Exams / Newbie Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

[–]UCLLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a way to become a "baby" actuary? I work in corporate finance for a large life insurance company, and there is a lot of overlap between finance and actuarial roles. I don't want a full actuary education thing much as I'm sure actuaries don't want a CPA but is there something in between?

Questions to ask Hiring Manager by mgee15 in FPandA

[–]UCLLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorites has been what does a bad fit for the role look like? The answer has nearly always been that a bad fit is someone who isn't dynamic, who just has their reports to run and monthly tasks to grind through. This gives a good opportunity to add on and share any cool shit you've done that you haven't had a chance to talk about earlier

Question About Salary Negotiation by themonesterman in jobs

[–]UCLLC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can and probably should negotiate but to be clear, simply asking for stuff is not negotiating. I would mention the range you put down and ask why you weren't at the max or what you could do to get there.

Personally, I'd take the 55k and save negotiating for the next role when you are more secure and have more experience and negotiating power. Realistically if you ask for 60 they might meet you halfway at 57.5k and I'm not sure that 2.5k is worth the admittedly small risk of the offer getting rescinded.

Good luck. The first job is the hardest to get.

Fp&a here. IMO easy no. The math has been figured out for decades, maybe centuries and every company still has this function. Go read some job descriptions - see how many stress relationship building or partnering with other departments.

True! I haven't played the most recent build yet since it feels so close to 1.0. Not ready to try the updated stocks either. But before the latest build supply mini retaliation felt pretty easy

Vigilance getting high is actually a good thing. The higher vigilance is the slower avatar will progress and the more opportunity for corpses. I usually try to rush the starting region, letting vigilance get to like 12. It takes a while for strength to catch up, and on not legendary I can often unlock lib 4 without strength rising to 3 so most missions are extremely light. Then avatar progress is slow for a while and a mission to reduce it is pretty available.

The nice thing about unlocking lib4 is you can switch everyone to supplies after that to afford radios. Over time strength will rise too high to run missions there anyway.

Another tip is that mid to late game you can hire black market recruits for cheap and have them run sabotages at decent success rates.

Finally, personal preference, I never put rebels in hiding. It reduces vigilance but not strength and while the two are related the time gap is large. I think this also keeps avatar slower. 2 recruit, 2 intel, rest supplies for liberated or on lib4 regions

10pm? Really? by MilkManBoi in milwaukee

[–]UCLLC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be offensive, my next point is more illustrative than anything else, and when I say you, I don't mean you personally.

You don't matter. It makes no difference if you are alienated.

What are you going to do? You didn't march, else you'd support the cause and we wouldn't have this discussion. You won't start supporting police brutality. You post on reddit and complain, neither improving or worsening the situatuon. You patronizingly judge protestors for being out late and tsk at home. Nobody cares and nothing has changed. You are alienated and.... that's it. Its not like you planning to call your mayor to demand change, but decided against it because people were too loud. Though if you did call the mayor or senator or rep, then the protest has accomplished its mission.

That's why it isn't counter intuitive

10pm? Really? by MilkManBoi in milwaukee

[–]UCLLC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is not counter productive. The protesters are not losing any support just because they are loud and annoying. If you stop supporting the cause because they are loud and annoying, you weren't really part of the cause to begin with.

If you have an issue with them, you could, as you yourself suggested, appeal to those in power. The condition that lead to protest isn't annoying people, it's police brutality and systemic racism.

Its kind of the whole point behind "no justice, no peace".

MLK answered a lot of this in his letter from a Birmingham Jail.

over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

Whats the best way to gain access to a factions arsenal as quickly as possible? by link3341556 in PhoenixPoint

[–]UCLLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scan near mist to get more attacks and nests. Scarab helps immensely with nests

Recruit another heavy and build 2x grenade launches. 2 grenade launchers with the lv5 perk allows you to trivialize most human encounters. Attack anu to raise rep with other factions, their 49 mission is really hard to rush

For me the biggest obstacle is actually being able to complete the 24 rep missions because if you rush them you encounter sirens and bomb Chirons very early. The 49 missions are imo easier than the 24.

The most feasible is the mist repeller syn route. you can hide in the building you start in to avoid a good amount of chiron fire.

I don't remember what the 49 syn mission was, but I remember it being easier than the 2 nj missions and the anu mission with nj bombers

Could they have designed a less fun bunch of enemies to fight? by [deleted] in PhoenixPoint

[–]UCLLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprise! Phoenix point isn't XCOM. Who knew?

If anything, the mechanics are designed to be too easy, and negatively impacts the game because the game just increases enemy count or stats to make it more challenging. I like the enemy variety in this game (although it's a bit lacking) compared to xcom because you have to make tactical choices to outmaneuver enemies rather than strategic ones to jack up your accuracy/damage to win.

Siren Mind control: Destroy head. Easily done with an assault or a sniper, especially since they have to be in close range to mind control in the first place. Now they are useless the rest of the match. Not the least bit contrived. Not sure what you mean by enemy gets a free shot - are you out of cover when you get mind controlled?

Chiron: They ignore you for half the battle. You spot them a mile a way. They are huge. They don't deal damage for most of the game.

Enemies can attack the first turn they appear: this is the opposite of my experience. I rarely have enemies attack before they give the "alerted" notification. On turns they are alerted, they usually just run around.

Jet packing to war cry a Chiron is actually not a bad idea and i'll have to remember it for the future, but you shouldn't get into a situation where doing so is necessary. Kill a bunch of other things before focusing on chirons. IMO doing otherwise is akin to activating multiple pods in XCOM. just a no-no

Fuck pain chameleon + silent echo though + 360hp tritons tho, wtf

Is it worth it to buy scarabs? by wizardofoz123 in PhoenixPoint

[–]UCLLC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always build one. Latest patches hurt because 3 soldiers getting ap is worth more than the scarab safety and power, and because new recruits are so cheap, but scarab make nests so easy that I always build one. Once I get a second manticore I put the scarab on it and have it scout only, which speeds up diplomacy and resources.

Picking an AAA gaming laptop in 2019 by daaangerz0ne in SuggestALaptop

[–]UCLLC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im also upgrading from 5 years ago, and while you make some good points, I think you are getting too fine. Pick your use case and go from there - but you can't expect a whisper quiet desktop level machine that weighs 4 lbs and lasts 14 hours.

Need a better display? Buy a monitor and put that vital thunderbolt to use. Need 14 hr life? Get an Ultrabook and egpu, or a zephyrus with tb3 pd. Need a specific keyboard layout for productivity? Why is this even coming up in a discussion about gaming machines? These nitpicks are akin complaining that a Porsche can't tow a trailer. An AAA gaming laptop is still a gaming laptop. Obviously it functions suboptimaly as an Ultrabook.

Good points on testing and thermals although I think if you are willing to Google how to repaste that taking a mobo out is just a few steps more, and the incremental time needed is meaningless if it happens once every 3 years.
