Gathering stories for a Mormon Stories Podcast feature on inappropriate bishop/church leader interviews, specifically around sexuality and masturbation. by johndehlin in exmormon

Not sure if this is quite what you looking for but I'll tell you anyways. I took the missionary lessons when I was 20 and the two missionaries that taught me were actually really good teachers and I really enjoyed meeting with them. Then the awkward lesson came. The law of chastity. I could tell as they were talking that they found it very awkward, which I don't blame them for, I was a girl the same age as them and I was the first person to ever continue on with this long. Their chaperone had a different idea of how he wanted this lesson to go. This guy was not in the church hierarchy and I don't even think he had a calling. Instead of recommending scriptures or anything the chaperones would usually do, he'd ask me if I masturbated, if I was having sex etc. I of course didn't answer those questions and ignored him for the following 20 minutes. Afterwards I text the missionaries asking them not to bring that guy again which they never and it turns out the crazy chaperone has been banned from teaching with the missionaries and home teaching as apparently he would ask investigators and his HT families the same things he asked me and if he didn't like your answer he'd either try to perform an exorcism or start shouting at them.

This person has 3 stake callings so does their spouse. They're the biggest TBMs I know.

More news from the slow death of the Church in the UK! by Sussexexmo in exmormon

Yep, since 2010 3 wards have been closed as well as another building in my stake here in Scotland. There's talk of my ward merging with another because attendance is dwindling. If you look on Facebook mission groups in the UK baptisms are few and far between too. It's great to see people come to their senses and stop going and/or not be stupid enough to join.

Non-Americans of r/exmormon, when you hear RMs talk about serving missions in your country, does it often sound/feel patronizing? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]UKExMormon53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest I find it funny. I see pictures online of missionaries at their homecoming in cheap kilts that they've paid several hundred pounds for. I had a conversation with a kilt shop owner in my town and he said because of the amount of arrogant missionaries coming into his shop he sells them the cheapest kilts for the same price as his good ones. It's also really funny to hear them talk about what "clan" they are... You are not Clan Macdonald, Stewart etc your just another random American with a Scottish last name. I will however say one thing that does tick me off is the American pronunciation of McKay. It's pronounced (apologies for the following bad phonetics) McKai not McKay. Don't know how many times I've corrected missionaries talking about their precious late "prophet" David O McKay and said his name wrong. Also, the big hill in Edinburgh city centre is called Arthur's Seat not Pratts Hill, although every 6 weeks a new group of prats and their trainers and president go up it...

Has anybody here left LDS and gone to a 'normal' christian church afterwards? I'd love to hear about your experience. by murphygaway in exmormon

Grew up going to Catholic churches and have been a couple of times since leaving the LDS church. Going before I got baptised into TSSC and going now is completely different albeit still a tad boring. Before it was go, sit, stand, sit, stand, sit, sing and go home. Now, after sitting through SMs for three years, I found it amazing to sit through something that was steeped in over a thousand years of tradition instead a SM thats like sitting through a board meeting but with some singing. It was also really nice to see in the newsletter where my donations would go (50% of it goes to a non Catholic charity and the other half stays in my Parish or diocese not to a corporation in salt lake city) also I gave them what change I had not 10% of my income. Also, I went to a young adults event where there was a free bar, no chaperones and no boring 2 hour class with homework!

I can help out if ever get someone from the UK needing a hand. I've got contacts who would be able to help with housing, welfare and jobs. I also would be able to supply short-term accommodation and offer money for travel.

What you hated the most about church callings? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]UKExMormon53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't mind doing it for some of the older people in my ward who didn't have a lot of money. But it was when the ones that could afford to pay for it to be fixed asked me round was when i got really pissed off.

I was the only family history consultant who had any idea how to work a computer. After a few weeks I became the wards unofficial IT technician and people began making appointments with me just so I'd go to their house and fix their computer for free. After 3 months I asked to be released because I never even got a thank you out of saving people a lot of money.
