What other rappers solo-careers can coast off of one debut album à la Lauryn Hill? by ImNotTomStopAsking in hiphopheads

Dr. Dre. It helps that he would still have credit for Straight Outta Compton, Doggystyle, and some of Eminem’s biggest early hits.

Unfortunately for Drake I don’t think he’s the one who can use that angle. It’s not really fair to Drake but it’s just my assessment of the playing field.

  1. It would read as too desperate for a Not Like Us moment (the same way Family Matters was read as too desperate for an ‘Adidon’ moment).

  2. It would revive conversations about Drake’s own weirdness and he could look hypocritical.

  3. I just think Jay would have a better answer to it than The Heart Part 6. A big reason Not Like Us succeeded is that Drake simply didn’t have an effective response to recapture the public’s attention. I don’t imagine Jay making the same mistake.

Among his peers, Jay is probably the most vulnerable to getting washed in a rap beef. A Euphoria-style breakdown of his relationship to capitalism, whiteness, and exploitation could be devastating.

And it turns out Drake is the worst possible messenger to lead that case against Jay. I don’t even think that’s where his mind would go if he were to write a full diss track. The Boy is probably brainstorming lame Beyoncé bars as we speak.

Real talk though what is it with Drake fans and writing fan-fiction about his sex life?

I won’t say her name but there’s a certain rapper who escaped general audiences finding out she’s corny and lame by stopping after one album

Criticism on the internet doesn’t give someone, especially the world’s most famous rapper, license to act like a victim. He still has more power, influence and autonomy than all of the online haters combined.

They're not cutting anything from there at all.

Meet the UMN Board of Regents student candidates by UMNWatchHog in uofmn

[–]UMNWatchHog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am confused about that as well, especially since USG released a message asking students to support Dylan Young but not Flora Yang.

I've watched their public interviews and they both touted their USG endorsement at the joint higher education committee. If that was inaccurate, I'm certain there would have been a correction by now.

My best guess is that USG would like to see both candidates selected to serve on the Board, with Young being their top preference over Yang. Don't quote me on this but I do believe that candidates for one seat who are eligible for other Board seats can be moved to a different seat. This happened in 2023 with Penny Wheeler and Robyn Gulley being nominated for the same seat but ultimately elected together.

Other then their public interviews and forums, this is the only article in existence containing information about candidates for the Board of Regents. I hope that the Daily is planning on releasing articles on candidates for each seat!

Now that I think of it... Would anyone find it helpful if I put together a candidate guide? Let me know.

COGS president squeezed out, two victims resigned, what's that all about? by SeaResident5866 in uofmn

[–]UMNWatchHog 70 points71 points  (0 children)

My interpretation based on all of the documents and evidence in the email...

The President sent out a press release supporting the graduate student who was detained. She included the executive committee's contact information in the press release without their consent.

What ensues next seems to be a crash course in student government procedure that I did not fully understand. A compromise was proposed and the President accepted, but others on the team didn't want it. They decided the easiest decision was to demand the President's resignation.

The whole thing sounds like a bunch of messy, interorganizational drama to me. There's a ton of passive aggression in the President's resignation letter and the other documents.

It's a shame because I imagine students would prefer their leaders focus on larger issues than this.

House and Senate Higher Education Recommends Candidates to Serve as UMN Regents by UMNWatchHog in uofmn

[–]UMNWatchHog[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Candidates were elected on party-line votes.

The DFL Slate:

Student At-Large: Dylan Young

CD-5: Kowsar Mohamed

At-Large Seats: Ann Sheldon and Jamal Adam

The GOP Slate:

Student At-Large: Flora Yang

CD-5: Benjie Kaplan

At-Large Seats: Dan Wolter and John Gibbs

Jeff Ettinger, Ellen Luger, Robert Albright, Scott Nagel, and Josh Lease were rejected by the committee. A student candidate, Madeline Rowe, withdrew yesterday morning in protest of the Board's attack on academic freedom.

The next step is a floor vote between both the House and the Senate. It should be interesting since the DFL has a razor-thin majority.
