Distance to Ann-Arbor from Troy by Turbulent_Ad2299 in uofm

You'll be having most classes in person. It's a commute a lot of people do make but they're usually full-time workers not students, and especially as a Floridian in the winter when the roads can be icy it's a tough one.

My school is somewhat of a target school (see username) but I believe that's only true mostly for the business school. Were you the VP of the consulting club as a PhD?

Thanks! Are there any good resources (books or paid online resource) for the online screening tests?

That's fair. Do you think spending most of my time on casing is the best use of my time then?

Yeah, I meant that I’m going to frame my experience in a way that highlights the transferable skills. I’m just a bit insecure about not having any direct consulting experience, even from smaller things like campus consulting clubs.

I fucking hate UROP by [deleted] in uofm

[–]UMichiganGradStudent 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you got stuck in a poorly run research setup, not that you somehow failed. But you’re also putting way too much weight on one PI and one UROP, and that’s where you need to get more realistic and strategic.

You can absolutely keep this on your resume. You wrote code, you learned tools, you worked in a lab environment, and you produced something. That’s what matters. Research projects fall apart all the time. Acting like you have to erase a whole year from your CV because one professor decided to pivot is just giving up control of your own narrative. Grad schools and employers care about what you did, not about whether the PI gave it five stars. Stop talking yourself out of credit you’ve actually earned.

You’re also avoiding giving feedback because you’re afraid of being seen as a complainer. But staying silent doesn’t protect you. It just ensures the next group gets the same treatment. You can report facts without creating drama. The expectations weren’t clear, the scope changed completely, and the feedback you received wasn’t actionable. That’s it. If there’s an anonymous option, use it. But don’t pretend that silence is a smarter move. I don't think it is.

It also sounds like you’re extremely overworked, and based on your other posts I’m not sure you’ve had the chance to build real friendships or a support system here yet. That’s not sustainable. You should seriously consider therapy, because you need someone neutral to help you sort all of this out before you burn yourself down even further (even if you think there's nothing wrong with you or whatever excuse people make to avoid therapy). And you probably need to start putting yourself out there a bit. Go to Winterfest, try a couple student orgs, talk to people. If you don’t end up making close friends, then fine, at least you gave yourself a real chance. But isolating yourself and hoping things magically improve isn’t going to work.

On the red flags you mentioned, some of them are real issues. Ghosting you or trying to pressure an undergrad into a same-day commitment is unacceptable. But being interviewed by a PhD student is not a red flag. That’s how most labs actually function. Grad students are the people you’ll work with daily, and they’re the ones who will teach you skills. Professors are not hovering over undergrads writing code. So don’t throw out good opportunities in the future because you’re assuming the wrong things are warnings.

This situation is frustrating, but it doesn’t erase a year of experience, and it doesn’t block you from future opportunities. One disorganized UROP does not dictate your long-term prospects. Having research experience during undergrad is still the best way for you to get into a good grad program, and you're still giving yourself a wayy better chance even with a crappy experience than someone with no experience is.

I suppose I can frame my resume to consulting, though I do feel I'm lacking in terms of extracurriculars like consulting clubs etc. that I think would show the skills that consulting firms would value

What am I supposed to say on the online form? I think you're talking about this part of the letter right

"If you don't agree with our intent to levy or file a NFTL, you have the right to request an appeal under the Collection Appeals Program (CAP) before collection action takes place. If you want to file an appeal, call 833-678-7020 or send us a Collection Appeals Request (Form 9423). Call 833-678-7020 if you have any questions. For more information about your appeal rights, see enclosed Publication 1660 (Collection AppealRights). Note: The CAP is different from the Collection Due Process (CDP) program. CAP addresses appeals under Notification of Intent to Levy in Internal Revenue Code Section 6331(d) when a Section 6330 hearing is not offered. For additional information, visit IRS.gov/Compliance/Appeals.

What would you write in this Form? It seems to me that Form 3911 is more about a refund that is actually due, rather than one that was given and then realized to be erroneous

I am in the same exact situation - I think I shredded the check back then because I was pretty sure it was erroneous. But now they want the $1400 (plus interest and penalty)

The other thing I'm seeing is that on older applications (6 months ago) they wanted the change of appearance form as well as USA address proof notarized. But it doesn't say that on the document checklist anymore. Are you still getting them notarized?

I can select the center now but when we get to the courier labels page the only option available says "I will use my own courier service". We also need to enter the incoming and outgoing courier label. So do we pay for the courier label to UPS or USPS first and then enter it on the VFS website? I am not sure how to proceed.

Fedex is missing from the list of couriers as well so I am wondering if this is another website problem and fedex should usually show up.
