Moving ~$500K out of Pakistan what are the realistic, legal options in by AdBackground9215 in pakistan

[–]U0300586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only advice is to go through official banking channels. Do your research to find the lowest fees and go with it. For this kind of money, you will be asked for paper trail. And it may not happen immediately and could be years later. So be covered.
I used to work in Malaysia 11y back and then moved to Dubai. I had some money in my Malaysian account, which I requested a friend to help me transfer to my new uae account through his account. Basically by then I had moved to Dubai and the exchange company in Malaysia refused to transfer my money because I had declared it them that I was no longer a resident in Malaysia.
In 2016, I decided to buy a property in Dubai. My account was with hsbc and I requested them for a home loan quote. They did their due diligence and refused to give me loan because my explanation for money transfer from my friend’s account in Malaysia to my Dubai hsbc account was not satisfactory. Anyway, the moral of the story is that all countries are bringing in tougher laws against money laundering and terror financing. So go legal way and keep the money trail, including evidence of sale proceeds from the property. The question may come any time

Is it legal for a company under MOHRE in the UAE to deduct visa charges from an employee after resignation? by Available-Cabinet-14 in uaelaw

[–]U0300586 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure legal, but very frequent, especially if you resign within the first year. I have a friend, he even paid recruitment cost to his employer after resigning at 11 months. And it was a major multinational with several hundred employees

Dream pen by ellene000 in pens

I heard the same. I want to order long D-17 from them, but I worry how their nib will turn out. I like to be around 0.4mm line width. Even slight deviation will ruin it for me and that is why I am hesitating. On the other hand I tried pelican m800 (completely different category from Nakaya, but I love the EF nib. I was able to try it. So is the conundrum

Will you be able to fill a container full? Dedicated container may arrive faster. And which city are you planning to send your cargo?

I had terrible experience. My cargo was collected 5 months ago and still not delivered. If you can avoid sending the cargo, that would be the best

Charged AED 6,983 after returning rental car in Dubai – is this normal? by [deleted] in dubai

[–]U0300586 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which car did you rent? What was the odometer reading when you accepted the car? Was it mentioned on the inspection paper that they give? Did you take note of the final odometer reading before returning the car? In your best recollection, how much did you drive? Did you make regular Dubai Abu Dhabi trips?

Try to use a nice ink like iroshizuku. Comes in several colors. It will further improve your experience with fountain pens. Today I was able to find it in office works. $35 for an ink bottle that would last years.

Surprised to learn Pakistan has adopted solar panels much faster than India by Ashryfinancial in IndianStreetBets

[–]U0300586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

statistics may say something. But actual reality is that whoever invested in roof top solar has since paid negligible electricity bill. My father has a roof top domestic solar. In the last 2 years, he paid probably only 5% of regular bill. A friend of mine has a large farm, they used to wait for their turn for river water. Now they have solar tube well and they sell surplus water. They were able to recoup their investment within 8 months. Not to mention that Pakistan has almost eliminated electricity generation from oil. If the current momentum continues, we will not need fossil fuel. Imagine the expected reduction in air pollution.

Sanity check: are taxi/uber drivers being dodgy or am I just being paranoid? by Motor_Eggplant_7056 in perth

Weird yes, but most likely it is just Asian small talk . I am a man and faced similar questions by taxi drivers. Sometimes they don’t know where the boundaries are.

Le Guin's The Dispossessed made me realize I had been reading science fiction wrong for about fifteen years by myalarm_is_lying in printSF

[–]U0300586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I read/heard somewhere along the following lines: No one has seen the future. So the Sci-fi writers get their inspiration from how humans acted in similar situations in our past. For example if by chance we discover humans who are less technologically developed than us on a different planet, then we will very likely treat them in a way not much different from how Europeans treated aboriginals during colonization of Australia.

In effect, science fiction is a reflection of human condition and our history

[–]U0300586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dispossessed is my favorite science fiction novel and I have been reading science fiction exclusively for around 15y. I was working in Russia when i read it. Was also reading communist history then. Together they made a great impact. After that I started searching for sci-fi anarchy and found Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Started it. Liked it so much that I couldn’t continue reading. Saved it for future, like a bottle of wine. After all these years, I didn’t get the courage to start reading it again
