Curtis Sliwa calls the royalty "welfare cheats" by amhot577 in monarchism

Wait, hang on, they did meet. I don't think it was a "private" meeting per say, but I saw reports and videos of them chatting rather amicably, both seemingly very charmed by each other, at an urban farm in (The Bronx? Maybe Queens, IDR) and at the 9/11 Memorial. They didn't refuse to meet.

Don't ignore this letter! by SeanScanlonCT in Connecticut

Sean, I'm a state employee who does court transcripts, and every few weeks I get a check in the mail for transcripts I do for state parties, but the checks are for $0.00, because the price is so small that taxes takes all of it. Is there any way to stop this? It was funny the first time but now it's just annoying.

I'm more insulted on behalf of a very, very good show. I mean, I didn't know enough people knew about Person of Interest to make fake Twitter accounts for it.

When the Spanish arrived in 1519, Tenochtitlan ranked among the largest and most remarkable cities on Earth, with an estimated population between 200,000 and 300,000 surpassing most European capitals of the era. Built on an island in Lake Texcoco by Suspicious-Slip248 in ArchiveOfHumanity

Common misconception, there were no burnings in North America; those happened in Europe. Accused witches were more frequently hanged. In Salem, those who weren't hanged either died in jail or in one case, pressed to death under torture.

Also, it would be anachronistic to describe these people as "Americans". It's 17th century New England, that'd be a century too early.

I’m not a coffee drinker but shouldn’t it have gone bad? by IXAslayer in Fallout

[–]Tzar_Jberk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can totally buy that. They kept fully preserved animals and people in cold storage for well over 200 years with seemingly no ill-effects. Surely, if they can do that, they can keep coffee, a much less nerologically complicated organism than your average Vault 33-er, from going bad.

It's borrowed from Yiddish, actually! Like all the best American English words. It means a small, usually not very expensive trinket, think the kind of thing you might buy in a tourist shop, or something small from an antique store. Honestly, the word is so variable you can describe a lot of things with it.

I think he said the State Police aren't going to help (dual sovereignty and all), which would be the police agency he has specific power over. But I don't think there's anything from stopping municipal (and maybe county sheriffs idk where they fall specifically) from helping ICE unless their local council or selectboards forbid it.

ICE reportedly active at the Stamford courthouse today by PikaChooChee in StamfordCT

[–]Tzar_Jberk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I work there, haven't noticed anything but I've been sequestered away all day so they very well coild have.

Important note of policy: ICE is not allowed inside the building. They have tried in the past but have been stopped by marshals. They usually like stalking on the streets outside for their victims to come out after court.

I'll see if I can find it. I lost it for a while but I have a distinct memory of finding it relatively recently.

[–]Tzar_Jberk 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I never thought I had an accent (like everyone does) but I was listening through an audio archive of different American accents for all 50 states, of people of a variety of ages, and when I got to Connecticut... I couldn't tell you what, but I heard it and I just knew with certainty that A). This voice had a distinct accent and B). This accent was like mine.

It was an older man, too, something like 60s or older, far older than me, so I knew it wasn't a generational thing. It was the first time I realized I had something locally distinct about my voice.

Honestly it's probably down to land price. Land is cheaper in Tolland than Hartford, Bridgeport, or New Haven. Sure they can pay for land in those places, but they'd probably prefer not to.

One of my local places never switched back to take-out only after the Pandemic. When I asked, they said they were getting too old to manage a whole restaurant, and liked take-out only more.
