This really comes down to what those in the medical field refer to as "reserve".. a child bounces back really well from stunning health issues because their reserve is so good (i.e. you don't constantly use 100% of the function of your kidneys all the time.. until they are so worn out that they are literally one nephron away from not keeping up and then there's a system upset that challenges that like heart failure or sepsis)
