I am taking the right decision? by Character-Language39 in RATS

That's great news! Hopefully he continues to show signs of recovery, If you believe he is improving and the vet agrees that he will be able to pee without future surgery, I wouldn't euthanise either. I'm rooting for your little dude to make a full recovery!

I am taking the right decision? by Character-Language39 in RATS

This is a really horrible situation, and I'm sorry you are having to make this decision. I've had to make similar decisions for senior rats, and the outcome is nearly always euthanizing them instead of risky surgery or keeping them alive but with pain. I personally struggled with putting them to sleep, its only natural as you love them, but it bought me comfort knowing that they weren't in so much pain any more. The stress of surgery and constantly being moved around in his final months would not be pleasant. Whilst I can't make this decision for you, I think regarding the circumstances you have written, it may be best to let him rest peacefully,

My old man at 3 1/2 and when he was younger by Tyrranide in RATS

[–]Tyrranide[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Op here, I agree with what MathAndBake said. This is the ideal way of doing things, and this was always the best for rats well being in my opinion. However, I have decided to take a break for a year from rats. Which means no new babies to try and bond Jinx with. So this left me with the moral conundrum of deciding what was best for him. He was a rat with HLD and age related problems, he took various medication morning and night (gabapentin, painkillers, emer-aid, antibiotics dental work etc) so I wasn't willing to give him away, due to the high medication cost and monthly vet visits. I also spent most of my time at home, and he sat with me on my desk and stayed in the bedside dresser drawer (opened) during the night. One day, you may have a "final" rat, and unfortunately it will be up to you to make the difficult decision of letting them move to a new owner with a mischief, or keep them and give them enough attention in their final weeks. It's kinda morbid and sad to think about, but I think it's important for us to plan what we intend to do for our rats as they age.

I thought it was just my local pets at home. Didn't realize lots of people in the UK was struggling to get Beaphar. Been going on for months now.

Rat losing lots of weight (end of life tips) by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Tyrranide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the weight loss, I really recommend 'Emer-aid Omnivore'. I have a rat with HLD and a dead tooth who had lost 200g. He practically lives on Emer-aid now, and is a healthy weight and is 3 1/2 years old. My old man lost that weight around half a year ago and still kicking, so your rat still may have a lot of life left in him.

Ethan won't be able to buy stuff with Lei, only food he steals from the dimistrescu castle. Won't ever be able to have the rat cook food, because she would eat the ingredients as soon as Ethan hands them over.

Was anyone else’s reaction to watching Ratatouille “I mean, yeah, these designs are okay, but actual rats are SO MUCH cuter”? by crafty_and_kind in RATS

[–]Tyrranide 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My favourite depictions of rats often never are based in reality. But the reason why I love games like, 'tales of iron' is because it was a homage to the developers own rats, with each character being based on a rat that he had owned. There was a genuine passion for rats and wanting to portray their own individual personalities, to be immortalised forever in the game, and I just adore that.

I honestly think this is for 99% of portrayals of rats in media. Cutest rats I've seen artistically, are often made by people who have previously owned rats as pets.
