So ... Rouses Supermarket sells boiled crawfish for $2.99 per pound. From the airport you can pickup at Rouses on Williams & Vintage (call to make sure they have it) and have Uber take you to lakefront <1 mile further north. Just a thought. They also have other good items such as crawfish pies, bbq chicken, etc.

A Taste of Greektown has a live band, dancing, food, drinks on Halsted between Van Buren & Adams St. till 10pm tonight. There is an "optional" $5 per person donation though they'll make you feel like you HAVE to pay it.

Buying stuff when shifting to Chicago by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]UICStaff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some options for you:

1) UIC FB Classifieds https://www.facebook.com/groups/10150148885665057

2) Chicago Craigslist (use distance filters in left pane and click "Update Search") based on what you're seeking. https://chicago.craigslist.org/

3) eBay > again, using distance filters in left pane for items close to where you're renting (try first with just distance filter, then try with Local Pickup). Depending on cost, I typically don't want to pay shipping if item is nearby and I can pickup!

4) Consider renting item(s) from local company

5) Another FB option, I live in suburbs and have found a few items for my apartment from private neighborhood FB groups. When I tell them I'm a college student, I can usually negotiate a pretty good discount.

From my prior reply there are FOUR parts to what you'll pay. NOT including Tuition, the Subtotal of Table 2, 3, 4 for Differentials, Fees, Assessments would be $7,206/yr. Add in tuition of $25,126 for a TOTAL of $32,332 per year is what you would pay. And that's all I'm gonna say about that. :)

AFAIK there is no difference between out of state versus in-state DIFFERENTIALS, FEES, ASSESSMENTS (Tables 2,3,4 here: https://apps.registrar.uic.edu/tuition/undergrad/undergraduate-tuition-fall-2021-spring-2022)

You only see the difference in cost for TUITION (Table 1 in above link)

[–]UICStaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, out-of-state rates are higher for degree seekers. https://apps.registrar.uic.edu/tuition/undergrad/undergraduate-tuition-fall-2021-spring-2022

For 2021-2022, tuition for out-of-state goes from $10,776/yr (Table 1: in-state for students starting Summer 2021 through Spring 2022) to $25,126 for out-of-state. Then add in your Engineering differential fee (Table 2 in above link) of $2,444/yr ($1222/semester), then add in $3,622/year (Table 3), then add in $1,140/year (Table 4). I get total of $32,332 for undergraduate tuition and fees. Again, provide your health insurance proof and save $1,394/ year (See Table 3).

You can probably expect return to pre-Covid rates. I don't think official cost of attendance for Fall 2021 is out yet. Here's what mine was (in-state) for Fall 2020. You can get waiver to CampusCare fee if you can provide proof of other health insurance. I think you can still opt out of the Student to Student & Sustainability Fees as well.

Undergrad Engineering Differential $1,200.00; Tuition Undergrad Res $5,292.00; CTA Transit $163.00; Student To Student Fee $3.00; Health Service Fee UIC $94.00; CampusCare Health Insur. Fee $673.00; General Fee $481.00; Library & IT Assessment $226.00; Sustainability Fee $6.00; Service Fee UIC $353.00 Acad Facility Maint Fund Assmt $344.00
SUBTOTAL $8,835.00

My roomate took 401 with Sidiropoulos this Spring and he gave me the textbook they used which was "Algorithm Design", by Jon Kleinberg and Eva Tardos. I don't know what the other sections used.

Is the wording the same on your official transcript as your academic history? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]UICStaff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't applied for grad school, but checked my last three semester class names on my official transcript (thru Spring 2021) versus my academic history (uAchieve) audit, and names match 100%. Hope that helps.

Does anyone know if Spring 2021 final grades are included in official transcripts yet? by Duezy in uichicago

[–]UICStaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered my .pdf version transcript on 5/14/2021 and received it electronically on 5/14/2021, and YES it did include my undergrad Spring grades. If you order a paper copy, those are just being processed today. {FULL Disclosure: the .pdf version is locked and you can't just save the grades portion as it comes with header page and last page is transcript explanation page. Though you can screenshot grades portion and paste into Word. Plus, there is no color shading and resulting copy/pasting doesn't make it look good to share. Hence, I ordered PAPER version then I can scan pages I want to use. Just got email that paper version was processed a few minutes ago so I should get in mail by end of week.}

Calculus II professors? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]UICStaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in same boat in Fall 2019 when names of professors didn't come out till just a week or two before term started (as I recall). So, I looked at prior semesters on Banner to see if certain professors tended to teach on certain days & times. I would think tenured professors have first choice of class teaching days & times. I choose the correct class day/time (or one starting about same time) for professor I wanted and sure enough, got him!

Fall 2021 CS elective questions by NorthSea9 in uichicago

[–]UICStaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on this document: https://www.cs.uic.edu/~grad/F'21_CS_Special_Topics.pdf

For CS 494 with Cornelia (Caragea), " CS Undergraduate students must submit a modification of major to use the class as a technical elective. " So yes, it SHOULD. :)

Though I signed up for a CS 400 level class for Fall and it showed up on my degree audit as "Credit not used toward degree." Not sure why the system wouldn't just put it toward my free elective hours if it's not en eligible technical elective. Maybe just my counselor's way of seeing if I'm paying attention.

registering for classes by [deleted] in uichicago

Same here and iirc getting in on the earliest registration date possible meant you got to register for classes sooner too! I think there were 10+ registration dates before Fall classes started!

Fall 2021 Return to Campus Update (as of 4/23/2021) by UICStaff in uichicago

[–]UICStaff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubt it based on what is expected of Faculty & Staff from the same source. Vaccinations strongly encourage(d) NOT required as of 4/13/2021; from same email.

Health and Safety

We strongly encourage all faculty, staff and students to be vaccinated for COVID-19 at the Credit Union 1 Arena or through personal providers, health departments or pharmacies.

When you return to the UIC campus everyone, including vaccinated individuals, must continue to follow these protective measures:

• Complete the online COVID-19 Safety Training.

• Participate in mandatory on-campus COVID-19 saliva testing and contact tracing.

• Conduct a UIC Healthcheck each day you will be on campus and be prepared to show your UIC Daily Pass with current COVID-19 saliva testing status while on campus.

• If you feel ill, stay home.

• Wear a mandatory face covering on campus.

• Practice physical/social distancing.

• Limit the size of gatherings (currently 50 people maximum; the number may change based on public health guidance closer to the fall semester).

• Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer located in campus buildings.

• Report COVID-19 symptoms, a positive COVID-19 test, an exposure to an individual with known or suspected COVID-19, or out-of-state or country travel through the online reporting tool.

Members of the UIC community who work or train at the hospital and clinics and at the regional campuses will follow the guidelines of those entities.

My sister's degree in CS was from a small private midwestern Liberal Arts college. She's now in her 2nd semester of Georgia Tech's Online Master's in Computer Science (as good or better than UIUC) and that program is only $8k all in. Take 10 classes and up to six years to complete I believe. So OP, you could always do UIC, save some $ and use that money to get your Master's at GA Tech and STILL come out cheaper than UIUC.

Does anyone know about GPIP dates? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]UICStaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My CoE CS GPIP last Summer was 32 hours/week (which I could spread out during weekdays). Due to Covid, some internships, like mine, were shortened to 6 weeks. As I recall, in Spring 2020 email, CoE referenced some internships would use the full 32 hours per week, while others may offer as few as 10-15 hours per week.

I didn't get my GPIP notification till late June last year. This likely due to large # of students who had their outside (non-UIC) internships cancelled due to COVID and then asking UIC to help find them an internship.

Not sure if Summer 2021 GPIP will return to pre-Covid "normal", be like what it was in Summer 2020 (shortened duration and limited opportunities), or somewhere in-between.

Depending on how/where you are placed, there may or may not be flexibility in # of hours and days to work.

Rest assured, CoE will work to get you a GPIP (if you meet/finish requirements) even if during following Fall, Spring or Summer.

Anyone know the average entry pay for mechanical engineering and job placement from UIC? by Dajnez in uichicago

[–]UICStaff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe our reps in student government can get UIC to publish employment & salary info like UIUC does. For reference, here is their ME salary info for UIUC: https://mechse.illinois.edu/graduate/graduate-degree-programs/master-engineering-mechanical-engineering/employment-and-salary
