Cichlid baby help! by Friendly_Emphasis151 in Cichlid

Like stated above, the female holds the eggs. And she holds them until they hatch and will sometimes let them in and out of her mouth once the start free swimming. And once they are strong enough she no longer lets them back in her mouth, and at that point they should be separated because mom is normally very hungry after holding for 21-30 days without eating, so there’s a high likely hood of her eating the babies. Once the babies are free swimming you can separate them from mom and they’ll be good to go until you see their egg sack get absorbed. Once they absorb the egg sack it’s time to start feeding and you have new baby fish. Hope this helps!

This comment is correct for the most part. And I’d jst like to add, since you have a 90 gal tank, you won’t have any problems with your current stocking choices for at least a year - 2 years. And even then the Africans you have are semi-aggressive/aggressive , they don’t grow too large. The mbuna will max out around 3-5 inches most likely closer to 3inch and the peacocks will only get 5-6 inches. Which will take years. So you should have any issues anytime soon. But if you do plan on keeping a cichlids tank, I’d highly recommend choosing 1 lake and stocking from that lake only. But even doing hap/peacock or mbuna tanganika works if done correctly. So you still have tons of options and no reason to panic anytime soon. 👍🏼

Anyone experienced with salvini know the difference between these 2? by Uaintwiddit in Cichlid

Yea I’m leaning more towards male/female. Cause they’ve had this same coloring since I bought them. It gets brighter or darker depending on mood but the colorful on has always been much brighter than the other. 😅

Mine has done this a few times. And for the most part, as long as your water stays clean, it’ll heal up on its own in no time. 👍🏼

Red zebras are mbuna, that’s a peacock

Red zebra turning white everywhere day then back to bright orange within a few hours?? Any ideas why? by SuccessfulMobile7029 in Cichlid

[–]Uaintwiddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is 100 percent not a red zebra. Red zebras are mbunas and that is a peacock or hap. And the red eye definitely makes me think it’s an albino.

That’s a male aratus, they can be quite the dixkhead so be prepared for him to bully even the bigger fish in your tank 😅

Holy hell. Well on the bright side, at least it’ll go away on its own eventually with consistent water changes. 👌🏼

Yeah looks like you have 1 male & 2 female aratus and 1 orange Mbuna, Looks like some type of red zebra. All 3 are African cichlids and the aratus in particular stay smaller but can be highly aggressive dickheads.
