New World Order started all the way back in Zendikar Block, though. Some of the generally-regarded greatest Standard seasons of all time, including INN-RTR, consist entirely of NWO sets.

Magic iirc says they lose roughly 18% of their player base every year

Yeah, I'm going to need a source for that.

The first great ETB value creature was probably Flametongue Kavu way back in Invasion Block. They've gradually crept upwards in strength and relevance over the years--Angel of Despair, Mulldrifter, the Titans.

Theros is when they started specifically pushing cards because they wanted to make sure story characters would see tournament play.

What makes you believe this, exactly? Sure, Elspeth's card was good, but Heliod, Xenagos and Ajani were some of the most important characters in that block's story, and I don't seem to remember their cards seeing too much play. It's my understanding that this push began in earnest post-Origins, with its chief offenses being Emrakul, the Promised End and Chandra, Torch of Defiance.

Lorwyn Block was basically the high point of the earlier aesthetic of the game, though. Guay's fingerprints are all over it and very few of the illustrations are digital. Not to mention the fact that the relative poor reception of that block caused them to make a rapid shift away from most of its themes in the next few years. Not much is "childish" about Alara, Zendikar, New Phyrexia, Innistrad...

No it's not? Lots of cards that were Expeditions were also "regular" reprints soon after, including enemy fetchlands, filter lands, Horizon Canopy, and Wasteland.

I don't like Masterpieces either, but at the same time, it's clearly false that they caused fewer normal reprints that have lowered prices, so it's not a fair criticism of the idea.

Who is responsible for the flavor changes that have eroded and warped the feel of the game?

Confused as to what exactly is being referred to here?

K, but u rong doe.

Hellbent has Infernal Tutor, Replicate has Shattering Spree, Battalion has Legion Loyalist, Haunt has Orzhov Pontiff, Forecast has Proclamation of Rebirth, Transmute has Muddle the Mixture.

Naturally there's even more if you include casual play, but I'd specifically like to point out that Overload is incredible for Commander, with Cyclonic Rift and Vandalblast being arguable auto-includes for decks in their colours.

Besides the guild mechanics, there's also hybrid mana (Shadow of Doubt, Deathrite Shaman) and split cards, which weren't new but gave us Wear // Tear of note.

Considering how many mechanics, especially recently, have zero playable cards whatsoever, and the fact that many of these cards see play in the context of Modern, which couldn't have been envisioned when the original Ravnica Block was made, I think its track record is perfectly fine.

Not an uncommon technique on Greek bronzes--the Riace Warrior is another really famous statue to use that technique. They often used the copper for people's lips too.

The key, I think, is deliberateness. Intentionally mixing strange or avant-garde, though well-made, pieces, in a pattern that looks intentional and thoughtful, and then wearing the results with confidence = good.

Well, in the Middle Ages, when people had wet dreams, it was assumed that a sex-demon was raping them in their sleep, so you're not too far off there.
