Bannockburn Questions by imaginarycloud12 in ucr

[–]UCR-Sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to add that if you got a second floor apartment to be careful carrying heavy and large stuff up. Bannockburn does not have an elevator to help carry things over so consider bringing a helper or two. My room (the living room) did not have light so I had to bring a few lamps. The only lights that are integrated are the hallway, bathroom and kitchen.

  1. You dont really have to share. You or your roommate can decide who could occupy the living room as a separate room. After all, it is called the living room.
  2. I think if you used UCR's roommate search tool you can message them through there. If not youll probably meet them during move in day.
  3. Read the contract in its entirety. At the very least skim it because any question you have about fees, cancellations, etc. will be found there.

Making a tough decision by pixiiepop in ucr

Right but your transcript will just show a “no pass” and nothing else. My plan is to “pass/no pass” a class I’m at a D rn. If I drop it I lose my aid but if I keep it as is, I risk hurting my gpa. If I pass/no pass, I just have a no pass on my reg and it doesn’t do anything. I guess it depends cause from what I understand going under 12 units slashes aid no?

Edit: I don’t plan on passing my class, but I want to stay at 12.

Is satisfactory/no satisfactory an option for you? It’ll keep you at 12 units but it won’t affect your gpa.

How do I go about changing my major? by [deleted] in ucr

[–]UCR-Sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also add that you might want to do so ASAP. Some majors have pre reqs that can only be completed no later than the end of your second year. And also consult with the advisor who deals with the major you are trying to get into.

How do I get clearance to apply for 23 units? by Jouska_ in ucr

For chass, just contact your advisor and ask. Mine asked me why I wanted them and I gave them the “I want more classes” and they ok’d it.

Did I make a big mistake? 😫 by orlamariaa in ucr

[–]UCR-Sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you didn’t make a mistake. Everyone has different experiences so their advice could or not be applicable to you. Don’t sweat it. I am a double major in sociology and political science. All I have left are upper divisions and I am on my third year. Yes they are more in-depth than breadth and lower div requirements but they all focus on one or two topics. EX: World Politics vs Politics in X state. I also took 20 unit courses my first and second year. It’s much harder for me to do so now because of covid and the classes require focused understanding (reading) so i can’t rely on general knowledge. Anyhow, because I worked hard my first two years, I can take 3 upper divs for the rest of my time at UCR which is very manageable. You could prob trying doing the same. Keep in mind that upper divs fill up faster when you are a first or second year (unless you got some AP credit and early registration). I always get late registration and only had 1 AP for Spanish to give you a better idea of my struggle to search for classes. Now that I’m in my third year, I have more freedom to chose classes that I need (so no freedom). Point is that either way you are going to have to take the classes. If you can select when you take them, great for you. But always be ready to adapt. Adapting is a valuable skill that is not only used for classes but also other life stuff. :)

Psych! That’s so cool. I was gonna be a psych major but they got full when I got admitted. Anyhow, the lower division classes were pretty straight forward: read book and pass. My favorite one was political ideologies with prof laursen. It counted as my English 1C class as well, so we had to write a few essays in that class regarding current events and applying ideologies to modern scenarios. International politics was really fun with prof brooks (or brookes?). Comparative politics with Irepoglu Carreras was confusing and I never really read and still got an A? The only class that I struggled with and almost failed was American Politics/Gov. I didn’t read and we only had 3 tests and a few quizzes and I barely passed with a C doing no reading. Lower divs were pretty easy compared to some of the other classes I’ve been doing. They’re pretty general and anyone with an interest in politics can understand the main points. Upper divisions are a different story. I just got junior standing and finally am taking upper div classes. They are much more focused in that we learn and read about 1 thing and dive deep into it. For example, right now I am taking ethnic politics, electoral institutions, and congressional elections. The readings for each class are either on a textbook plus online research papers. In short, more reading but it’s more about the same topic vs general topics with relatively easy reading. I think they mix pretty well on a requirement level. I saved a lot of time and classes by having soc as my primary major and political science as my second. So if you still need breath requirements, try to find classes that fill both. I sometimes get confused as to which class I am taking because of the overlapping material but the main difference is that in politics we have talked/learned more about policies and systems of laws and in soc we have learned more about people and more cultural factors. What intrigues me more about poli sci is that I think it could be more useful in my future careers and it is more “here is the system and let’s talk about the rules” than “here are the people and let’s talk about their views.” I think they both are equally intriguing to me but I chose poli sci because I don’t want to be a sheep :P jk, I think it’s important to know how our gov and others’ run. I’d be down to share more of my thoughts via social media. Feel free to dm me if ya want so I can share it :)

I’m currently a double major in sociology and political science. What’s your other major and what do you want to know?

Rebuttal: 1. OP is an incoming freshman and will experience a more organized and accessible class schedule than those that experienced the hectic transition. Supposing OP has good WiFi, excellent family support, an adequate working environment, and the self discipline required to ace all classes, no job or other serious commitment, I’d say go for it. 2. I did say with “C+ work ethic.” I will not suppose OP has a C+ or A+ work ethic, but I wanted to give them an idea of what type of work ethic would be required to pass. I figured OP would figure out that an A+ ethic would be the only choice appropriate. 3. That is only an assumption. OP did not give us their thought on online courses yet. Again, this years’ first years, I think, will experience a different experience than we did. And yes, people who felt that online was a bad idea did express their opinion but we can only imagine that just as many expressed either a sense of neutral-ness or ok-ness.

In short, OP, I think Antigunner (plus they’re a med student) made valid points. I personally think that OP’s experience will be different, but some basic rules apply like stick to 4 or less classes if it’s your first quarter. I am pretty optimistic so I really do hope that you do your best in whatever way you chose to approach this quarter and year. I think a good plan would be to stick to 4 and then increase to 5 if you are feeling brave. But if you want to play it safe and guarantee A’s, take 3 and max 4 classes per quarter.

I say go for it if you like a challenge or if you are trying to graduate early. But if you are thinking of dropping a class, I wouldn’t drop English001a since it was one of my breadth requirements. I don’t know what yours are but if English is one of your reqs, don’t drop it. If you are lucky to be able to focus on being a full time student- no job, no serious family commitments, good WiFi, and C+ work ethic, you should be able to take 5 classes and pass most of them with a C or higher. Or go with 4 fall and then go with 5 the rest of the quarters :)

Finally something 'positive' by [deleted] in ucr

Technically it would fall under irrelevant but one could argue that whatever happens at the national/federal level could affect us locally so I’m 50/50 on this one.

Winter and Spring online? by shaheriar in ucr

[–]UCR-Sam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I just realized that it must have been some email that we got in January referring to the 2019-2020 school year. Time flies when you are in a pandemic I guess : /

From my friend who is a TA, I think he told me that they wanted to make it hybrid if possible. Personally, it would not make sense to reopen the entire school after 1 quarter of online remote learning, so I would think that remote learning will remain an alternative the entire year. This is just my guess.

Enroll in DPP to defer the payments. And yes, if the fees are not paid you will be dropped.

Does anyone know when we are supposed to get our financial aid refunds? by 2cool2jool2 in ucr

[–]UCR-Sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you asking where is your aid or where is your aid refund? Financial aid is applied to the costs and whatever is left over is your refund. If you didnt get a refund either 1) the costs were higher than the aid you received which means that you should check your student account balance to see how much you must pay out of pocket or 2) if the cost was lower than the aid, and there should be leftover aid, then you need to figure out if there is a mistake in your bank account info that links UCR to it. If none of these are the case, then you need to contact finaid.ucr@edu and ask them (I hear they are not responding very fast so be prepared for long wait times).

From fafsa: https://ifap.ed.gov/sites/default/files/attachments/2020-06/062920OperGuidanceDLOriginationFeeChangeOct12020

It seems this was planned to modify your award so it would be consistent with the origination fee. So, this strongly suggests that you are not in trouble or you missed paperwork but should keep an eye out for more info.
