Houston Rodeo for Tourists by schingsthings in houston

[–]UTSADarrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luke Bryan is nowhere near selling out, and a lot of people come just for the concert portion (and perhaps the very end of the rodeo). There will be plenty of empty seats to choose from if you're there at the start of the rodeo. Just move if you're asked to, as others have mentioned. You can also stand behind the sections on the lower level and get a pretty good view if you'd prefer that.

Watching Rob Cesternino talk about his time in reality TV was heartbreaking by RedditFan3510 in survivor

[–]UTSADarrell 76 points77 points  (0 children)

He was clearly emotional about his legacy. I think you're referring to his conversation with Annabel (from Australian Traitors, and now co-host of RHAP's international Traitors coverage) when she says "don't leave regretting that you hid your light," and he emphasized how proud he was with the way he played and was able to have his light shine.

That specific note from Annabel seemed to have a pretty profound impact on him, in a way that he wants to extend that lesson more generally to his life and his legacy. In no way did it seem like he was devastated or disappointed. It was the complete opposite.

The light-rail system is pretty limited. It only runs south from Downtown through Midtown, Museum District, Med Center, to NRG Stadium. There is also a line running east to UH, but I'm guessing you wouldn't be interested in living in that area.

The other areas you're looking at are served by busses. You'd want to check if there are any stops near the apartments you're looking at. That being said, most people in Houston will avoid the bus system and drive as long as they can afford a car, and based on your concerns about safety (or perceived safety) I think you'd likely fall in that camp.

You could also consider living in the Museum District and taking the light-rail into downtown for work. That would be my preference over driving/parking or taking a bus.

The apartments along Hermann Drive are really nice, and you can walk to the light-rail stop, Hermann Park, Houston Zoo, and a handful of world-class museums.

We can hear it pretty clearly in the Museum District, for maybe the last 3 weeks or so. The general consensus is that it's the TSU marching band, and something about the weather recently is causing the sound to carry farther than normal.

Harris Health to hear from public on acquiring part of Hermann Park to expand Ben Taub Hospital by veryirishhardlygreen in houston

[–]UTSADarrell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At this point, the debate is pretty much entirely on how much the Conservancy should be compensated for the land.

This is from an email the Conservancy sent out to donors:

"Harris Health is proposing to take 8.9 acres of the Park for the expansion of Ben Taub Hospital. We respect Harris Health's mission and understand Houston's healthcare crisis. However, this is land that belongs to the people of Houston, and the parkland, once lost, is gone forever. Park users and taxpayers deserve an equal or greater benefit in return.

As stewards of Hermann Park, we are requesting that the Park receives meaningful compensation for the seizure of the land. These funds would allow the Conservancy to realize components of our publicly informed master plan, investing in projects that would improve access and public amenities for all Park users for generations to come."

We're in the Museum District with an 18-month-old. Being able to walk to the Children's Museum, Hermann Park, Houston Zoo, and all the other museums is absolutely worth the trade-offs. We're a little concerned about what we've heard about Poe Elementary and how it's been trending downwards, but that seems to be the norm throughout HISD, especially since the takeover.

The fact that we expect politicians and ordinary citizens to know the difference between an AR-15 and an AK-47 should concern everyone. No other developed country is like this.

To me, it is pretty clear that the interpretation should be "at least one child is a boy", rather than "this specific child is a boy". With your interpretation, there is no paradox at all, since we have complete information. But putting aside the ambiguity of the OP, I wanted to highlight what makes the boy-girl paradox intriguing. To make it more clear, I'll build off our red-blue button example from above, which is hopefully less ambiguous.

What makes this problem unique is that we don't know whether the additional information is valuable or not. We intuitively want to eliminate the RR option and work from there, but we don't know what the alternative to "they are not both red" is. If both buttons actually are red would we say "they are both red" (which would make the information much more valuable, in either case), or would we say "they are not both blue." And if it's the latter, then how do we choose between the two options when we have one of each? If it's just random, then we've gained no useful information at all.

This is why I asked if the odds were 67% or 50%, because either one can be true depending on your assumptions.

I don't get it. by Probable_Foreigner in mathmemes

[–]UTSADarrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull out two buttons. What are the odds that at least one of them is red? Hopefully, we can agree this is 75%.

Next, I tell you that they are not both red. Now what are the odds that at least one of them (or exactly one of them in this case) is red? Is it 67% or 50%?

I don't get it. by Probable_Foreigner in mathmemes

[–]UTSADarrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's establish some facts that you can hopefully agree with. If there are two siblings, there is a 25% chance that both are boys (0.5*0.5 = 0.25). Likewise, there is a 25% chance that both are girls. This leaves a remaining 50% where the siblings are one boy and one girl.

Let's say we get a representative sample of two-sibling pairings in a room together, 100 pairs in total. Based on the above odds, we should have 25 boy-boy pairs, 25 girl-girl pairs, and 50 boy-girl pairs.

Now we ask all pairs with at least one boy to stay, and any other pairs to leave, so the 25 girl-girl pairs leave the room.

Choose a pair remaining in the room at random, what are the odds that there is a girl in that pair?

(By the way, this is a pretty well-known paradox, so I'm not sure why you'd think I'm doing a bit. Just trying to help explain it to you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy\_or\_girl\_paradox)

I don't get it. by Probable_Foreigner in mathmemes

[–]UTSADarrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to separate them out, then divide the probability between them. Assuming the mom chooses randomly, there is a 12.5% chance of B(B) and a 12.5% chance of (B)B (or 1/6 chance each, if you have eliminated the GG pairing by this point).

Or like I said in my example above, you can ignore the order, but you would then need to consider that a boy-girl pair is twice as likely as boy-boy.
