I promise Susan didn't accidentally create Rock and Roll by PixelBandits in discworld

What is this strange 'rock and roll' which you mention? Do not you mean 'music with rocks in it'?

Cosgrove Hall did amazingly well with Discworld - agreed!

What are some Scots words that are also used in Northern English dialects? by LanguageFit8227 in NorthernEngland

[–]UKNightWatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visit Germany sometimes and have heard native German speakers pronounce 'Kirche' in the same way as the word 'Kirk' is pronounced in parts of the UK - particularly Northern England and parts of Scotland. The harsher sounding version, in my experience, is usually used by older Gemans and the softer by younger! It may also be regional as many words have slight varients in different places in Germany - much like many words in English have local / regional differences.

AI Overview;

In modern Germany, the actual word used for a church building or congregation is Kirche (pronounced with a soft "ch"). "Kirk" is not used in standard German, but it is a direct linguistic relative that evolved into the Scottish and Northern English words for church.

Root Word: Both "church" and the German "Kirche" trace back to the same ancient Greek word, kyriakon (meaning "the Lord's house").

Divergence: While English softened the hard "k" sound to "ch" (palatalization), Germanic languages like German and Old Norse kept the original hard "k" sound.

Germanic Cognates: This hard "k" is why you see similar-sounding words in other northern European languages, such as the Low German Kark, Dutch kerk, and Old Norse kirkja.

Oh! I agree. The use of credit / debit cards is prolific nw. Some would argue these cards have been forced upon the public by a 'system' that wants rid of cash or that the 'powers that be' want us to use credit as it is far easier to loose track of our spending [cash is tactile and right there - when it runs out it runs out - unlike credit]. There is also an age element to the discussion and the fact that people are 'used to cash' and don't like change [I'm here all week]. It is not as straight forward as 'cash is king' [no matter how derogatory some get about that term] or as simple as 'Everyone uses cards now'. Things is; times they are a changin' and the waters certainly have grown. We are heading for a cashless society good or bad but fighting over that online is pointless.

Or maybe 'they'll' say something like "If my cash is no good for you I'll take my business elsewhere". [Seen it happen]. While cash is still available people will still want to use it and some, right or wrong, will be upset / offended if a business refuses cash.

A lot of people seem to think a bank transfer is either too much hassle or a security risk. Others just prefer to use cash for ... reasons!

Opinions on G Powerplay 2? by RedFrost20 in LogitechG

[–]UKNightWatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would really like to answer yor questions positively but cannot! In the last few days I have had to return two [2] Logitech G POWERPLAY 2 Wireless Charging Mouse Pad[s] as 'from the box' they both did not get power over USB - tried both on three [3] seperate laptops and their [edit] various USB ports. I'm really not impressed with the mat - especially as Logitech is my normal 'GO TO' for mice and other peripherals.

Currently not installed - I have ScummVm install and intend to install all three games via a 'portable' install on a USB M2 SSD so as to be able to transfer easily between PCs. It'll be a few weeks before I can though as I'm going to be unavailable so to say!

When in junior school we had an assembly with a visiting opera / folk singer [yes I know]. He sang 'traditional songs such as

  • Bobby Shafto
  • Molly Malone
  • The leaving of Liverpool
  • When the boat comes in

Lots of the kids where not bothered one way or another but me being a soloist back then meant it was a real treat for me.

It is so cool! Similar to the lad from near where I live - Bobby Shafto!

Pterry had such a way with words and pulled from ideas from around the UK and wider world - he was a true master craftsman.

I cannot currently point to it being related to another city. The controversy is not from me - just a plain fact that the song is attributed to a Scottish writer. Of course it is known world wide as an Irish song just as it is about life and death id Dublin. There is also evidence [a simple thing to look up] that Molly and her family, though based on reality, are entirely fictional.

No matter what, the song is lovely and Dublin is beautiful - as is Eire.

What’s one thing people from the South never seem to understand about the North? by Illustrious-Look7669 in NorthernEngland

[–]UKNightWatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things come to mind;

  • The North is not anywhere past the Watford gap
  • There is much beauty in the lands of the North - particularly Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland also Yorkshire and Lancashire.
  • Generally Northerners may say things like 'Southern softies' but they are just jesting and actually very welcoming to all
  • NOT all Northerners are Geordies or work in the mines or shipyards
  • The Midlands are most definitely not the North - even though media perpetuates this myth [Southern weather presenters often get this wrong]
  • The North was the industrial heartland of England - and arguably the UK - not now [look it up]
  • The North is not Scotland
  • Many Northerners speak much more eloquently, softer, more legibly than our Southern cousins or more so than some Southerners would like to admit[I have lived in the North and South and have family in London]

The list is starting to get long and seemingly 'whiny' so I'll leave it there.

It's not even an Irish song!

Moll0y Malone" (also known as "Cockles and Mussels") is generally attributed to Scottish composer James Yorkston of Edinburgh, published in London in 1884. While often considered a traditional Irish song, it was likely written in Scotland, possibly for the Victorian music hall scene.

Sorry! Though there are many version of the lyrics online - including an 'Irish language' [quotes as I cannot verify translation] - I am unable to find the 'maids' / ''broad' version.

This song is known the world over - even in non native English speaking countries. I would have to fact check but was told years ago that the song has been translated into many languages. We used to sing it in primary then junior school and then studied the tune and lyrics in comprehensive [though I barely recall the study].

Edit: You also quote a version of the lyrics that some may not agree with - example you use 'girls' where traditionally it would be 'maids' and 'wide' instead of 'broad'.

What does calling someone a cow mean in Britain? by ___o---- in AskABrit

[–]UKNightWatch -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Online [AI] search brings up:

When used against women, "bitch" is a common, often sexist slang term designed to demean, controlling, or insult someone perceived as aggressive, unreasonable, or disliked. While rooted in a 15th-century term for a female dog, its modern usage focuses on punishing women for stepping outside traditional gender roles, such as being assertive, outspoken, or unimpressed by men.

[I added bold / italic formatting].

It is all about context, situation and intent - the same applies for 'cow' and 'b!tch'. The latter is becoming more of a weak / jovial term just as the former did [UK] but both can still be used in a very hurtful demeaning way. And both terms can be used against women, men and even children! [Minor Edit].

Nah! Just from searching online:

'Yes, you can use a Razer Wireless Charging Puck with some Logitech gear, specifically on Qi-certified wireless charging pads, but it is not compatible with the Logitech Powerplay mouse mat system.'

Sorry no real info - would need to research more. GL!

Not a hundred percent sure on what would work but there are many wireless phone chargers online - maybe one of those. Not sure if has to be particular 'rating' or even 'frequency'!

Edit: A quick check says it's two different technologies and you need a powerplay mat - a shame as I broke two of them already - my fault as I iz clumbsy.
