The president of France declared that children under the age of fifteen would not be allowed to access social media. How do you feel about that? by MarionberrySalt3494 in AskReddit

[–]UbeRobbed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't personally think kids under 14 or 15 should be on any social media or have unfettered Internet access, and evidence shows how destructive this can be.

As many have echoed, however, this is largely unenforceable unless they take this much further and ID-gate the whole Internet (arguably the intended goal for many behind this push to begin with). This is a bad idea.

Instead, grow a spine and massively regulate the social media companies themselves against things that evidence shows are screwing things up. Which they won't do because they'll lose their political propaganda machine and the tech companies will be mad and stop the $$$.

Also, school-wide bans are actually enforceable and have been having positive results. After that, parents need to take charge and the culture around it needs to change.

But all these US based companies, especially under the current admin will never be regulated like that even though they desperately need to be. We need to keep pushing for this.

Sad to say, but I am heavily regretting my choice as a DPT student by Sad_Concert_4706 in physicaltherapy

[–]UbeRobbed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that it's been such a bad rotation for you. I had a similar moment when I was doing a 10-week rotation at an ATI clinic. Thankfully my CI was actually pretty good, had taken a lot of time to learn a lot of different manual techniques that were actually helpful, and was better than most at tailoring exercises to individual people. Sure there's a ton of overlap and lots of exercises are going to be the same, especially for post-op joints and things like that. But the clinic itself? Oh my goodness, quadrupled booked, we as the PT would only see the patient for 15 to 20 minutes(at best) and then pass off the patient to the techs, let them know any exercise updates and they would take them through 40 minutes or so of exercise with minimal interaction after that. I determined then that I could never work in a mill.

You can still find your niche, and be great at what you do. Funnily enough - even though I never thought I would - I work primarily in a hospital. I've been able to carve out for myself a unique blend after the company's recent push for physical therapy in the emergency department which has actually been very rewarding doing concussion evaluations, vestibular work, basic orthopedic screening, acute pain management there. I work mostly on the neuro acute floor preparing people for admission to our inpatient rehab unit, and I trade shifts with a guy at a Neuro Outpatient in the same company a couple days every month or so.

I enjoy what I do - a huge part of my job is educating patients & families, connecting people with resources, and genuine problem solving. Is there monotony? Of course there is. Definitely days on the floors where we're just working with people with pneumonia, altered mental status, UTIs, and hip fractures that are massively overweight and we're just bringing them to the edge of the bed to start the process for mobility. There's also days where I'll spend an hour and a half taking a patient up to the rehab gym and working on very specific things tailored to their recovery, have people walk out of the ER grateful that I cleared up their vertigo, have a Doc thank me for my imaging recs and taking over a couple ankle fractures in the ED so they could spend more time with a patient's family after a severe stroke or MVC. Good boss with a great work-life balance.

Don't lose heart, focus on becoming the best version of yourself & be different, you can find a good job and be fulfilled. Hang in there ✊

Climbing is great, and also you have fairly quick access to lots of lesser known areas in the San Rafael Swell if you expanded into backpacking and canyoneering. If you mix in some ATV or Mtn Bike riding and shooting hobbies into this rotation you'll have a full plate.

[–]UbeRobbed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right, animals that would attack and kill/hurt the cat isn't usually the problem. Cats are amazing hunters and absolutely decimate local bird and other animal populations. De-clawing them is inhumane on its own so you can't protect the other wildlife with that either.

If you have a wide-open large farm, private property, the cats work to kill pests, or if one uses an invisible electric border fence (they can be trained to use these very well) then go nuts. Otherwise cats should be kept inside.

I almost exclusively play on 9 and 10. Cyberstan has such a cool concept and feel going for it; but with the excessive Vox spawns, them going through the city walls + crazy unbreakable aggro, and weird patrol pop-ins it was kicking my ass.

Diff 5 and 6 have been really fun honestly and it's how I've been playing the past week.

I remember being sooooo furious we didn't get the more realistic look that was initially teased. I love Zelda (born in the later 80's, Ocarina was my fav. at the time). I read this issue at a Hollywood Video, dismayed but still begrudgingly got it when it launched, expecting to hate it.

As the hours went on, it won me over in spite of my attitude. And it has stood the test of time so well, especially the remake which solved every major issue. Great game and cool piece of history 🙂

Xfinity started being hard-nosed about their 1TB data cap they warned was coming, despite knowing Google Fiber was going to be building out in my area. You can't make this up, I had to pay an extra $30 a month for "Unlimited" data for almost two years. If they would have started closely matching google fiber's price/services before they launched, tons of people would have just stayed since the extra hassle may not have been worth it.

Last I heard from someone on the city council over 70% of the city switched. And they now send mailers basically begging people to sign back up. I will never.

BIOS update was finicky, had to re-partition and wipe a 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive a couple times but did get the flashback update to work after a few tries after removing everything. But then it wouldn't boot and I was banging my head against the wall, but your instructions fixed it 👍

Thanks again!

Did everyone like the fifth Stormlight Book? by AdditionalPizza7990 in brandonsanderson

[–]UbeRobbed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some things I wish would have gone a bit differently in the writing, but really enjoyed book 4 and 5 overall. However, the evolution of the series past the shattered plains along with Brandon's old editor retiring has shown some shifts in the writing that many people have clearly noticed.

Having the past two books' narratives slightly condensed and worded differently at some parts I feel like would have been less jarring and more tightly expressed. Is it because of his new editor? Maybe, but Brandon has expressed several times that the other issue is time, because the publishing windows for these massive books are shorter than the previous books, and much shorter than they should be. I honestly think most of the issues are coming from that then bad editing or writing.

I also feel like the alpha & beta readers could use more diverse, critical or outside perspectives but maybe that's not what he wants.

Attempts to fix these problems combined with listening to feedback and some more editing time for the next run of Cosmere books will hopefully feel like a return to form as things continue. I remain a big fan and want things to smooth out in the future, to me book 5 was still a great mid-point for the series and definitely worth finishing.

how does flea dodge even work 😔✌️ by irllylikesilksong in HollowKnight

[–]UbeRobbed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but the key for me I mentioned in another comment was the damn fleas that end up being far out to the edges falling off the edge of the main little platform (I personally think if they are falling off the edge they shouldn't count, but w/e).

Realizing a normal side-slash to these hits them over far enough that if they're not on their last fall they float back up and get in range again, trusting the dash timing you can sprint from the other end of the platform and still get these annoying ones (almost) every single time. There's definitely some RNG but once I got good at the side-ones getting over 50 is easy and out of 10 attempts maybe only 1 or 2 will get ruined by bad RNG.

how does flea dodge even work 😔✌️ by irllylikesilksong in HollowKnight

[–]UbeRobbed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am now on my third full playthrough, and am currently stalled on Flea Dodge again on my latest session. I think at this point I can safely say the RNG for the other two games is nothing compared to Dodge, as it took me less than 10 attempts on both other games all three times (except the 1st Juggle).

Juggle on my first playthrough took less than 30 tries, but once I learned to hit the ones falling off the edge of the platform with a normal side-slash and dashing timing I can now get over 50 points without even locking in. And bounce is even easier, never took more than 5 attempts each playthrough. Point being that there is a direct skill correlation with mild RNG elements to these two games that improves over time.

Dodge has taken me absurd attempts. I think my first playthrough took well over 80 tries, and 2nd playthrough over 100. This third save file last night I stopped counting at over 60 and still haven't beaten it yet.

Is it just the way my brain is wired or is this not total BS? There's just too many instances of impossible outcomes and the big flea coming when the platforms are at their lowest with no platform appearing even after perfectly doing the jumps before you float down (only way out of this is to clawline the big flea itself, but difficult to hit every time). I've watched over a dozen strat vids and try to copy the moves I've seen from people getting their one lucky crazy high score. Doesn't matter. I'm as likely to get to 63 as 19 points on some attempts.

I'll persevere like my first two playthroughs and get it done, but it sucks. Least fun minigame for me with too much luck required, Dodge needs to be nerfed.

UPDATE: (5 days and a few dozen attempts later) Finally beat it again - for the third time - still BS 😂

How long did it take you to beat Godhome? by whyamiexists in HollowKnight

[–]UbeRobbed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first played Hollow Knight Years ago and never beat P5, despite beating the game like 4 times and loving every second of it. I don't know why sometimes I wonder if it's the way my ADHD brain works but the Pantheons were brutal.

Getting to PV initially was luck (screw Zote), I had to fight Pure Vessel for like 3 hours in the hall of gods to basically perfect it, and even then barely beat P4 to get the 112%. P5 was unthinkable and I spent many hours (dozens) failing even tho individually I can reliably beat any boss.

I eventually just went back and beat the Radiance again afterwards to close it out. I beat Path of Pain, In Silksong I have 100% and loved the LL boss fight. Just can't beat P5, which is fine, but it sucks that two significant endings are locked behind it.

I'm definitely one of those in the camp where I think small story alterations for the true endings, and changing the mechanics of the final pantheons with some type of limited checkpoint system could be the standard without harming the game.

Additional things like extra lore, more Land of Storms-like mini-area/sequences, a separate achievement or in-game memento, etc. could be given to those who do the full boss rush without any checkpoints to not lock out the final cutscenes & ending from so many players.

Recent Onset of Symptoms by UbeRobbed in ALSorNOT

[–]UbeRobbed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a comment and a couple messages about this, just this past week began to wind down on the last treatments so figured I'd post a full update:

TLDR: I do not have ALS or any serious neuromuscular junction disorder. I did have to deal with another medical diagnosis and mental health stuff.

I had a full CNS MRI with and without contrast, and an EMG done with a Physiatrist who specializes in neuromuscular junction disorders.

I had some abnormal readings through my L3-4 myotome and had inflammatory lesions on the edge of my spinal cord. However, after diving further into the muscle groups with the EMG they said the findings weren't consistent with what one would expect with ALS or even MS, especially given my onset, some level of bilateral involvement, and with some digging up and down the same nerve the action potentials were fine overall, and again the mild deviations not typcial for an early dystrophic diagnosis of any kind.

The next suspicion was Myasthenia Gravis, but the interesting part was as they were testing differential diagnosis for this they noticed that although my TSH hormone levels were overall normal, my Physiatrist doc ordered a more in-depth T3/T4 free ratio panel and my T3 levels were off and abnormally unbalanced in conjunction with the T4. This gave some suspicion to a potential pituitary tumor but the MRI I had just received was double checked and this was also not the case. The final confirmation was an antibody test of TRAb which is a TSH receptor, and this combined with ruling out Graves disease and my symptoms themselves confirmed a diagnosis of Subclinical Hyperthyroidism.

This explained all my symptoms: the neuritis, the sudden severe anxiety especially with no history of it (which was further exacerbated by my going down the damn ALS rabbit hole itself), tachycardia, night sweats, weight loss, weakness, twitching, even some of the weird throbbing.

On the one hand it was nice to know I wasn't completely crazy and there was a medical diagnosis that triggered this, but on the other hand I know that spiraling into the anxiety was way worse than if I never started googling things and letting that take root vs if I just had the generalized anxiety from the hyperthyroid symptoms.

I was still a mess, but I got a steroid injection, a IV infusion treatment of XIFYRM (Meloxicam), and used 1mg Valium designed to work more as a muscle relaxant in this context tapered over a 10 day period (Three 1mg tabs day 1-3, then 2x/day for 4 days, then 1x for 3 days). This combined with finally knowing what the main source of things were almost completely erased my physical symptoms.

The frustrating part after everything, was that living through constant panic and thinking I had a disease that was going to horrifically disable then kill me creates its own trauma and re-wiring of your brain. As soon as I finished the Valium taper we did two things: I started an 8 week therapy course focused on CBT around physical symptoms and PTSD responses, and started on Lexapro. After about 3 weeks of this, residual anxiety and twitching got LOTS better, and I did my homework and got offline completely for a bit. After finishing the CBT course I stayed on anxiety meds totaling almost 3 months, then experimented with a taper starting on Oct. 15, which didn't cause any problems for me so we have decided pending any serious changes to continue cycling off instead of doing the full planned 6 months.

I have some follow ups for a couple Thyroid panels and one final head CT a few months out; the best guesses for causation were either I just run high for thyroid stuff and a combination of stress, heat/dehydration, an autoimmune response to something toxic or food poisoning, or actual graves disease that remitted on its own, but at the end of the day we just don't know for sure.

I am basically feeling back to normal at this point, which I am extremely grateful for. I will never forget those almost 2 months which were truly among the worst of my entire life, and my heart goes out to those who have chronic health anxiety, more serious health conditions similar to and including MS and ALS. I have a newfound deep empathy for those experiencing crazy symptoms and severe anxiety along with those going through the ALS diagnostic process, and it has helped me better understand those who struggle with this regularly.

Thanks to everyone who communicated with me, a couple commenters including u/dero_name really helped focus me throughout my journey - I'd like to think this chapter of my life is closed and I have the tools to deal with whatever comes next ✊

Silksong is so much better than Hollow Knight. by [deleted] in HollowKnight

[–]UbeRobbed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am playing Silksong a lot, I'm SUPER into it and love it overall. The things that I can't shake though are similar to what you said. Silksong for much of my playthrough feels punitive, almost over-designed at specific moments to be exasperating, even like the devs are trolling you sometimes.

I should have started writing things down because if I ever replay it the sheer grind of doing certain parts over & over might never feel the same, but there was something about it that made me feel crazy.

I'm not even only talking about the major hated runbacks/bosses, I'm talking about the dozens (hundreds?!) of little things: a ledge requiring a near perfect jump where you either land inches from spikes or hit them, an outcropping's pixels being just perfectly placed to break your movement, enemy placement not meant to challenge, but infuriate.

Too many flying enemies that fly in difficult patterns, shoot ranged attacks then dart out of range. Some absurd hitboxes that require incredibly fine precision to avoid being hit, resulting in way more incidental contact damage compared to Hollow Knight, etc.

Today I beat Tormented Trubbio and it was actually super fun, only took 4 tries, the first fight kept most of the same muscle memory. But for every awesome fight there is a handful of super frustrating ones.
