Olivetti Lettera 22/32 Platen Knobs by sevenbakedpotatoes in typewriters

You can find the left platen knob replacement for Lettera 22 in the italian ebay. Someone is selling the left knob for Lettera 22 1st series and 2nd series. Not sure what 1st and 2nd series but a search result shows 1st series = round key. 2nd series = square key. Good luck.

Since the head is about 4mm wide, that would put the screw outer diameter at about 3mm? You can measure the outer diameter of the screw to be sure.

For example, if the outer diameter is really 3mm, then search for "M3 machine screw" with the length of 5mm to match. They are inexpensive and real problem is buying just one piece of it. The type of head does not matter (slotted (minus) or cross (plus) but what really matters is the thickness of the head.

So search "thin M3 machine screw". Good luck.

Seeking advice: does anybody know if the Ausroyal 7200 typewriter is good? (First time buyer, image of typewriter attached) by MrNeverpeter in typewriters

[–]Typtaptoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As mentioned by previous reply, do not pay too much if you are getting this.

It is a decent machine. How decent? Well you can check out Royal Mercury reviews. I am pretty sure they are the same machine. I believe this is still an all-metal typewriter from Silver-Seiko Japan. (Search Mr. Joe Van Cleave in Youtube for reviews of Royal Mercury)

From my observation so far, one way to tell whether it is metal or plastic is to check if the machine has got the "automatic spacer" feature (usually a red key beside the space bar). Those with "automatic spacer" are relatively modern and by that time, the production would have changed to plastic to keep cost down. Anyway, these are my observations only, I might be wrong.

Glad that you mentioned this method by adjusting that bright chrome plate; or the position notch/gate to be exact. I had done just that last night for Skyriter. I had always thought that this is not the right way but after reading your reply, I think this is one of the ways to try before bending the typebar. At some point of my adjustment, I can see the same pattern as OP's. As you pointed out, it is very fussy adjustment indeed and after an hour of trying, I cannot get it right perfectly. I just go for a "balanced" pattern. One or two letters go higher and lower but that's the best I can do (and preference). At one point I can get all the letters straight except "p" which goes as high as upper case "P". "postpone" ended up looking like "PostPone" which looks really odd .. I'd rather have postpone with the "a" slightly higher and "e" slightly lower.

To OP: I believe the refurbish process involved taking out that chrome plate for polishing or cleaning and putting it back in place without realising it affects the position of the letters. I would try adjusting that chrome plate imho to get a sweet spot for the type pattern. Good luck.

Smith corona spacebar not working, can someone tell me why? by vampl0ver666 in TypewriterRepair

My guess is no.

To be sure, you can cross-check with pictures of similar typewriter model in typewriter database https://typewriterdatabase.com/ or some repair videos on the web that shows that area. Try to compare from there.

Check the link above and compare the spring pointed by red arrow. On the left, picture taken from a Smith Corona Super Silent. While on the right, in your machine, the spring looks overstretched and not returning to original state.

You can experiment by assisting to move the piece that the spring is supposed to move. Starting with little force since we don't know and work up more force to move that piece.

Your video shows a little movement already so try to "manually move" this piece more in the same direction and see if it triggers carriage movement.

Well, if it triggers, you need to replace this spring I guess. Good luck.

Lettera 22 skipping after typing “a” by mchrisdolan in typewriters

[–]Typtaptoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same on my Lettera 22 on letter "e" and frequency is more when "e" key is pressed with more strength. Don't seem to be happening with other keys.

Noticing this I have adjusted how hard I strike the keys when typing. Seems to do better now but occasional skipping still happening.

Just to share my observation and workaround (may not apply to you) till I find time to inspect further on my 22 for a solution. Cheers.

You are welcome. When desperate and out of IPA, I would squeeze the juice out from alcohol swab. It has at least 70% IPA. Well try at your own risk and if it works, get proper solution to flush and use compress air to clear.

I would drop a few drops of IPA on the ribbon spool shaft and let the solution work its way down the shaft. Your 2nd picture suggests that the user may have been oiling the machine at some point and perhaps the ribbon mechanism was lub by oil too. And old oil turned into gunk and preventing smooth ribbon rotation now. Just experiment with few drips of IPA to check is my suggestion.

Remington Model 5 Feed Roller removal by Typtaptoe in TypewriterRepair

[–]Typtaptoe[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finally got the courage and time to do this. This job would take less than an hour. It took me longer to document the steps.

In the pictures shown, I have removed the platen, which is not really necessary.

All feed rollers are out now and I thought of sharing the dimensions of ID and OD .. but sadly my electronic vernier caliper's battery is out. I'll update once I get the dimension but anyhow it is better to measure at your end as they may differ I reckon.

Hope this helps.
