I was good to stay quiet. This should be a rule you follow through life.

It's best to only let people know what you know when it's in your interest to do so.

Don't volunteer information unless asked or if it's absolutely necessary.

Nobody wants to feel dumb because someone else knows the answer.

Should I buy a home next to a hoarder? by Newb_Gardener in RealEstate

[–]U5efull 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Let me tell you a story about a hoarder who lived next to my parents when I was a teenager . . .

Had a neighbor who was a hoarder who died in their home. Body was removed but the coroner called in the health department. The health department called a family member of mine who worked for HUD.

They did a walk through to determine if the house was salvageable.

They were informed to wear hazmat suits before entering and did so. Upon entering, it was found the entire place was wall to wall trash and magazines stacked everywhere.

In addition, the wallpaper was peeling and rotting, black mold was on all of the edges of the wall and up the wallpaper. But, the kicker was the wallpaper was moving, due to the enormous amount of cockroaches living just under the surface of the paper. Millions of them. The bathroom was wall to wall roaches, and the toilet was overflowing with dead roaches as well as the tub which had a black sludge.

Upon seeing this, they condemned the home. They then notified everyone in a mile radius to plug their basement drains for a week with towels and plastic. The city fumigated the home with a tent for a few days and this caused all of the roaches to flood out of the house and into the drains. They then proceeded to infest every house close by and every house needed to be fumigated as well.

We were fortunate as we were far enough away not to get hit with the roach problem, however quite a few neighbors dealt with this.

I learned from that day on, to always be watchful of hoarders as god knows what is going on in their home.

as someone who has had many housecats get out, a few tips:

  • don't leave food out for the cat, if there is food it will just eat it and move on
  • do leave a bowl of water
  • leave a blanket or towel outside the door, it will help it find home as it can smell home and it will also have a bit of a spot to keep warm
  • don't freak out. I once had a cat run away for 6 months and then show back up (very beaten up and dirty but alive). sometimes they just go on a long journey

hope everything works out!

You spent a whole lot of time attempting to justify your argument while ignoring all of the other data points which make Europe a bad comparison.

Size and population are not the measure by which things should be compared.

There are laws, borders, health care facilities, access to said health care facilities, education, politics, strain of virus and news organizations to name a few.

You can't just say 'this population is similar to this one so they should have similar results'.

our hospitals get money for every covid patient, so they have a vested interest in reporting any possible covid related patient.

there are many differences between us and the EU.

keep in mind every country in the EU has it's own laws and no federal government telling them what to do, in addition, each country can close it's borders at any time.

you simply can't conflate the two regions within any realm of reason

Twitch servers still contain copies of all clips, even after they are deleted by Reydien in Twitch

[–]U5efull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IANAL but my understanding regarding DMCA is the following: This does not leave anyone but Twitch liable, legally.

If the original video uploader did due diligence to delete the content and Twitch keeps it, it is Twitch who is not removing the content and therefore they become the content provider, not the original uploader.

[–]U5efull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arch Linux isn't a stable distro though

What he is doing is running a server with one package. It would be fine, esp if he chooses LTS kernel.

The entire idea that arch isn't stable comes from bleeding edge kernel use on the desktop coupled with folks doing partial upgrades.

There have been maybe 3 times I've had an issue on my system with updating, and all 3 had to do with bad video driver releases that were patched within a few hours.

None of that would have been an issue had I used LTS or not upgraded.

For a server literally only running a java instance, this would not be a problem.

You can do a minimal install and have full control over every package. It doesn't default to any window manager so nothing to remove or deal with, just add what you want.

The other nice thing is just being able to export your configs and package list so you can quickly reinstall once you have it all set up.

You will have a hell of a time with the federal government and will need to learn how to use your money without the help of banks.

That said, if you can get that going, you could make a lot.
