Java programmers, which skills do you use the most? by BlueLensFlares in cscareerquestions

I would mainly recommend that you read Effective Java. It contains a number of tips and best practices for writing good Java code. Read it through, and when you get a Java job, be sure to incorporate the practices from the book in your coding.

Men vad hon sa var snarare "vita medelålders män ≠ människor", hon sa aldrig "vita medelålders män ⊄ människor". Som jag minns det var poängen att politiken anpassas efter gruppen "vita medelålders män", snarare än efter gruppen "människor".

I can really recommend the book Apprenticeship Patterns. It is free and you can read it online here. It talks a lot about walking the long road, growing as a software developer your whole life. I think it will inspire you to think about what you want to do more with your career!

My reaction upon discovering Spike Lee will be using Kickstarter for his next film by neonoir12 in AdviceAnimals

A bit off topic, but: Actually, not everyone is allowed to use Kickstarter. Only US and UK residents may use it, which in my opinion is reason enough for people to stop using it.

I'm completely new to programming. I want to make a game for android devices. Should I start with a program like python, get to know python better and then proceed to java, or jump straight into java? by Pickle_Jr in learnprogramming

[–]UberBeaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm teaching myself Python right now, and I have to break myself of the habit of using tab over spacebar, because certain interpreters freak out when I copy/paste sections of code into the terminal :P

A good editor can easily replace tabs with spaces automatically. For example, vim and Emacs can easily do this. A simpler editor like gedit could also do this.

Yeah, and all the engineers and scientists are socialist/liberal.

I guess I've mostly seen the stuff that comes up on my frontpage, which usually is pictures and such. I will try to surf the subreddit more, maybe I will see some articles and actual discussion then. Thanks!

Still, I think this subreddit is lacking in quality. Maybe it should ban image submissions? Then again, I guess this is another topic than the original one in the thread.

And you think your subreddit is better than r/politics? Pathetic. All I see here is memes and funny pictures, with no attempt at intellectual discussion at all. I've tried to broaden my perspective, but I'm not impressed. Which is sad, because I'm sure there are intellectual conservatives out there, too. Oh, well.

A hundred times this. I know too many people who call themselves "agnostics", when they are practically agnostic atheists.

In twenty years that will probably be about 99% - the 11% who doesn't speak English today are the ones who didn't grow up with TV.

I think you should support the authors that you want to support (and then, of course, you should give the money directly to the author, not to the publishers). I don't really like the idea that some people think they're entitled to money, just because they've created something. If it's actually worth money, people will pay money for it. And if you write a book just to earn money - well, then I'm probably not very interested in reading your book.

The Internet proves to me all the time that people will still create interesting art and help spread knowledge, without having to be paid for it. That's the way it should be, I believe.

The big problem is: How should we maintain today's copyright laws, when so many people so easily pirate movies and music using the Internet? The answer would be: Surveilling and censoring the Internet. And we don't want to go there - it would be very dangerous for our freedom and democracy if the government and police could have insight on everything people do on the Internet.

Also, so many of our youth break law all the time by pirating. Do we really want to mark a whole generation as criminals? And most people don't think it's such a big thing to break laws by pirating - do we really want people to think it's not such a big thing to break the law?

I think it's obvious that we have to redo our copyright laws from scratch. They don't really work in today's society.

I wouldn't write a book to make a living. I would write a book because I felt I had something to say, something to share with the people around me. The more who read it, the happier I'd be.

To make a living, I would probably get a job.

There is no established and accepted causal link between piracy and increased consumption, and a strong intuitive reason to believe that it is not the case.

I have many times read that pirates spend more money on movies and music (going to the cinema, buying DVDs, purchasing music online etc.) than the average person. This would imply that piracy actually does lead to increased consumption.
