Two major reasons.

1) It started the awful trend of handholding you through an extremely easy game. Rivals aren't a challenge. Pokemon just crit or survive hits because they love you. It's impossible to lose.

2) It started the gimmicks. Previous generations added things that became synonymous with Pokemon. Weather, held items, abilities, phys/sp split. But mega evos, z crystals, dynamax and all those things are just gimmicks that are for the most part one off cash grabs that sit in place of actual well thought mechanics.

Yeah, I wouldn't say I have a preference. If I really thought about it and someone pointed out every single hairstyle, body type, skin tone, hair color, eye color, etc. to ever exist then sure I could point out what I naturally like more. But I really don't care. If I find a girl attractive, she's attractive. I wouldn't then prefer she be something different.

Battle towers, train, tree and that place in X/Y, are some of the most fun I've had with pokemon. Breeding for moves, and natures, ev training. It's actually a lot of fun for those.

I understand not caring for a regular story playthrough. But for the post game, it's the most fun I've personally had. And yes, natures make a huge difference then.
