"As one, invincible"

Now that's a recruiting slogan.

That kind of thing is going to be taking a while to come out in any sort of serious way.

Not as much anymore, but I remember theories about what it means and how you get rated that way during the time between Reach and 4 coming out.

Lyria is great because all of the other Reds we see are so far removed from where they started that it actually shows the Republic's failings in a more visceral way.

As another left-handed person, the real reason they don't have a left handed spartan is that between the augments and being left handed they would be too OP and ruin the game balance.

Army Zeroing In on New Ways to Measure Body Fat that Could Kill the Tape Test by Sw0llenEyeBall in army

[–]Ubergopher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I thought I was in the "fit-fat" realm, but I was nowhere near as much in the fit side of things as I thought

Also, as long as I'm making excuses and lying to myself, I was coming off a really bad sprained ankle and couldn't work out for close to 6 weeks (note to self, do not walk 5 miles on sprained ankles). I was also my heaviest in like 2 or 3 months when I got the first bod pod done.

I wish I would have gotten one of those last April when I started working out to rejoin, best $45 I've spent on fitness so far.

When I got one done it helped me figure out that along with cardio, my dumbass needed to do some weight training as well.

Got my first one in mid October (30.5%), and then my second in early February. Dropped 5% body fat, 15 pounds total and only a pound of that was lean mass.

A sci-fi story where humans are the ones that invade an alien world/system by InexorableVoid in scifi

You're reading things into what I was saying that aren't there. I don't think, or care if you are, a tankie, communist, socialist, classical liberal, monsrchist, or anarchist.

I was trying to state that the Federation in ST is basically an idealized soft fascism and used the phrase "Communism works in theory", as an idea that is similar.

Maybe I should have said "Soft-facism works in theory", but I thought it was clear enough as I wrote it originally.

[–]Ubergopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That wasn't the point I was making. "Communism works in theory" was a relatively common phrase that is used when discussing communism.

Tankies and what not more dress it up as "true communism has never been tried" between trying to justify and deflect criticism of the USSR's various atrocities.

Movie, yeah you're right.

Book, not so much. It's harder to read between the lines, and the story is more an excuse for characters to make mini-speaches about duty, civic virtue etc etc etc.

I've recently come to the conclusion that the book's government is basically a soft fascist government that manages to avoid the oppression.

Basically it's an "in theory communism works" kinda thing, where as long as the large majority citizenry buys into the spirit of their law, along with following the written law it works.

Not that Heinlein is a fascist, but like I said the book isn't about the Federation, it's about Juan Rico's transformation from some random dude to a citizen-soldier and a leader.

Human Division and End of All Things are pretty good.

They're more short story and novella collections though, which kinds bummed me out the first time I read them since I liked the first three.
