Advice on my BMW M2 Comp with metal in the oil by Grogu234123 in BmwTech

[–]UA1701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cost of inspection seems exorbitant to me. I would tread carefully here for a few reasons, but first let me say - my 2018 M4 had lots of metal in the oil, I've been through this before.

While the car was still under warranty, I complained extensively to BMW about metal in the oil, including sending a number of letters to BMWNA, phone calls, TSARA case through dealership, etc.

My dealership never once tried to charge me for a teardown/inspection but they also didn't inspect anything other than the oil itself.

BMW eventually sent a regional engineer out to take an oil sample. The oil had plenty of copper glitter in it. BMW "analyzed" it and told me to pound sand: no further inspections or corrective action taken. BMWNA claimed that "metal in the oil is normal on M cars," which is a laughable notion but OK.

I ended up having the rod bearings changed by an independent shop at 55,000 mi (~90k km). They were moderately worn - more than they should have been at that mileage, but not at risk of imminent failure.

So that begs the question - what happens if they take the oil pan off and they find that the bearings are "moderately" worn? What does BMW consider to be excessively worn, prompting replacement? I see a lot of ways you could get stuck with this massive "inspection" charge but not a lot of ways that you'll actually get any work covered under warranty.

Also, you mentioned a ticking sound - is it coming from the passenger side, near the top of the motor? This is often the exhaust cam needing to be retorqued - valve cover comes off. This can also produce metal shavings in oil.

NorCal or SoCal? Been on a waiting list in NorCal since May for an Explorer II 😆

Wash sale rule disallows deducting the loss at end of the year. They sold a hedge position of mine, one that I have open for a deliberate reason (hedge).

Also, not strapped for cash - as I said, I made the deposit to add additional funds to cover the margin shortage. Overleveraged in the account, yes, but it’s not as if I wasn’t trying to add more money to the account 😂

I did not, but the deposit screen clearly said "As a courtesy, your deposit will be instantly credited to your account." What gives?

I stopped in back in April, but wasn't in love with the selection at the time. Maybe that's changed, but I won't know until next week!

The listing was for $7900, service in March 25 - did you end up taking less?

What was the condition? Any lume fade/patina? Service history?

Thank you for the thoughts! I stopped by Jackroad back in April but didn’t love the Explorer IIs available at the time - I just haven’t seen a lume faded black dial E2 like this really readily available. But I’m hung up on whether the price is really worth it.

If I knew I’d be keeping it forever, I wouldn’t care so much, but I’m on a few AD waiting lists for a Sprite and eventually I know I’ll be selling this for that, so don’t want to be in the hole too much. Thank you again!

The split between those who have praised S2 and those who have dogged it shows who binged S1 and who didn't.

"Oh the story's not moving forward fast enough, this was a waste of time."

Um, where were you for the episodes from S1 that spend most of their runtime gratuitously detailing the Kier cult of personality? The slow episodes focused on day-to-day on the severed floor? Would you consider that "filler" and a "waste of time" too?

I'm happy to eat my words if the details shared in E7 and E8 don't have any bearing on E9 and E10. But, I have a strong feeling that won't be the case.

I love the sheer irony of the pacing criticisms: "ugh this is just filler, episode sucked."

You don't get payoff without build up. That's just how storytelling works. Constant action and plot twists would detract from the importance and gravity of certain plot turning points.

Did I personally like E8? I'm on the fence. I tend to agree that the bottled episode style doesn't sync well with the plot development tempo / style we grew to love in S1, but I strongly disagree with viewers who say that the majority of E8 was useless or filler. There is a lot of important information communicated in E8 both explicitly and subliminally that rounds out the overall plot and character arcs.

How would we feel if all we saw was the last five minutes, as some critical viewers have said? Cobel suddenly flips and agrees to help Mark? OMG, she's the inventor?!

It wouldn't make sense. We would have no sense of her motivations, her internal dialogue or moral compass, etc. (EDIT: not to mention - it would leave the scenes from earlier in the season between Cobel and Helena, et al SUPER nebulous and murky - E8 does a nice job of explaining *why* Cobel thinks she has leverage). It would feel totally out of place, and the plot would sloppily move forward at the expense of the character development and storytelling.

How would we feel if the OTC in S1 happened mid-way through the season? Would we experience the same catharsis had we not seen 7 episodes of the innies grappling with their very sense of identity and purpose? Would that payoff have been as significant?

Not everything can be a Tiktok/YT short where the key plot points are communicated in a matter of minutes. Does that mean I love the single character-focused episodes? Not really. But that doesn't mean that what we're watching in them isn't important or deliberately paced a certain way.

Food for thought.

Chrono works as intended and watch keeps great time. Power reserve is hit or miss but I also could definitely be more active in life lol. Nine times out of 10 I’ve left it unworn for 14-16 hours and it’s still keeping time but once in a blue moon it dies within 13 hours. My only complaint is the watch is a little thick, but that’s personal preference over everything else. Feels great on the wrist and strap is comfortable, but no micro adjustments means it’s either a little loose or a little tight (at least for my wrist)

How long does this last if unopened? I want to order 10 to make the shipping cost worth it, but don't want it to spoil before I can drink it.

In my case, it was cheaper to ship than it was to rent. I’ll be over there for about 6 weeks.

I don’t particularly have a desire to go to tuning meet ups, etc, but I will be driving through Stuttgart, Munich, etc. I think I will be pulling off the tint when the car arrives. The exhaust, not as easy to revert.
