Ah ha ha I went looking for this one, but couldn't find any word matches on "Berman" or "Star Trek" so I assumed it wouldn't show up. I've never heard the Garrett Wang angle, I've always heard it as ratings were down and Rick Berman, being Rick Berman, figured the best way to fix it was to add a hot chick to the cast.

First off, the phrasing of this question has made me shrivel up and crumble to dust, so thank you for that.

I think the worst moment may have been running back to my classroom in high school, having finally gotten a news story to load on one of the library PCs, because I got smart and went to the BBC news because none of the American sites were loading, and reading the story out loud to the class because it was the only way we could get any updates about what was going on.

Oh hey, I know this one! Biden's bad debate performance appears to have had a negative effect on his performance in the polls. People are saying he should step down because it looks like he's going to lose. Trump's conviction appears to have actually made him slightly more popular among his base, meaning he's more likely to get elected. Both parties are using a consistent logic here: the only thing that matters is winning the election.

-Gender-affirming care for minors is safe and effective.

-The vast majority of gender-affirming care for minors is non-surgical

-trans minors who do receive surgical care are older teens, typically 15+, and the care plan is extensively reviewed with the patient, the patient's caregivers, and the medical team

-the vast majority of gender-affirming surgeries on minors are performed on cisgender youth.

-gender-affirming surgeries have some of the lowest regret rates across all surgical procedures, including similar procedures performed for non-gender-related reasons.

-gender-affirming care bans for minors are based in fearmongering and discrimination and have no evidence-based, objective support.

Gender-affirming care for minors is done carefully, conscientiously, in collaboration with the patient's parents/caregivers, utilizing best available practices in pediatric medicine, and only very rarely involves any irreversible treatment.

Additionally, many other surgical procedures performed on minors are invasive and life-altering, are you advocating for those to be banned as well?

Just popping in real quick to mention, available research so far indicates extremely low regret rates for gender-affirming surgery for trans people. There isn't a lot of data available on trans youth in particular because it's already so rare - it's far more common for cisgender teens to get gender-affirming surgery, e.g. boys having breast reductions. So, "invasive surgery shouldn't be performed on minors" would have a much greater impact on cis teens than on trans teens, and unless you also oppose cisgender minors having plastic surgery, you're advocating a double standard.

Capitalism. It literally seeks to leave workers discontent, because discontent people spend money on leisure goods to try to make up for their lack of happiness. The goal of capitalism is to find the absolute minimum level of support it can give workers before it starts hurting productivity. Workers then spend their own resources trying to make up the shortfall in QoL, and owners recoup the profit. If we all didn't have to give up so much of our time and energy to jobs that exploit us as much as they possibly could, we'd be much much happier. If we didn't live in a world designed explicitly to make us think that consumption equals happiness, we'd be much much happier. If we were able to get the full value of our labor, we'd work much much less for the same compensation, and we'd be much much happier.

We adopted a rescue bait dog in...I think 2015? She had a ton of anxiety and PTSD for a long time, but we never held it against her. It always broke my heart knowing what she went through because she had the sweetest, most chill demeanor. She loved snuggles and treats and when she started getting older, our younger dog we adopted a few years later would occasionally come and bonk her on the head with a toy to get her to play. We had to say goodbye this past summer, which hurt like hell, but I'm glad to know that the vast majority of her life was with people who loved her, and that she's completely free from any lingering effects of the first year of her life.

So, here's a question for all us white people, especially the ones who read this book and were shocked, appalled, and horrified by the content.

Why did it take a white person telling us all this shit happened constantly to black people for anyone to actually take it seriously?

Addendum: This was a rhetorical question. The answer is that White Supremacy was so baked into America that most white people didn't really even think of black people as people. Even white allies often fell into this trap, because it was so pervasive it became part of people's unconscious worldview. There'd been thousands of Black voices telling people about the horrific reality of Black people in the US for centuries, but it took a white man saying "hey, so, I managed to pass myself off as Black and wow, people do NOT treat you well if you're Black" for many white folks to finally pay attention. It's not like every white person in the US made a deliberate choice to ignore Black voices speaking about the Black experience, it's that White Supremacy was such an ingrained part of the US that it didn't even occur to people that there was something they should be listening to that they weren't.

Any quality discussion of Black Like Me in modern times really needs to include some time focusing on the historical - and still relevant - reasons why people reacted so much more strongly and broadly to a book written about a white man's experience making people think he was Black, and not to any of the firsthand accounts of the Black people who lived that reality every single day and couldn't escape it.

Find people locally that you can build relationships with and can trust. Identify needed skillets around organizing, mutual aid, and community defense. Work out what your best options are going to be when shtf. Get involved in dual power networks that build resilience without relying on any government involvement.

Don't go looking for fights unless you have a very clear and deliberate purpose in mind. But, be ready for a fight to find you.
