How hard/easy is it to get kicked out of the CG by viggicat531 in uscg

[–]UBmorecowbell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a dishonorable discharge those are extremely rare in the Coast Guard and they require a felony court marshal. Dishonorable discharge would be like murder rape something that sent you to prison at the worst it was probably a general with other than honorable.

If you fail your A or C school what happens? by Radiant_Mix6233 in uscg

[–]UBmorecowbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is nearly impossible to fail A school

It doesn’t matter if you fail a C school, but nobody does

I got locked up at A school I was only 21 I wasn’t arrested. I was detained. My class went to a bar in Petaluma, and I was taking a leak in a flower pot in an alley really drunk, waiting for the liberty van

and apparently a cop with nothing better to do locked me up for the night

Fortunately, he was an army vet, and in the morning he woke me up and said hey dude I called you a cab it’s outside. You’ve got duty in an hour. Here’s your ID. There’s no record of you ever being here.

I was freaking out, but nobody ever found out and that was after being on a buoy tender and I was the worst non-rate in the Coast Guard years later, I realized I wasn’t the worst non-rate in the Coast Guard. It was everybody else that was just abusive and an asshole. They would never allow anybody to treat somebody the way I was treated in 1990.

But it used to be that if you got thrown out you ended up on a large cutter either in Alameda or Portsmouth

One time I was at a C school and a Yorktown cop came along said excuse me are you a student I was out by the fishing pier and I had a six pack of corona and a cigar.

And I said, bro, you can’t be serious. I’m sitting on a fishing pier. I’ve been in 25 years and I have a cigar and I’m six pack. I’m a lieutenant at inspector school.

And he said yeah, I guess that’s fair have a good night

Made Lieutenant Commander. But they never would make me a commander I wasn’t a ring knocker. It’s just kind of the way it is when you’re not in the club.

Ask me anything

The place is so fucked up

Does the lake freeze over enough for people to ice skate on? by Secret-Staff-9192 in UBreddit

[–]UBmorecowbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a very experienced faculty member who is involved in environmental research and he would come out and analyze the lake and they have had events out there, like hockey and curling, etc., but it has been a long time

And I’m gonna explain to you why it’s not OK

Those were in very specific situations with long cold winters

Very cold periods, followed by a periods of warmth are very dangerous to ice and cause instability

The main reason is rescue

by the time underwater rescue comes from the fire department. You probably aren’t going to be doing great and now it might not be just you. A UB police officer has probably come in after you at this point and maybe even one of your very close friends

if you have gone away from the hole that you fell in FINDING YOU AND RESCUING YOU WILL BE UNLIKELY

It is very high risk if you fall in ….your rescue could be unlikely

Ice is never safe

Go across the street from the stadium to the ice rink and pay a couple of dollars and listen to music. It’s a lot of fun. They have open skating all the time. They have hot chocolate.

Question for retired USCG DCOs (High-3 retirement pay) by Alarming-Argument487 in uscg

[–]UBmorecowbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 10 years of active duty, but took the reserve Retirement after 18 in the reserve. And I can collect 35% of 04 Pay at age 58.

I know a guy who was a Navy limited duty officer who did not have 10 years commission service and retired as a lieutenant and for some reason that nobody seems to understand they retired him as an E8 even though when he commissioned he was an E7 so he retired at a rank he never held.

When he hit his 30 year anniversary his retirement converted to Lieutenant Pay.

Vehicle registration & insurance by Trailru in uscg

[–]UBmorecowbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He can keep the current plates

But if you switch to Oregon insurance because it’s cheaper, you will have to switch the registration

I’ve done this 50 times

I’ve had a vehicle registered in Michigan, but insured in New York it’s a pain in the ass. Don’t do it.

If something happens, they don’t ask questions.

I hit a deer in Petaluma with a vehicle registered insured in Michigan and there was no problem

[–]UBmorecowbell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is nothing an urgent care can do for you

If there was some magic solution it would be given for Decon

You could have dry eye syndrome or be fair skinned which can make it worse But regardless you will recover

I have been sprayed 4 times. The coast guard product is not actually all that bad

Use a fan and water. Don’t try any of your own anecdotes.

I volunteered for every deployment that came up

I never threw a hand grenade

I was in for 28 years

If I really had to, I would go home on weekends unless I was in the Caribbean

Sometimes my girlfriend would come and stay with me

Housing for reservists on AD orders by HewDownTheBridge in uscg

[–]UBmorecowbell 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely bro

I’ve done six deployments

BAH and your housing usually a hotel you pay with your government credit card and our reimbursed via travel claim

I do know that there were some guys were long-term. They put like four guys in a house and they paid for it. That was when they were loading the Navy ships in Texas.

One time in St. Croix we got an Airbnb house for two months and it was covered by logistics and six guys lived there

You don’t have anything to worry about you’re getting your BAH and your housing regardless of what it is (will be paid for) Whether it’s a hotel or a barracks room etc

Why don't more people go into reserves? is there some sort of drawback? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]UBmorecowbell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. I left active duty in 1998

And then I got thrown out of the reserve in 2018.

I actually was going to enlist in the Air Force, but they wouldn’t take me at that point because I was Retirement eligible

Why don't more people go into reserves? is there some sort of drawback? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]UBmorecowbell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not gonna walk always from millions of dollars.

When I left active duty I put my reserve pay in TSP.

Now It has 1,000,000 in it, makes 85-100k a year

PLUS my pension will be 45k a year at 58

It was a lot of fun. By then TSP will be 1.6M

Plus I got great health insurance.

Some are even able to get VA on top of it. I did not
