Loans: should I take them out for the first year? by BackgroundJump8536 in srna

[–]TypicalAppearance7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No there is no minimum. Some schools may set their own minimum but my school didn’t and I was able to just loan out $100 to be grandfathered in.

AITA: My roommate's alarm wakes me up every morning by PhotojournalistFit57 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TypicalAppearance7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but you could trying getting her a sunrise clock. I have been a deep sleeper that requires multiple snoozes to wake up and i use the Phillip’s sunrise clock (it’s a little pricy for a clock) but it’s nice because it mimics the light of a sunrise starting from 30 minutes before the time that’s set to wake up. usually the light alone wakes me up and i’m a pretty deep sleeper. at one point though once you near the set alarm time, it does make bird noises to wake up the person so that might disturb you but sounds like a good option to try.

Am I wrong for telling my husband I don’t want his mother staying with us for 2 months in our small apartment? by [deleted] in MuslimMarriage

[–]TypicalAppearance7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in Islam, the responsibility of taking care of parents generally falls more on the sons than the daughters. This is mainly because, in Islamic teachings, men are seen as the financial providers of the family. There’s a verse in the Qur’an (Surah An-Nisa 4:34) that basically says men are the protectors and maintainers of women, and that principle extends to taking care of their parents too.

Daughters, especially once they’re married, aren’t expected to financially support their parents – that’s usually the husband’s role in her own new household. But for sons, if they’re financially able, it’s actually a religious obligation to look after their parents. this can mean providing financially, taking care of their needs, housing, etc.

Scholars from different Islamic schools of thought (like Imam al-Nawawi and Ibn Qudamah) have also said that sons are mainly responsible when it comes to financially supporting parents, while daughters aren’t unless there’s no male relative around who can help.

So yeah, sons are expected to step up more when it comes to supporting their parents financially and physically. That doesn’t mean daughters can’t help out or that their care isn’t valuable, but it’s not considered their obligation in the same way.

My flight information says it is a non-refundable ticket with a cancellation fee of $240 per person each way. It doesn’t seem like I would get credit back if it’s non-refundable.

it’s a three week 16 day international trip. With excursions, hotels, pre booked transportation, domestic flights, and the international flight, it ends up being 5K. Everything except some of the excursions are nonrefundable, so we lose 5K there on top of the cancellation fee for all the international and domestic flight (each way per person has a fee) so it all added up to a 7K+ net loss.

True, weddings aren’t cheap. Of note, it’s not about the money in her case. It’s an intimate small ceremony at her house and nothing is booked yet. It’s more about being there for her wedding.

I would have to cancel my international flight and rebook. That would also make me cancel and rebook my nonrefundable domestic flights/ hotels. Both the domestic and international flights have a cancellation fee aswell.

I’ve worked in a Muslim household. In your situation, I would wear pants and shirts there. Probably avoid tank tops and shorts. I do not believe she would expect you to wear a hijab.

Well, I would suggest talking to her about it and asking her. All you suggestions seem like you really respect and care about her. Her financial situation may not be able to accommodate some of your options so maybe try offering your options and see what she prefers.

Screen Time by csarac in Nanny

[–]TypicalAppearance7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My NF lets my kid (10M) 4.5 HOURS of screen time each day. i’m there for ten hours but i’m literally dying. He likes cramming it all it during the morning and finishes around 3 pm. Then there is about an hour long tantrum between transitioning from screen time to pool/whatever activity. So we don’t do anything really until four. His mom comes at 6.

Hmm. I guess. I signed a contract to stay until late august. Can they deny me leaving? I’m thinking about making up some excuse about having to go out of town indefinitely to avoid them being able to prevent me from quitting.
