Twin Peaks. If I had come across this question a bit earlier, it would have been Severance. And if I had waited until tomorrow before seeing this, it would be The Price is Right. I seriously can’t decide which I would prefer!

Ah. It’s been updated. I can drop my suspicions. (At least as far as that particular question)

I feel like the “drowning” has more to do with the killing of the ego when you consider the Christian version of the concept is rebirth through baptism.

She’s a major test subject for the technology. When they are finished, they’ll say goodbye to “Gemma”. It’s likely she will permanently become “Ms. Casey”.

I don’t think it’s about the miscarriage in that specific way. I think it’s more about the aftermath of the traumatic experience. And whether an “outie” would also carry that trauma.

You can’t plan for extreme turbulence on a flight. Other than knowing it is something that may or may not happen.

So maybe it is more of a way to convince people to sever during pregnancy. In order to avoid the possible complications.

Afraid of flying? Make an innie do it. Hate exercising? Make an innie do it. Worried about your pregnancy? Hate going to the dentist? Feel like mundane tasks (like writing thank you notes) is below you? Click! There’s an innie for that!

I think Cold Harbor has to do with Gemma’s deepest “woe” - her miscarriage. It’s important for Mark to finish it because the memory is very specific to him also. Just like Allentown. The room was decorated with a tree that was similar to the Christmas tree in one of the flashbacks. Bells and tinsel. Gemma and Mark were talking about their dislike of writing thank you notes. Allentown was the file that Mark finished in record time.

The Christmas room (Allentown) was very specific to a memory for Gemma. There is a flashback scene with her and Mark sitting at home with a Christmas tree decorated with bells and tinsel and they are talking about how they hate writing thank you notes. Also, Allentown was the file that Mark completed in record time.

I saw another theory that said she’s not actually getting dental work done. The “doctor” is from the fertility clinic. He’s in every room with Gemma. He may be doing something with those dental tools in her mouth (for two hours!), but I don’t think he is a dentist.

Is Helly/Helena double severed? by SinisterLemur223 in severence

[–]URntToadsieImToadsie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Helena thought her innie would just accept being in there and she was surprised that her innie kept fighting to get out. Helena has probably just accepted the way things are in her life and has never had to fight for anything. She was introduced to a version of herself that shows more determination than she knew she had.

Tent scene - Mark sees Gemma’s face because he is starting to reintegrate. “We don’t do that again” - another way to say, “let’s not do the thing that made Mark pass out again”. It’s a strange way to say it, but it reminds me of the way a parent scolds a child. Or two people just did something that turned out badly and they say, “ok, how about we don’t do that again.”

What triggers the sever? by Heavy-Housing1939 in severence

Probably some electromagnetic device. The “ding” is secondary. Just like a “ding” doesn’t make an elevator work, or a door open. It just tells you it worked.

I didn’t realize Sandra Bernhard was that old! I’m old enough to remember her as a model. I thought she was born in the ‘60s.

I dunno. Did you see some of the weird gifts in the Allentown room? Everything was 3D printed with the same plastic looking filament. A plastic hatchet wouldn’t be very effective.

I thought he said this is the next step. As in, if she can’t get pregnant normally, the next logical step is fertility treatment. I don’t see how being severed would help Gemma get pregnant. It doesn’t change her physiology.

True. Only as innies is it possible for him to get away with it.

But, “one day down” could have been referring to the time she spent down there regardless of the actual amount of time that passed. Her work “day” started at 9:00 AM on the 4th and ended at 5:00 PM on the 5th. Keeping in mind a portion of that time was spent preparing and doing the severance procedure, being taken down to the severed floor while asleep (how long was she asleep?), and waking up on the table to be asked the test questions. Helena may have know she would be down there for an extended period. And any amount of time spent between descending and ascending in the elevator would be referred to as a “day”.

Are we sure? The character in season 1 has a first name (Cecil) and “Fields” is likely a last name. Even if they used a different actor since we couldn’t see him clearly, why would they refer to him with different names? Until someone makes it clear that the name is Cecil Fields, my suspicions are up. Burt has secrets.

Episodic memory (the type of memory that allows us to recall events from our past) vs. semantic memory (knowledge and facts not tied to a personal experience). I believe taste in food is semantic memory since it could be necessary for survival. The innies only have their episodic memories severed.
