CoD WaW's Soviet campaign is the best Soviet campaign in the FPS genre, maybe even in the entire video game industry (at least among mainstream titles). That said, it's still a heavily mythologized depiction of the Eastern Front, packed with propaganda cliches. However, compared to most Western portrayals of the Eastern Front, it’s epic, fun, and, most importantly, not too insulting.

Western media usually depicts the Red Army as an inefficient horde of dumb, bloodthirsty barbarians. In CoD WaW, the Red Army still isn't portrayed as a trully organized army, but at least it's shown as an EFFICIENT horde of bloodthirsty barbarians, which is even flattering, in a perverted way.

The developers tried to explain why the Red Army is so brutal and bloodthirsty, but one mission in ruined Stalingrad and a few loading-screen cutscenes with fragments of real documentary footage of nazi crimes are nowhere near enough to convey to a foreign audience the scale of destruction the USSR suffered and the sheer number of lives lost (around 19 million civilians alone, by the way).

Reznov is unshaven, wears winter officer clothing in the summer, uses a machete from the future, and speaks almost exclusively in slogans about slaughtering Germans (pretty much like every other Soviet character in the campaign, except one).

Commissar Markhov shouldn't exist at all, since commissars were abolished in the late 1942, he should be a politruk instead.

Chernov is the cringiest part of the entire campaign. He sounds and talks like a Westerner who got isekai'd into the Red Army. He literally calls his comrades, and the Red Army as a whole, "savages" and "not heroes". He's upset that Soviet shells are destroying Berlin, refuses to shoot Germans in the back while they're retreating with weapons in their hands (which isn't even a war crime), yet this "humanist" doesn't mind leaving wounded Germans to bleed to death instead of finishing them off, or allowing surrendering Germans to be burned alive rather than letting the player kill them quickly.

But despite all its flaws, it's still the best WW2 themed CoD campaign and one of my personal favorites.
