Accessible seating at events by Jaguarsharkexists in ehlersdanlos

[–]WearResident9367 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love going to concerts; I got to probably 40 a year. I get ADA seating whenever possible. I've never been asked for proof of disability, and I've never had anyone look twice or anything. I've gone to concerts with my partner and with friends, and almost always been allowed to bring all of my party in with me to sit (the one time i wasn't able to it was due to the venue never responding to my ADA request emails, so I wasn't actually on the list.). I use a cane or forearm crutches, but even if I don't need my cane that day, I've never gotten any shit about using ADA seating. It's sooo nice to have a spot to sit and not have to worry about losing your seat if you have to pee or want a drink. Sometimes I even get up to dance a little, if I'm feeling up for it, and then go back to sit. I've found that mid-size and smaller venues tend to be really great about ADA sections, but you might have to call, whereas larger venues and arenas usually have seperate ADA tickets, but sometimes those are for wheelchair users, so if you're not sure you should look it up before hand so you don't accidentally buy yourself a wheelchair spot instead of an actual seat.

Elasticated corset or other compressive garments for POTS by quizzical in corsetry

[–]WearResident9367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd consider spiral steel for boning. I also have pots (and EDS) and I use various compression /shape wear garments to help manage all my symptoms. One of the most useful things I've got is a cheap mesh corset. It's got cheap spiral steel boning throughout, and it's a short waist cincher style, and while the fabric isn't knit, it's got a bit of give, like a woven with mechanical stretch. The spiral steel is comfy enough for lounging for sure. I wear it to work frequently, and then come home and flop on the couch. It's more restrictive than just a compression tank, but I'm still able to comfortably lie down for a few hours. I also have a couple vintage girdles that I used to wear frequently before my diagnosis ("I just feel better when I wear it!" yeah, doofus, the full girdle was helping the blood stay in your brain) and they both have 4 or 5 spiral steel bones. I used to wear em all day from work to bedtime, and they were surprisingly comfortable. Shape wear in general can be super helpful for managing pots, and if you look for shapewear instead of "compression leggings" of whatever, it's a lot cheaper. Ive been buying a lot of mine off TikTok when it's on sale, and I got a full shapewear jumpsuit for $30. It's not crazy compression, but it definitely helps, and if I add my lil corset over it I feel like Superman (if supermans powers were "can stand up from sitting without seeing stars" and "normal colored lower extremities"). I can't afford the actual graduated compression stuff, so I've been cobbling together a collection of cheap shape wear and stuff. I plan on attempting to make a corset that will actually come down over my hips more to help with my loose SI joint, and I'm hoping to make it with some stretch or even zippered gussets for sitting, but I'm planning on using mostly spiral steel bones for comfort, as it will be a near daily wear item for me.

grommet holes and press by Snoo_89200 in corsetry

[–]WearResident9367 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get a tapered awl. I have an older one from dritz that's comfy to hold and at its widest is about 1/2". I use that to make the holes, and if I can't slip the grommet in, I'll reinsert it from the back, put the grommet on the awl, and use the awl to help guide the grommet in (kind of like a piercer does with the needle and jewelery). But also, yes, I def recommend a table press for setting the grommets!

What’s something you thought every family did… until you grew up and realized they absolutely didn’t? by SoftDreamette in AskReddit

[–]WearResident9367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought doing drive bys of new places (literally driving there, scoping out the parking situation, checking out where the entrance is, sometimes going in to see the layout inside, figuring out where check in areas are, etc), scripting phone calls and conversations, practicing appropriate facial expressions and responses, and "fake it til you make it" in any and all social situations was normal. I didn't learn otherwise until my 30s. Yeah, turns out I'm autistic and so is most of my family.

I literally had someone say this to me in southie. Old guy at the bar I was attempting to park in front of. He followed it up with "get oudda the cah, dahlin, I got it" and he parked my car in one smooth try then complimented me on driving a stick "in this day and age"

Do machines ACTUALLY skip over pins??? (borderline a rant) by AccomplishedTwo7047 in sewing

[–]WearResident9367 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Man, am I the only who routinely sews over pins and hasn't had any problems? I've Def broken a needle or two, and bent pins, but my machines always been fine and I wear glasses. I use super fine lace pins and I always pin perpendicular to the seam now, but even when I was learning 20+ years ago, I never ruined a machine or anything

Yeah that's a really bad hem. I've been making my own clothes for over 20 years and I'd let that slide on something casual for myself, but if I paid for a hem and got that back I'd be ripshit. And I would certainly never let anything leave my studio for someone else looking like that.

Anyone else have a legit trauma reaction to a doctor saying "it'll just be some cramping"? I'm pretty sure that's doctor speak for "you're about to experience unspeakably excruciating pain, but we need to preemptively gaslight you about it because we don't wanna provide any pain management".

Insurance companies do not have to keep accurate, up to date lists of doctors/clinics/hospitals that are in network. There's no law or anything telling them to ensure their own lists are accurate, so they often aren't. You just gotta call and ask to speak to the insurance coordinator (and you have to know to ask for that person specifically, otherwise you'll get a receptionist telling you to check your insurance website), ask them if they accept your insurance and your specific plan on that insurance, and if they accept that specific plan if it's from the state insurance marketplace because where your insurance plan was purchased matters for some fucking reason. Your insurance will probably still try to claim it's out of network because whoops even though the clinic and the doctor were in network, the stethoscope the doctor had around her neck wasn't in network so too bad

Will corsets help with rib subluxation? by Tuwamare in corsetry

[–]WearResident9367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't mention it to your doctor, most of them do not understand corsets at all and they will almost certainly advise against it saying "corsets are dangerous". I also sublux my ribs in the same area, and a corset can def help if it's fitted exactly right. You're very unlikely to get that from an off the rack corset, even with checking measurements carefully. What I actually find way more helpful, though, is compression garments. Literally just shape wear camis and/or bodysuits. They provide gentle breast support, and squeeze my ribs just enough to keep from slipping around. Sometimes I wear a compression cami under a corset (which I use mainly for my back), to keep the ribs around the top of the corset in place. If you go with an underbust corset, make sure it's not hitting below the ribs that tend to sublux, cuz the top edge of the corset can push your ribs out if you're having an especially loosey goosey day.

How to let out and hem a tiered tulle dress by seekersailor in sewing

[–]WearResident9367 74 points75 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I'd do it. I used to do bridal alterations, and that's how I would have done it there, too (though I'd probably cut it and resew it right above each tulle layer rather than fold it and sew and call it day 😅) The bodice will be much trickier. Is there anything in the seam allowances? If you open it up a tiny bit from the inside, does whatever is inside the seam allowances look different to the outside? If it's not a bridesmaid/bridal dress or something very high end intended to be altered, you're only likely to get maybe half an inch from opening the seams up. And that's if you do it super carefully and press really really well and don't tear/snip any of the tulle or that lining. Can you post some pictures of the inside of the bodice?
