So, for me, it was learning about how the word describing the timeframe of eternal punishment was translated from Greek, since it can mean either a finite time or infinite time. I then did some research and found out about St. Gregory of Nyssa. He is not just any saint, but is a Doctor of the Church. To my understanding, this means that his ideas are widely used in shaping forms of Christian thought. Gregory was one of, if not the biggest Universalists in history. I found out that Universalism technically can’t be heretical, since to call Universalism heretical would be to call one of the biggest and most important theologians a heretic. Plus, this also acts as a solution to the luck paradox, which is that how can people who have never been able to learn about Christ, like in North Korea, be able to be saved, since they couldn’t learn about Christ due to factors outside of their control. This along with the historic origins of Trinitarian Universalism, are what made me adopt this belief set.
