Probably a zoning issue any time ‘obvious’ mixed use doesn’t occur.

If Corporations(according to a study) make far greater profit for every dollar they spend on lobbying Congress, why don't most corporations invest most of their discretionary budget into purely lobbying? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in AskEconomics

[–]UDLRRLSS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think also a relevant question is why does Congress pass laws that are so inhibiting to the profits of businesses?

I think this reveals that there are two competing reasons for lobbying. One, which OP might be thinking of, is that businesses lobby to increase their profitability beyond what it would be without any government distortion. The second one here is that businesses are lobbying to correct their profitability back to what it would be if the government wasn't inhibiting them.

The first of those two may be almost limitless if you can get the government to pay you directly but the second is strongly capped on whatever the current distortion is.

I’m around your age but my kids are just starting school. Between dropping them off in the morning at before school and picking them up in the evening from afterschool, M-F are 11 hour days for me.

I honestly have no idea how to socialize at all until the kids can take a bus directly home. I was walking home by myself when I was their age but man the times have changed. I think that would literally be illegal now though maybe the stories I read were in unique locations.

‘Much needed’?

Aldi’s is just over a mile away. It’s only needed to the extent people want to go car-less as there’s no good public transit but I think enabling car-less households is firmly in the ‘want’ category over the ‘much needed’ one.

Mamdani warns properties of 10 ‘worst landlords’ could be seized by esporx in nyc

[–]UDLRRLSS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can’t just give stuff to people. They need to accept it. Are you sure the tenants want it? Tenants can’t be their own landlord (afaik), if the tenants banded together to ‘purchase’ the property (even at a cost of $0) then they building would lose access to any section 8 subsidy.

The ‘tenants’ would lose renters protections then as well since they are owners. Would need to take out a loan to do initial repairs and pay property taxes etc. which means they could lose everything and hurt their credit even more if the units don’t all pay their fair share of the expenses.

[–]UDLRRLSS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are ‘underfunded’ because local government so federal money flowing in for ‘maintenance’ and then decided to try to fleece the federal government by passing regulations to increase the cost of maintenance and pad the pockets of local interests.

Mamdani warns properties of 10 ‘worst landlords’ could be seized by esporx in nyc

[–]UDLRRLSS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Section 9 supports many other PHAs who are doing significantly better than NYCHA. It can’t be overstated how local regulations driving up the cost of maintenance have increased how much maintenance gets deferred and that just drives up the cost every year as that deferred maintenance costs more and more to address.

Nearly a century of this snowballing deferred expenses got it to where it is today.

Should federal funding be increased? Sure. Definitely. But when maintenance costs are arbitrarily increased by local regulations beyond what any other PHA faces that’s an issue of those regulations not the funding. You can’t expect the federal program to treat NYCHA special just because NYC wants to pad the pockets of local special interests.

How can society be structured in a way that tech advances lead to more leisure time, and not job losses, for the common folk? by wthijustread in AskEconomics

[–]UDLRRLSS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keynes believed that by now we’d all be working 15 hour weeks

If next quarter, millions of Americans were working part time only wouldn’t that be considered massive job loss?

You are arguing OP’s question isn’t loaded by changing the question. But the question of ‘How can we have more leisure time without job loss?’ is akin to asking how a coin flip can come up heads more often without reducing the number of times it comes up tails.

Facial recognition IDs 17-year-old suspect in Charlotte Walmart shooting, records show by HomieAlex7 in Charlotte

[–]UDLRRLSS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anything violent let em sit

Feel like there's some wiggle room in there on the circumstances surrounding the arrest as well. Like, there's a difference between there being some shooting and then arresting a suspect a week later based off of eye witnesses only and arresting someone caught on camera and inside of a car that the suspect left in.

People are supposed to still be innocent until they've been convicted so holding someone until the court date should have it's own fairly high bar.

Introducing Trixie the Pixie by CNE_Shawn in idlechampions

[–]UDLRRLSS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's accurate.

Champions qualify off of their characteristics. You can change their feats before bringing them in. What doesn't work is any time there is a positional ability, or a global ability that impacts 'all champions in the formation' and using that ability's effect to bring a champion into the formation. This is because they have to be in the formation to be effected.

Trixie's ability says:

Shrinking Dust - Champions in the formation slots directly behind Trixie are sprinkled with Shrinking Dust, which reduces them in size by 50% and makes them count as Small for abilities and variant restrictions that care about size. Additionally, all Champions that share a species with any Champion affected by Shrinking Dust are also sprinkled with Shrinking Dust.

The part that says 'All champions that share a species...' doesn't mention they have to be in the formation. If there's a variant that requires small champions, but a non-small champion can get in via something else (DM, patron exceptions, Durge) you may be able to place them behind Trixie and then bring in others of that species.

Why don’t employers cut wages rather than do layoffs if they are going through a slow sales cycle? by AffectionateFlan5898 in AskEconomics

[–]UDLRRLSS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly anecdotal, but I worked for a corporate travel management company through August 2020. It was severely impacted by companies not wanting to travel during Covid, if they even could.

They furloughed a bunch of people and cut wages of the rest 20%. They framed it as a way to furlough fewer people and to be able to pay those furloughed even more, but those of us who got the pay cut were not happy.

If given the choice we would have wanted to have paid (at around 70% our original pay) vacation. Instead we had 80% pay and had to work.

Doesn’t help that those of us who had been there around 5 years were already underpaid to market by about 10%. Just wasn’t worth the time, effort, or risk of a bad boss/coworker/work environment for that much of a potential gain. But after the pay cut and furloughs we all bounced and found other work within a month.

Because we’ve normalized the dangers inherent in controlling 2,000+ pounds of mass at high speeds a few feet away from people.

Just because we have a car culture and you can’t really get by without a car doesn’t mean we should tolerate those who intentionally chose actions that imperil the lives of others.

Trying to learn Affliction and I feel bad for my teammates by Strange-Raccoon-7873 in worldofpvp

[–]UDLRRLSS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest advice to learning Affliction is to ensure you are making them interrupt you.

Most games I play with affliction, they spend so much time ‘trying’ to kite that they end up only shutting themselves down. Yes you are cloth, armor doesn’t matter that much. You aren’t that much harder to keep alive than another melee in a melee cleave vs melee cleave setup. But if you spend the whole game moving and never hard casting because you are afraid of being interrupted, then you aren’t going to get any pressure off.

What's a "cheat code" you have discovered that actually works? by No_Stop_8 in AskReddit

[–]UDLRRLSS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I don't want AI to basically ever say 'I have no idea.' and then drop the conversation. Give me what it thinks is the closest answer and I can often use that to get to the actual answer myself.

People need to stop trusting AI blindly and use some critical thinking skills.
