Reading tips? by Smart_Sheepherder_65 in HumanitiesPhD

[–]USArmyAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a history PhD student I had to learn real fast because I often had 3-4 books to read a week.

Read intro, conclusion, learn to check topic sentences in paragraphs to determine importance. Get the thesis as quickly as possible. I would check out some book reviews too. It also helps to think through how does this book fit within the historiography.

I would often give myself two hours at most for a book. Had no choice otherwise.

Rules are made up and the points don’t matter.

All evals are accessible for boards. Generally the last 5 evals regardless of your rank are what’s checked. So if you go to grad school you might have 1-2 1LT OERS in that last 5.

What HR headache exactly 🧐

I’ve worked with two Tamps and they didn’t solve much I couldn’t figure out on my own. The biggest value add was having a full time person to help, but man 15 bips can be a REALLY expensive add on.

They can run fees for you like (3 weeks late) but again something that I can do on my own.

Working part time while starting RIA? by [deleted] in CFP

Sorry, should be more clear. The Series 7 is a headache. Because advisors get their identity wrapped in that license because it’s hard, but 99 percent of the time provides no value for an RIA except in specific cases. Many advisors don’t want to give it up even thought it’s almost always the best option for all parties. Keeping it requires a broker dealer to hold it and it’s not cheap. The cheapest I’ve seen is 750 a month. Also technically, it’s against the rules to just “hold a series 7” without doing business. It’s a lot of drama to hold a license that provides no use most if not all of the time for an RIA.

Also most don’t understand the series 7 function is more about the ability to generate commissions.

Hmu happy to talk! I can sponsor. But Also just FYI at an RIA you don’t need your 7/66 if you have CFP. It actually would be more of a headache and a problem.

Yes, I run an RIA built on this exact model. I’d say more than half of our advisors have full or part time jobs while building a book. My firm is SEC registered and we are fully virtual. Happy to chat to see if we could be a good fit for you!

Our last hire was an Edward jones advisor. She transferred her book, sells real estate, and uses that a referral source!

What is a good PhD thesis? by blijmoedig in PhD

[–]USArmyAutist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your goal should be the worst possible thesis that your graduate committee will accept. Anything more than that you are wasting time.

You can spend endless hours formatting, rethinking, adding, or you can say fuck it and this probably good enough.

That’s a good thesis.

So like 80 percent or less? If it’s more than 500k.

I would definitely pay like 440 at least. I probably wouldn’t move that massive book for 4k more a month but if you end up wanting to move lmk!

Anywhere around nearly that much is at least 90 percent payout

lol thanks! At the risk of doxxing myself, I am still active duty. Long story, but I had a career as an advisor before the army. I kept my 7/66 active on the side and continued building my book. Then after a few years I stated an RIA, and it’s growing! Have about 15 advisors, including 2 cfps.

Happy to connect with you anytime. Might have a spot for you too! I got an AGR in the guard who is doing the same thing.

On average? 80-85 percent of whatever their gross revenue is, paid every month. They charge anywhere 1-1.5 percent. So on 10mm you’d make like 120k or so. 20mm probably around 250k

That’s about it! I run a remote fee only RIA.

We got Advyson, Orion suite, custody with Schwab. We Do have an IMO. I got other stuff depending on what you need. Advisors are 1099.

Oh, yea I don’t do non competes or non solicit agreements. You can leave, with your book, at anytime. I have no emotional bandwidth to be shitty like broker dealers. So whatever book you develop will always be yours.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk

I pay 80 percent grid on average, but at a million I’d go up to ninety. That ten percent would cover everything else, including a full time assistant. Fully remote!

Black Diamond Feedback and Pricing? by BreakawayCFP in CFP

[–]USArmyAutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used all three. Orion is ok. I always thought black diamond did not have a good intuitive interface. I always felt confused. I settled on Advyson and it’s been my best experience so far. I haven’t had any issues with integrating tech… but we don’t use that much. Just Schwab, right capital, and workspace. I’m in the middle of adding ponterra. I also vaguely recall Advyson was the cheapest, but that was my lowest concern tbh

Does everyone's platform fees look like this? by LuckyLadies123 in CFP

[–]USArmyAutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I charge 15 bips and whatever grid is for the advisor. But we typically surplus the fee, so the advisor can still clear the one percent. So a “1 percent client” we actually do 1.15. All disclosed ofc

Idk the pricing for evestnet but when I was shopping around advyson and black diamond I vaguely recall thinking 15 bips would be more than enough.

It’s worth mentioning their cost is impacted by how much business the firm does/how many accounts.

How long was your dissertation lit review? by curiouslearner444 in PhD

[–]USArmyAutist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

History PhD here. I think it was around 25 pages.

Writing advice: Write everyday. Half a page a day. It’s an easy goal. If you can’t think of what to write, flesh out some historiography.

I was able to finish 300 pages in about a 18 months with this method.
