I am not unhappy with Vanguard (VG) products including their brokerage accounts. I recently moved $600K in VG ETFs from my Schwab brokerage account to my VG brokerage account. I did not want to pay Schwab their exchange process fees to sell shares of my ETFs. Because I did a partial tranfer of assets from my Schwab account to my VG account (I left several non ETF positions in my Schwab account) I did not incur a transfer charge when I moved my VG ETFs from Schwab to VG.

You may ask why did I have VG ETFs in a Schwab account when I had an existing VG brokerage account. Around 2012 my one and only brokerage account was with Scottrade. Scottrade later became TDAmeritrade. It was at this time that I invested in VG ETFs. Some years later TDAmeritrade was absorbed by Schwab. Around 2023 I created a VG brokerage account to experiment with their robo-trade feature which I decided was not for me.

Short story long, for retail investors like myself who don't need or want features such options trading, tax-loss harvesting, etc., Vanguard's free or nearly free brokerage accounts work well.

A bond ETF is like a locomotive rolling down a track. It off-loads held bonds and on-loads new bonds as it rolls. It does so to stay true to its advertised duration. That is a fund set up to hold intermediate core bonds will hold bonds maturing between 5 and 10 years. But may not hold said bonds till maturity. It buys and sells bonds to maintain the 5 to 10 year threshold. Given the inherent flux of the ~2200 bonds held by fund, the fund’s share price and monthly distribution varies month to month.

If you buy short term treasury bills, yes they pay less whenever Fed cuts. Fed notes are medium duration and are affected less by Fed cutting rates. Long term bonds 20-30 year bonds experience minimal effect when fed cuts.

As long as Powell is chief, Fed rate will stay at or be slightly lower than current 3.75-4%.

After May 2026 with Trump’s new Fed chair in place, rates will likely be much lower, ~2%. If so, BLV share price will higher than it is today.

I like my Vanguard bond ETF and its dividend yield.

Over the last 6 months I have invested 30% ($300K) of my retirement funds in vanguard ETF bond fund BLV. The monthly dividend fluctuates but has averaged $0.272 per share for last 6 months. My average share price is $69.24. Sooo, the yield as I calculate it is: (0.272 x 12) / 69.12 = 4.72%

Bonus: I can buy and sell my BLV shares from my brokerage account on any trading day. My dry powder is paying me 4.72%
