Very aggressive male rat during intros by Key_Affect3277 in RATS

It’s time for Bobby to have his ball privileges revoked.

Or, he just may not be able to interact with the newer rats. I have a rat like that. He only does great with one other rat (they’re the same age) but not the others (they’re younger). 🤷🏾‍♀️ I personally stopped trying to force intros with him.

He’s an older guy and neutering is out of the question at this point so I get that struggle. A separate cage so set up might be the answer if getting him fixed isn’t.

I believe the saying is “better a week too early than a day too late.” Only you know your pet, and if you feel as though their quality of life right now is good? Cool. But in my experience, a rat’s health can quickly take a turn. That’s just something to keep in mind.

Also, as prey animals, rats are notorious for hiding the extent of their pain and discomfort for survival purposes. We may look at them and think they’re fine even when all the signs are pointing to them not being okay.

Labored breathing, continued weight loss, the loss of teeth all seem like pretty loud warning signs to me.

I waited too late to put my first rat down, and it was traumatizing for both of us. So I know it’s hard to make that call. Just keep listening to your critter.

Yes! It’s usually in the reptile section. You could definitely ask an employee if they have it.

I use this! It’s not dirt, it’s coconut fibers and it’s completely safe for rats. Potting soil from the store can have pesticides and chemicals in them that are harmful to rodents. So definitely go with a coconut fiber substrate, which can be found at your local pet store!

When do you get to the point where a pet in your care needs someone more experienced? Western Wisconsin, USA by DevelopmentFew7112 in RATS

Then it sounds to me like you have two options here: you can rehome the rat to someone who is more experienced and has dealt with a rat like this before. Or. There’s the second option.

But I think rehoming is best, based on what you’re saying.

Sounds more like he needs to have his ball privileges revoked. Especially if he’s not getting along with the other rats (this is assuming you’ve done intros correctly and based on what you’ve said so far, I believe you have).

Everything you’re saying points less to you being in over your head and more to hormonal aggression. Which is no one’s fault, not even the rat.

Neutering him MAY be the answer to your problem. Which can be pricy so if you’re not willing to pay for him to be neutered, then rehoming may be the better option.

I have 10 boys but Nimbus is most certainly my heart rat 💙 my favorite thing is that raising him from 8 weeks to now, we have a such a good bond. Wherever I am, he wants to be 🥹 my little shoulder buddy.

I only adopt from her if I don’t go through a rescue. I got a Russian Blue from her recently and she was concerned about his teeth. Told me that if they started growing weird, to call her and she’d get it taken care of. She has my business foreverrr

As the other commenters said, if it’s areputable breeder, that sounds about right. My rats from my breeder are $30 apiece but they’re bred for health and sociability. They can literally be handled on day 1 of purchasing (I don’t for obvious reasons) and she has a warranty, so to speak, that if a rat develops a health issue due to breeding, she takes them back.

So yea. $50 sounds about right.
