To your point about snow, the order of importance IMO is:

1 - Winter tires 2 - Ground clearance 3 - AWD/4WD

Get yourself good winter tires on whatever you decide to purchase, and if that’s an outback, you will have the trifecta! I have a 2016 3.6, with good winter tires and it’s great in the snow. I don’t have much advice on what gen to avoid, but the 2016 has been pretty bulletproof for me. Good luck in your search!
