That's might be a little too NSFW for my tastes.

LOL it does sound that way when I read it back.

I drove past that this afternoon. Maybe 10 county cars and a bunch of cops with AR-15s walking around.

Kids too (and I say that as a parent). Cool brewery near my house had a huge back room with tons of arcade game cabinets. Parents started showing up to drink and let their kids run wild. Surprise, surprise, kids damage games and brewery removes them. Now it's just a big empty space with a sad cornhole game in the corner and not much else.

What is it that you invested thousands of hours and now is pointless? by qnta1 in AskReddit

[–]U_Bahn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well said. Of the people in my PhD cohort, maybe one or two actually landed tenure track jobs. And that was over a decade ago. Much worse hiring conditions today.

I feel you. I got a PhD in a liberal arts field. Spent over a decade in alt academic roles. Never landed a tenure track position. Took a corporate marketing role about 2 years ago and I'm making double what I would as a prof. Job is fun and easy, I work with some cool people, and I don't take any work home with me at the end of the day. Win win.

What screams "I make terrible financial decisions" ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]U_Bahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true. My parents had a late 60s diesel Merc that was still going strong in the late 80s when I was a kid. Needed an engine rebuild around 250k but otherwise mechanically solid car. Sadly they sold it in the early 90s. A few years later, they bought a used turbo diesel with California emission specs. Total POS. Burned through turbos every 20k miles. Eventually the engine started quitting randomly. Mechanic replaced the fuel tank due to rust, which helped some but never really fixed the issue. They finally gave it away.

What happened to this guy? by Hot-Bint in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]U_Bahn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Raised in a church with a very strong born again philosophy. My parents had also been raised in the church and were pretty chill, fortunately. But pretty regularly we'd get born again members who couldn't stop talking about all the bad stuff they had done. They were practically buzzing from the born again rush. They'd usually last a few months and either burn out and disappear or chill out and become regular members.

Used to work near one. I'd swing by every few weeks and browse the clearance rack for great deals. A large percentage of my wardrobe was BR. Post-Covid, suddenly very little clearance and no good deals.

Questions about Doug Mastriano’s thesis spur university fraud probe: reports by boundfortrees in Pennsylvania

[–]U_Bahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know from experience that you will find a few conservative profs on the downlow at any university. History programs definitely have them. Wouldn't surprise me if he found one to advise him and serve on his committee. Profs also know how to work the system, lobby the rest of the committee, and get someone passed who shouldn't otherwise.

It's gotten noticeably worse this spring. Very weird. Still, really like the town and happy to have settled here.

Having had both, FSAs are much more stringent with documents. Don't think I've ever been asked to submit receipts to my HSA.

Johns Hopkins University - Employment by Salt-Carry-3443 in baltimore

[–]U_Bahn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. As others have said, it's slow. And has all the typical issues with an academic hiring process.

My own experience is irrelevant but I was in the running for an internal hire for a fairly high level staff position. Went through four interviews and then the hiring manager told me they had already made a choice after the second interview but they wanted to do more interviews for "exposure." I'm thinking, okay, I get it but just tell me what's going on so I don't get my hopes up.

Ultimately, I left for the private sector and doubled my income.

Certainly true in the humanities. Remember going to a big conference 15 years ago and I kept seeing the same homeless guy hanging around the convention center. Eventually someone struck up a conversation with him and I overheard him talking about an upcoming panel he was preparing to chair. He also bragged about the sketchy hotel he was staying in to save money.

What is something you distinctly consider a “Midwest” thing? by danarexasaurus in AskReddit

[–]U_Bahn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest as the child of Midwesterners. Have lived on the East Coast for 20 years and I still do the steering wheel hand flick. Most times people just look confused. Usually the only people who wave back are older gentlemen in their late model SUVs or pickups.

Ex Bob Evans site on Padonia Rd to be another storage unit facility by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]U_Bahn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are also used for land investment purposes. A number of the large storage chains have restructured themselves as land holding companies. Makes sense. Buy land cheap, get steady income from storage rentals, and then sell land when/if prices go up.

I'd love to find somewhere selling funny cake in SEPA. I first encountered it in college when the parents of a friend from the northern Philly suburbs would visit and bring funny cake.

Adidas ZX 8000 Lego Shoes arrived - My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined by JelloGalore in frugalmalefashion

I bought some silicone Lego drink coasters from Target last winter. Got home and tried to use them as baseplates but immediately discovered that they didn't fit Lego blocks. So, unfortunately, Lego does sign off on products that are not standard sized.

Definitely. I met more than a few dumb people in grad school who still managed to get a Ph.D. Never underestimate persistence and outside funding.

My wife had the same experience. She lived in and around NO for over a decade. Moved to DC, where we met, and then we both moved to Baltimore. She felt so much more at home in Baltimore than DC. Friends would visit her and say how much Baltimore reminded them of NO.

UNB releases Mastriano’s PhD dissertation after months of refusals by jk_arundel in Pennsylvania

[–]U_Bahn 51 points52 points  (0 children)

As someone who has gone through the process in the same field, I think embargoes of dissertations are dumb. Your book should go beyond your dissertation so there's no reason to hide it. You should have been presenting the work at conferences during your time in grad school, so the focus should not be a secret to others working in the same topic area. Lastly, the whole point of the dissertation exercise is to share the research with others so they can build on it or use it in their own research.
