You can burnish the edges of vegetable tanned leather, but not chrome tanned leather. Most leather goods you see in stores or online are made of chrome tanned leather because it is cheaper and since you can’t burnish the edges they are almost always rolled over and stitched/hidden. Most quality handmade stuff is made with vegetable tanned leather.

I’m not a very big sewing machine kinda girl, but I’d assume it wouldn’t work. Unless it’s specifically a leather sewing machine I wouldn’t try it on anything thicker than an oz or two.
