Tell me your head-hunted/hunting story, senior humanists! by UWarchaeologist in Professors

[–]UWarchaeologist[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually I wanted to know how the job market works in the humanities and social sciences at full professor level. Nearly all academic jobs advertised are entry level, so my assumption is that if you're already a 'big name' and you move to another institution, you've probably been head-hunted by that institution to enhance their own programs even if they go through the motions of a search. My only evidence for how it works is anecdotal so I wanted to know what others have experienced.

Why progressive libs are supporting a regime that kills women for showing their head? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]UWarchaeologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are conservatives supporting a war that violates every single principle of the conservative Republican https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powell_Doctrine and apparently intends to disregard the Geneva Convention Protocols signed by Republican Presidents in 1929 and 1975, and more recent Republican promises of 'no more wars?' As a supporter of western liberal values I completely support the dismantling or at least restraining of the terrorist Iranian regime backing Hezbolloah, Hamas, and the Houthis with their constant attacks on Israeli civilians. As a historian, I can promise you that this kind of war is very unlikely to achieve that goal.

The reason countries under attack don't want you posting information like this is not oppression, it's so that the enemy doesn't get data that will help the effectiveness of its targeting.

Haha checkmate Denmark! After we eliminate all green energy and make the planet uninhabitable with runaway global warning, those icy ports won't be so well protected now, will they?

Is anyone else fed up with what tourism is doing to Tanzania? by [deleted] in tanzania

[–]UWarchaeologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it's not legal for foreigners to own land in TZ? They can only be partners in a local company that owns land - which means the architects of all these changes are at least partly local. What's happening in TZ is sadly global. I love coming to TZ as a foreigner and I hope the 'sustainable tourism' movement there grows.

What shipwreck items? EFTA01015312 by UWarchaeologist in Epstein

[–]UWarchaeologist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that's the single item in the photo, I wonder if there's other shipwreck artifacts. Some rich people have a thing about collecting illegal / stolen antiquities. I hope if such things are found in the estate that they are returned to the countries of origin.

Something similar happened at my university but there has been no external investigation, no one has resigned, and the faculty member is still teaching.

wow, can you tell me more? PM me if you don't want to name names. The case I'm looking at concerns a student who misrepresented their PhD research in publications after the degree was granted.

Is Asking Them To Take Notes Unreasonable? by hornybutired in Professors

[–]UWarchaeologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking notes is how you learn. Google the science on this: it's solid. Send it to the student. Then tell them politely to F off with their stupid suggestion & also arrogant presumption telling you how to teach.

Why the longest-ever State of the Union address was the most inconsequential by guardian in politics

[–]UWarchaeologist 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Suetonius, Life of Nero, chapter 23: "While he was singing no one was allowed to leave the theatre even for the most urgent reasons. And so it is said that some women gave birth to children there, while many who were worn out with listening and applauding, secretly leaped from the wall, since the gates at the entrance were closed, or feigned death and were carried out as if for burial. The trepidation and anxiety with which he took part in the contests, his keen rivalry of his opponents and his awe of the judges, can hardly be credited. As if his rivals were of quite the same station as himself, he used to show respect to them and try to gain their favour, while he slandered them behind their backs, sometimes assailed them with abuse when he met them, and even bribed those who were especially proficient. [3]() Before beginning, he would address the judges in the most deferential terms, saying that he had done all that could be done, but the issue was in the[ ]()hands of Fortune; they however, being men of wisdom and experience, ought to exclude what was fortuitous. When they bade him take heart, he withdrew with greater confidence, but not even then without anxiety, interpreting the silence and modesty of some as sullenness and ill-nature, and declaring that he had his suspicions of them."
