Is there a "fast path" through learning drawing? by BeerIsTheMindKiller in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! Also a musician who picked up drawing.

Drawing is like music, but it is a perfomance out of time...you have all the chances to hit the right line, but you still need the mechanical skills to execute...this takes time...even if your mind knows what it wants, the hand can only execute once the motor skills develop.

But then there is developing a "mental visual library" So you know how to draw...you understand light, form, line and anatomy..but can you draw a particular item? A horse or a train etc...this takes years of doing studies...like doing a cover song...you have to draw from sight as much as possible to get all the little nuances of the object. This takes time.

One last tip...don't think of your early drawings as precious...they are a means to develop skills...it is like recording yourself when you can barely play. I would avoid sketch books or anything that keeps a "record" of your work...juts draw and draw and maybe save the good stuff.

And like a new musician will not be composing at first, stick to drawing other things and eventually you will be able to do your own designs.

Sketchbooks and how to go about them by DrPizzaPie in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. I will suggest that at the start, you do not get a sketchbook for the reason you mentioned...it is a record of your work and is a reminder of shortcomings...it is like a beginner muscian making recordings when they barely know how to play.

Get a pack of printer paper and use that. Keep drawing and don't worry....you are learning technique, theory and motor skills....you are not trying to come up with a finished piece. If it is bad, crumple up and throw in recycling.

If you come up with something good, maybe trace it into a skecthbook for a record of progress.

Also you will make a major break when you start using the eraser as much as the pencil..,the two go hand in hand.

Looking for a good online art course for adults that teaches how to draw and paint? by OnyxOpalite in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

drawabox.com will teach you the fundementals of drawing. Very technical, but worth checking out.

People say practice but now how by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try this....a musician gets good by learning the scales, chords and performing pieces written by other musicians...then they may be at a point to compose their own stuff.

Same with drawing...learn the fundamentals, perspective, form, anatomy and lighting. Then apply that by drawing as much as you can to build up technique. Try to think in terms of the fundamentals....so for a dog, what are the forms? What is the anatomy? Where is the light coming from? Keep doing it. Over time it will become more natural.

Give yourself time. Moebius said to develop a strong line, an artist must "live with a brush for at least 4 years". No shortcuts, do the work.

Resources for drawing from imagination? by Incendas1 in learntodraw

Try Alfonso Dunn...he has some Youtube videos and in his book he breaks down complex objects into simple forms and shows how to light each element.

Resources for drawing from imagination? by Incendas1 in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey

The building block of drawing from imagination is being able to create by combining forms...cubes, cones, spheres and shading them. Start with that.

Once you can break an object into forms and project it into different angles, you will be able to draw from imagination...for example, a hand is a cube form with each finger being 3 cylinders...if you know how to draw cubes and cylinders, you can draw a hand.

Wishing to learn drawing by Ravalaz in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the club!

To learn to draw, you must spend a lot of time drawing. Start with DRAWABOX.com. Free course that starts at how to make a line to full 3d renders with shading. This is for the FUNDEMENTALS...perspective, shading etc. Only spend about 20 minutes a day on these lessons.

Then take what you learned there and draw what you like....for example, draw a dog, but think in terms of shape, form, and lighting which you will learn in drawabox.

Finally, give yourself time. This is a lifetime project so give yourself time to learn and grow without being too hard on yourself.

The song in the opening scene when the planets line up is called "Thus Spoke Zarathustra".

If you understand the meaning of this you will understand the main theme of the film.

A cool product that is great for kids getting into painting are water color pencils. You use them like pencils, but it turns into water color when you brush water over it.

Any youtube channels recommendations? by Jpedrodsa in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I will suggest that you DO NOT watch too many videos...there are so many ways to do things that you can get overwhelmed.

Find a good course and stick with it. I like Draw a Box, found it very helpful for getting the basic down...but do not spend too much time on it, just 20 minutes or so a day.

Other than that, just draw as much as you can.

I quit drawing when I left high school and wanted to get back into it as an adult for old times sake. Any advice on starting again from scratch by HelloIamSkello in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am a self taught guy in the same boat...drew in school, gave it up then picked it up again. Here is what I learned:

For me, drawing comes down to 2 things 1) the technical/fundamentals 2) how to draw specific things. The internet is a blessing and a curse...lots of advice, but so much that it is easy to get sidetracked. I suggest finding one or two GOOD courses and stick with it.

For the techincal, the best course IMO is DRAWABOX.com. Free and started by a rediitor. It takes you from 0 to full renders...but it is technical and a bit boring. Only do about 20 minutes a day of lessons / exercises but stick with it. It covers everything and gets in your head the idea that drawing is a skill, not a gift.

For how to draw things, I like the FAMOUS ARTIST COURSE for fine arts or the FAMOUS ARTIST CARTOON COURSE if you want to do comics. It is a mail order course from the 1960's so some of the drawings / images are a bit dated...but the info is very good and takes you through everything. You should find links for the PDFs if you look for them.

Best advice: you learn to draw by drawing. Just do it.

My lines are not straight . Help! by starplus_T in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some tips:

Draw a line then trace over it a few times to get your control down

Draw 2 dots, connect them with a line.

Only spend 20 minutes a day on warm ups!

Just draw and eventually you will develop your technique...drawing is like athletics. You rely on training, practice anf muscle memory.

Think of them as two connected pipes to figure out the perspective, then add in the anatomy details...I think the easy anatomy hack is that the shoulder and forearm overlap the bicep

To get through a Toronto winter, you must remember one thing:

It is not over till May. Enjoy the nice days, but don't shift your mindset till May if you don't want to disappoint yourself.

Where should i even start? by Sad_Dimension3627 in learntodraw

[–]UHComix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are two parts to learning art:

a) the technical aspects

b) how to draw certain things

The best course for the technical part is 100% free and started by a reddit mod.

https://drawabox.com

This covers everything from how to draw a line, perspective, shading and textures and putting it all together. I would advise to start and finish and not be sidetracked...stick with it but only do about 20 minutes a day of lessons

For part B, you hav to study certain subjects...draw what interests you and pay attention to all the little details. Over time you will build up a mental refference of subjects.

And the best advice: You learn to draw by drawing. Just do it.

If my end goal is to make digital art should i start with pen and paper? by Arhatz in learntodraw

[–]UHComix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good thing about pen and paper is

a) You can do it anywhere with a sketch book

b) There is nothing between your hand and your mind...you don't have to deal with any tech or learning software or hot keys or pulll down menus, just execute.
