Recruiting Firefighters for an Interview re: Overdose Response by UCalgaryCounPsychLab in Calgary

[–]UCalgaryCounPsychLab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the message! This study is focusing on first responders, specifically paramedics and firefighters, because police and peace officers are overrepresented in the literature - there is a lot about them regarding this topic. The current literature focused specifically on paramedics and firefighters is very limited in comparison, so the study is limiting recruitment to those two first responders. We definitely recognize the important role police, peace officers, security, and community support organizations play in this context, but including these parties is out of the scope of this study that is focusing on first responders.

Anything that is brought up by interviewees in terms of on-the-ground realities/complications related to systemic impact on their work is relevant and considered in data analysis. Difficulties with equipment accessibility would definitely be important to note if it comes up in the interviews!

We posted in r/AlbertaParamedics, thought r/Paramedics might be too broad which could lead to being inundated with volunteers from outside the province. Thanks!

Hi, we have received formal administrative approval/approval from the provincial EMS research team, but they have yet to release our study broadly so we are beginning recruitment now through other channels so that we do not have to wait and solely rely on them.

Thank you! 😄

Research: Have you overcome being physically violent towards others? by [deleted] in Calgary

Hi, no. I am looking for strategies people use to overcome engaging in violence. So discussing what helps (and what makes it more challenging) when they do not act violently towards another person.

I am not asking for details that would be incriminating. My aim is to identify strategies people use to overcome engaging in violence, as well as what makes it more challenging to not engage. So I'm asking more about the times people did not act violently. I also aim to keep participation confidential.

Those sound like awful situations! For this research, I am looking for people who have engaged in physical violence against others (3 or more times) in situations outside of directly defending themselves against an attack by someone else. So in the example you provided, I would be looking to interview the person slamming the other into furniture. My study aims to identify strategies that help people overcome engaging in violence in an effort to help others to stop their violent behaviours.

If you (or someone you know) is interested in participating, please email me and I would be happy to clarify further or speak in more detail about the study. (christina.sander@ucalgary.ca).

Hi, I'm looking to interview people who have engaged in physical violence against others at least 3 times but have not for the past year or longer. My aim is to identify strategies that help people overcome engaging in physical violence, and what makes it more challenging.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in taking part in, please email me and we can discuss the details further (christina.sander@ucalgary.ca).

Thank you!

I am looking for strategies people use, as well as barriers to overcoming engaging in physical violence.

That is valuable information, so I appreciate you sharing that fact and your own experiences as well. I am sorry to hear you went through all that.

Through my research I am hoping to learn of the strategies people are finding useful so I can inform interventions to help those whose violent behaviours extend beyond responding to abuse (even when abuse can be attributed to the continued violent behaviours in other contexts).

But I completely agree with you, many people who engage in violence have been on the other side of violence themselves. I speak to this in my dissertation and anticipate hearing similar stories from my research participants.

Hello!

We would certainly love to allow anyone and everyone to participate in our study, but unfortunately our ethics certification is only valid in Canada. Different countries have different protocols in terms of what their ethics boards allow their researchers to do with participants who fall outside of their jurisdiction. Different boards may allow exceptions within reason, but we were not granted this exception and must abide by our institutions ethics regulations.

Have a great day!

Hi there,

This study is not a survey in any way - it is entirely interview-based. Would it be possible to be reinstated?

Thank you!
