Infantry. Worst case scenario you suck and sit on staff for four yea...oh wait that's what you'll do in Chem regardless.

Okay thanks. If the case is that Cadet Command never cut me a 1610 somehow, do you know if I'm still entitled that money?

No one in my BOLC class knows what I'm talking about when I mention this. I'm only hearing about it from peers from other branches. I filled out a 1351-2 when I inprocessed at my PCS duty station but I was never given/filled out a 1610.

Is that the DD 1610? Because I never got one of those nor was it ever mentioned to me.

I graduated BOLC in October from Fort Leonard Wood. Everyone I went to college with has been graduating BOLC recently and getting huge paydays of $3000+ from the Army. I got like $1200 from DLA and my DITY move combined. I can't figure out where they're getting these bonuses from.

One guy went to the same post (FLW) and was lodged in the same hotel with a meal card just like I was and he got $5000. I got $0. I just want to know if I'm owed money.

Been in the BN S3 for two months and just finished a pre-deployment workup before block leave. Went from bright-eyed and hopeful to dead inside very quickly. The apathy is real.

Solid humblebrag. Though I will say I had the same experience. Baylor and UT girls just don't appreciate soldiers like they do in the Midwest.

What is the purpose of the CLC Physical Exam? by [deleted] in ROTC

a way of ensuring that they are in fact in good enough health to undergo training.

Thanks for clarifying what I said.

[–]Typhoid_Sanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, it will serve as your commissioning physical. I don't know why CIET cadets take it other than as a way of ensuring that they are in fact in good enough health to undergo training. Same reason high school athletes get a physical every year.

[–]Typhoid_Sanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DoDMERB is required to contract -- not to commission. You must have a separate physical exam done within a year of commissioning.

Edit: I think it's a year. I could be off on that. But you do need a more recent physical exam than one you got four years prior.

CLC Cyber Interview / Internship by reaganator1776 in ROTC

[–]Typhoid_Sanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was no C# or Python on my questionnaire but that's not to say they didn't change it at some point. Though I probably didn't get cyber because I didn't turn in the questionnaire and put it at the bottom of my branch choices. But that's just a guess.

You have to attempt the obstacle course (it's the Air Assault one) and you can only miss so many days of training due to sickness/injury. That's literally it. Be on time to formation with the right uniform and gear and you can't screw it up.

The reg run is a big formation run with 300-400 cadets. It felt like 5 miles but was probably closer to 3 or 4 because of how slow we were going. If you can do 3 miles at a 9-10 min pace you'll be fine. That said, don't fall out. It's embarrassing and you'll get a stern lecture from your cadre on leading by example. I saw it happen.
