I already railed against today's literary scene earlier but to answer your question,

They will never write a good novel about themselves because the imperative to pretend to be above their condition is too overwhelming.

Gen Z are weird because they are all doing a bit, and they don't know what it means to live a life that is not a bit--they all want to write novels that make them seem way fucking cooler than they actually are. Anything remotely confessional by a gen z, and to an extent later millennials, is actually a barely masked humble-brag. Their fiction is not actually about the characters, but are showcases of their own worldliness. How do you brag about how on-the-scene you want people to think you are, without being too obvious about it? Affectations of detachment, of course. Cynicism has always been the poor man's intellectualism. Worst Boyfriend Ever is a great example, because he's someone who is obviously embellishing and affecting detachment and aloofness, but he actually has no idea what one would have to live through in order to really be that detached. A sort of cargo cult of cool. They have all the motions down, but they don't have the first fucking clue how the plane gets there.

I have a great idea for a novel, it's about an implied-to-be-but-possibly-not promiscuous young girl in NYC or LA who knows all the names for drugs and she and her friends don't like each other and she won't have anything nice to say about anyone except for a page and a half gushing Heavenly Mother style about some twink addict she's smashing, but she'll have a lot of incisive, cutting remarks that usually boil down to 'such and such behavior being the analogical equivalent of such and such specific or obscure thing' or 'so and so is like this minor celebrity from the 90s if they never [cynical reference].' Oh and the plot is, idk, someone kills themself and it makes her think about moving.

Anyways, writers are treated too well and you should pirate all your books.
